                    Downhill
I was stunned for a moment.
The alpha king vowed without even batting an eye or thinking twice.
"A-are you sure about that?"
He gave me a small smile. "One hundred percent certain, my Queen. If you leave me because of those words, I will no longer look for you. Not even our child. I will patiently wait when you are back."
My heart hammered against my chest.
What made him change his mind?
"Are you giving up? That's what I believe. You are not the type to persist." I showed how disappointed I was in my voice.
"I am not. Because I will ensure that during those months, I will prove I am worthy of being by your side."
Damn.
Butterflies fluttered in my stomach. I hated how he could make my heart jump, and I longed for him simultaneously.
"W-whatever. I will be leaving after a year regardless of if Master Raphael will come back or not."
"Point taken. I will not chase you if that happens."
After paying for what I had chosen, I thought the alpha king would go home, but he did not. He said we would have our last stop. Saying he will buy something.
"Are you sure? You have a lot on your hands. Could you give me some? I will help you carry them."
Foolish, I know, but I could not walk alone if I did not do anything dirty.
"My Queen. This is nothing. This weighs nothing. I am a man. Besides, walking is already difficult for you. I don't want you to suffer anymore."
My heart melted at his concern, even if I stopped myself from feeling those. However, Maxxwell kept throwing sweet words my heart could not handle.
I caressed my tummy when I felt my little pumpkin kick. "T-the baby..." I trailed off.
Maxxwell tilted his head, and he frowned. "Yes, my Queen?" Jis face paled. "Are you kb on labor?"
"No! It will happen next week."
I looked away and turned my attention to the animals displayed. "He likes hearing your voice."
Maxxwell's eyes brightened. "He likes his father. And that is me," he said with pride. "I can't wait any longer when he is with us. I will be the best father he could have, my Queen. I will shower him with all the
love."
I returned my gaze to the road. As we moved farther, the displays were getting smaller, and we saw the coffee shops and flower shops on each side and the different stores displayed. I inhaled deeply when the
strong smell of coffee hit my nose.
My mouth watered.
I wanted to drink, but they said drinking coffee was bad for pregnant women.
"Are you sure about that, Maxxwell? My little pumpkin will be the most stubborn and playful child in the palace. His laughter will fill the empty halls."
Maxxwell smiled. "He sure will."
"I just hoped he would not be a womanizer. I want him to love only one woman-his mate or even not as long as he will be happy with her."
The alpha king cleared his throat while red tainted his cheeks. "If he is as handsome as me, we cannot evade the impossible. He will be a ladies' man, my Queen, but I will teach him even in his early age that
women should be respected at all times."
From the corner of my eyes, Maxxwell was really happy as we talked about our child. This was the first time we talked about the baby, and it brought me some comfort, easing my mind and telling my heart that I
was not alone.
So, this was feeling like I had someone to rely on. It seemed surreal.
"Will you?"
"Yes, my Queen."
"How will you explain your concubines to my child?"
"Our child," he corrected. "I never touched any of them, my Queen. They may say something different, but I am asking you to please believe in my words just for once. After your departure, I could never fathom
touching any woman." 2
"H-how about my sister? D-did something happen between the two of you?"
His steps faltered, and that was enough to know the answer.
"Don't answer my question, Maxxwell." It was a mistake to bring my sister's name. I ruined the mood. "I know the answer to that."
"River...I'm sorry."
"It's not your fault. Werewolves are typically sexual beings. And both of you are mates, to begin with. It was natural to have sex."
We continued walking. I glanced around. We were getting away from the marketplace, and the road was downhill.
"Where are we going?"
I wiped the sweat from my forehead.
Walking was a good exercise for pregnant women, and I had no issues about it.
"I want you to see what my palace could offer."
"You don't have to, Maxxwell." This will be temporary-everything about it.
"Why? Are you already tired? I can carry you in my arms, my Queen."
With all the things he was carrying? What did he think of himself?
"I don't appreciate your jokes, Maxxwell. So where are we?"
My knees were already trembling because of the downhill walk. However, I did not want him to be scared that he would carry me.
"Here."
Maxxwell stopped and released a breath. I followed his gaze and looked at the beautiful scenery before us. The blue sea extends infinitely with warships floating like jellyfish. The rays of the sunlight were
beautiful as they kissed the water.
"Do you like it, my Queen? When you were my personal attendant, I failed to tour you around my kingdom."
"You were busy looking for Zenith because you believed she was alive, and you were right. But no hard feelings, Maxxwell. That time, I was nothing but your servant who had the guts to propose the alpha king
himself."
"Back then, everything was simple."
"It sure was. All you cared about was fucking women and looking for my sister."
"You could say that."
I put some strands of my hair on the corner of my ears when the sea breeze hit me hard. The salty taste of air entered my nostrils, and I loved every inch of that. It was only rare for me to see the ocean, and I never
regretted following Maxxwell here.
"Thank you for inviting me here. For once, you did something I was happy about."
He looked at me sheepishly. "Thank you for the compliment. Do you want to go to the ships? The beta is there, and the delta is. If you want to talk to them, you can go."
"What about you?"
"I will stay at your side whenever you go, my Queen."
It felt like there were some butterflies in my stomach.
"Is it okay if I watch them for a moment?"
"I don't think that is an issue, my Queen."
"What about you?"
"What about me?"
I nibbled my lower lip, and he watched my actions. Realizing I looked like I was seducing him, I stopped and slowly walked.
When I did not hear him, I glanced over my shoulder and asked, "Will you join me?"
The alpha king hesitated. I understand his reaction. I had constantly been rejecting him. Saying I could not forget that he killed Zenith.
But what if I were wrong? What if hating him was one of the biggest mistakes I was making right now?
"Do you want me?"
"I need someone who will support me, silly," I answered and offered my hands for him to accept.
Right now, I want to think of the present and not of the past. This will only be for one year. After this, I will leave the alpha king on his own. The greatest revenge I could ever give him.
