In one instant the man was standing, with the pure intention of killing me and the next thing I know the alpha king charged and cut off one of his arms.
The man cried in pain as blood came out like waterfalls. He staggered forward, dropping the daggers and watched at his decapitated limbs.
My body went cold as I stared at the blood.
I thought the alpha king would kill the man, but Maxxwell knocked him unconscious.
Scowling, I watched him pick up the dagger and throw it away, then called his guards, and the next thing I knew, the door burst open with the beta and two guards.
As if Beta Valentine already knew what had happened and what to do, he ordered the guards to pull the unconscious man and dragged him away.
"Your orders, Your Highness?"
"Stop the bleeding and interrogate."
The beta threw a look in my direction, before nodding and shut the door.
"Just like that, Maxxwell?" I asked, facing him. I scoffed. "Interrogate? That's the best you could do? That bastard nearly killed me and Quinn!" I cried.
He did not answer. At first his eyes were fixated on the previous man's location and on the blood as if he was in a trance.
"Maxxwell!"
He looked at me, but he was breathing heavily.
Maxxwell's fist trembled.
away on the floor.
"Answer me! If you don't want to, I will kill that bastard, myself. I don't care if I kill someone tonight."
I was on the brink of going after Beta Valentine, but Maxxwell breathed deeply. "You don't know how much I wanted to rip his throat and tear his body to pieces, River." His voice was the combination of two- Denaro and Maxxwell.
I stilled when I realized his eyes flashed with gold as if he was at the very edge of being taken over by his beast.
That reassured me a bit.
I thought he did not care anymore.
I heaved a sigh while caressing my tummy. I nearly died and my child. If he did not arrive on time, I would be dead by now.
Hugging myself, I slumped on the nearest chair.
The stench of blood made me even sicker.
"I was so scared at that time, Maxxwell," I whispered, pouring my emotions. I let out a shaky breath.
The alpha king's eyes softened and gone was his golden eyes.
He stepped forward to where I was sitting, held his hand in the air as if to console me, but thought otherwise.
"I'm sorry, River. I was not in my room at that time. I-I rushed immediately when I heard you call me. Seeing you, nearly dying under my watch made me remember what happened during the Proclamation
Ceremony."
He hung his head low.
"I thought...I will also lose you."
A thick silence passed between us. His sorry and worry was so thick that I could smell it from him.
I was a bitch, right? I was only concerned about me and not this man.
It served him right after he killed Zenith, another part of my mind said.
Did he deserve it? Until when will I continue hating him? I did not want to give birth and my child will see I hated his father.
"What will you do with him?"
His eyes glinted dangerously while fisting his fist. "Fish out information from him."
"And if he won't talk? Maxxwell. He is an assassin tasked to kill me. Someone had ordered him to assassinate me and that kind of man was one of the toughest people to break if he swore his allegiance to his
master."
Maxxwell pulled his hair in frustrations.
"Do you know now why I keep on pressing you to stay in my room, River? It's because of situations like this. You keep on insisting you can protect yourself. Did you do it earlier? Did you protect yourself?"
I fell silent and nibbled my bottom lip.
It was my pride that told me I could do it. I never wanted to ask for any help from him.
"I am pregnant. Moving is different."
"You know you are pregnant, yet you let your ego dictate you. River. There is no time to waste. Whether you like it or not, you will stay in my chamber for the time being until the threat to your life will not be
eliminated."
My eyes bulged. "You won't dare."
"I will do it after what happened to you. You never knew what I felt earlier. I had been too understanding to you. But now, you have to listen to me. We will be following my decisions from now on. End of discussion."
No matter how much I forced myself to sleep, I could not do it.
"Move over, Maxxwell. The bed is big enough for three people. Stop crowding me, well you?" I grunted when he edged closer to me. I could not move anymore because it was already difficult. "How could I sleep when it feels like you're suffocating me?"
This man was also making it more difficult to sleep.
I had no choice but to agree with his decisions. Unfortunately, he was right this time. And if it was all about the safety of Quinn, Maxxwell knows best.
That was why I was back in the alpha king's chamber and was flooded with the memories from the past. Of my stay here as his personal slave.
Then...Every now and then, images of the man trying to kill me resurfaced in my mind.
A shiver ran down my spine.
It would take a lot of time before the stench of his blood would disappear in that room and I was not sure if I could sleep there peacefully again knowing someone might be able to infiltrate the room again.
"I am not doing anything, River," he answered, his voice tired.
One of his hands was on his forehead, while he was deep in thought.
After Beta Valentine pulled the man away, he never left my side until we reached his room.
The light from the candlelight flickered.
"If you want to go to Beta Valentine that badly, you can. Leave me."
"So that the one behind this will be sending another assassin to finish his unfinished task? No, thank you. You are stuck to me, woman. You accept it."
"I'm trying to, okay? Let me adjust again. Sleeping with you here is not that easy. Plus, you're huge."
"I hope that is a good thing."
"It isn't if your mind is not dirty."
"Any news from the beta?"
He growled. "Nothing. When you will sleep, I will go there personally. Asked Isagani to guard the door while I am out."
"Where exactly are you referring to?"
"Dungeon."
Ugh. That stinky place where I met Tristan.
"Will you tell me specifically what the beta did to that bastard?"
"Why? Do you pity him? Don't be. He nearly succeeded in killing you. The best thing you should do is hate that bastard."
I heaved a sigh. "Who do you think wants me dead?"
"I cannot narrow it down. I had a lot of enemies at hand who all wanted me to fail everyone dear to me. Including this kingdom. It's still easy to tell. And if I found out who is it, I would make sure that he would
regret ordering someone to kill you."
The alpha king rolled to his side and stared at me intently. "I did not give anyone the right to harm you, my Queen. So whether you find me irritating or not, accept the fact that I will be your tail, your dog wherever you go. I don't want to lose you and our son. You got that?"
I grabbed another pillow and put it between my legs. "I don't need you to guard me twenty-four seven. Your people-"
"Our people," he corrected.
"No. Your people would think something would happen to me."
"Because that is the truth. Let's not hide that."
I groaned. "But Maxxwell. I don't want that."
His eyes narrowed. "I am done listening to your wants. The last time I listened to it, it nearly cost your life. Not this time."
I grunted. "Maxxwell."
"Don't Maxxwell me, River. That will never happen. Sleep now."
"Do you think I could do that after what happened? That man will give me a nightmare for a few nights, Maxxwell."
"It's your stubbornness which was the reason for that. If you only did not listen to me-"
Not wanting to hear any more of his rantings, I closed both of my ears using my hands.
"I don't want to listen anymore."
He threw me an irritated look. "Fine. Don't tell me I did not tell you."
I poked both of his cheeks which made him still.
Realizing what I had done, I stopped and averted my gaze.
"You can do whatever you want to me, my Queen."
Suddenly, Sunflower rose. 'Now is your chance, River!'
'Chance for what?'
'Your so slow, are you?'
'I don't understand you. Speak in English, Sunflower.'
She rolled her eyes at me. "Slow always. What else? It's your time to seduce him.'
'Excuse me? Why would I seduce Maxxwell? Have you not heard what just happened to me earlier? I nearly died, Sun. Seducing the alpha king is the last thing I want to do right now.'
'Fool. If I were you, my hands would be all over the alpha king's body right now. He is waiting.'
'Stop saying nonsense, Sun.'
I looked at the alpha king and the way he was looking at me told me Sunflower may not be saying nonsense.
