Baby Essentials
The townspeople always recognized the alpha king wherever he went. That was already a fact. When our carriage stopped, and we stepped out, the people gave their courtesy bows. They were in awe whenever they looked at my bulging stomach and wished me well.
It looked like they had forgotten about the former queen and were focused on me.
Would I be happy or not?
"At least you replied to them," I muttered when the alpha king did not acknowledge them. He looked more like my bodyguard protecting me from possible harm than the alpha king himself. Maxxwell was glaring at them, scaring them away.
"I came here to guard you. Not to do some pleasantries. Let's get over this. Buy all you want, and we will return to the palace. You are not safe here." "Nothing is safe if there are always bad guys, Your Highness," I reminded.
The marketplace was not that busy, and the heat was not that painful-a perfect time to shop for the baby's essentials. I could not help but feel excited. Anyways, I better go to the children's section and buy some baby essentials.
I craned my neck.
If I remember correctly, there were some stores here where I could buy those. Just where?
"Are you searching for something?"
"Yes, definitely. Looking for some clothes for my baby," I answered.
Something crossed his eyes before he cleared his throat. "Baby essentials? It bothers me that you didn't tell me about it. I thought you were already done with it."
I sighed. "No, I have not. In preparation for the baby's coming. A crib would be excellent. However, I will ask one of your carpenters to make me one. I'm planning to put the baby in my room so that I can nurse
him better."
Worry crossed his handsome face.
"River. It's about time you transfer to my chamber."
I started walking and turned left, with the alpha king beside me. Where was the store again?
"Why would I even do that? You will only seduce me."
"Seduce you? Yeah. I might do that."
"You're not even embarrassed about that."
Where was it again?
"Why should I? I look forward to sleeping with you. Just like the old times."
"Hold your mouth, Maxxwell. I don't want to hear your perverted thoughts."
"Pervert thoughts? River, I am only talking about sleeping. Unless you missed that deed."
I put a complete stop and angrily looked at him. "Shame on you, Maxxwell. Grab some holy oil and wash your thoughts with it."
I smiled when I saw the store at some distance.
Sweat had started to form on my forehead, even though we were only walking for a short time. Damn. Walking was becoming more complex, and I was even tempted to ask Maxxwell to carry me.
I tilted my head to the side and saw him glaring at anyone who dared to look at me.
Grabbing some handkerchief and wiping the sweat from my forehead, I remembered, "Please stop looking at the people as if you will pounce at them if they did something wrong."
"I won't hesitate to kill anyone if they threaten and harm you," he promised.
"I can fight."
"That's not enough to make my mind at ease. There is always someone better than you. I don't want any harm to occur to my child."
"Chill, will you?"
We walked inside the store, and the owner (I was only guessing) gasped upon spotting the alpha king.
"I want to buy everything you are selling here," he demanded.
The owner nodded profusely. "It is my honor that you enter my humble shop, Your Majesty. Your Grace. Right away, Your Highness."
The owner was about to leave us when I stopped him. "Uhm, that is not necessary. I will only choose something which my son needs, okay? Are you even looking at some of the items here? Some of them are for
five years old, for crying out loud, Your Highness."
The alpha king cleared his throat. "Really? I don't know about that. Anyways, buy all the things you want. Let me pay for it."
"I have some money here."
"That is non-debatable, River." To the store owner, he said, "Give Her Grace whatever she wants. For our baby."
"Right away, Your Highness. I will do whatever I can to help Her Grace. Do you have any preference, Your Grace? Of the colors and designs?"
"None specifically. All I wanted was something for my son to wear."
"You came to the right place. There is some place for the infants' section."
I tilted my head and looked at Maxxwell. "I'll be leaving you here."
"I will go with you."
"You don't have to."
"I insist," he whispered with no room for arguments.
"Fine. Do what you want. But I will choose everything."
"Is that all you want?" Maxxwell asked, referring to a basket of clothes I chose. He was the one holding the basket, even if I insisted that I could do it. "Money is not a problem."
"I know. I know. You can even buy this store. But no thanks. I only need the essentials. The baby grows fast before I know it. U would rather spend more money on the experiences that we will be going to have."
"I will be joining the two of you. Can you also include me in your plans for our child?"
I tilted my head to the side. The alpha king's eyes were begging me to.
"I will think about it."
"So...you're planning on leaving me." His voice dropped to a particular octave. "I thought...little by little, you started to forgive me for the sake of our child."
I stopped at the corner, away from the store manager who had been accommodating new customers. He had plans of tailing us, but I asked him to leave us alone for better concentration.
"Did I tell you that? Did I say something about forgiving you?"
He was quiet for a moment. "You did not. But I am still hoping for it."
"Good. At least you know I will never forgive you."
I was leaving him there when he stopped me on my wrist. "Why?"
"You never do what you say. I thought you would be staying far away from me?"
His eyes looked conflicted. "I can't leave you alone. Especially if you are pregnant."
One customer spotted us, bowed, and scarred away.
I gritted my teeth. "This is not the right time to discuss our issues, Maxxwell. Your people will know we are not on good terms."
"Why don't you give me a chance?" he pressed
"I don't-"
"Give me one year to prove I am worthy of being the child's father. And if not, you can go wherever you go, and I will permanently sever our bond."
I sucked in a breath. "You don't know what you are talking about."
"I know."
"I don't believe you. You will utter words which you will not do in the "
"I vow to release you if you still see that I am not worthy of being forgiven and worthy of being of the father's child," he vowed, cutting off my words.
