I was right.
The alpha king was in the dungeon and was torturing the man for information that he would or may not fish out from him. Even if I was still in the mouth of the entrance, I could hear the man's screams of torture.
I wondered what kind of torture did Maxxwell gave?
On the other side, someone was snoring peacefully despite the screams.
I tilted my head and looked at Delta Isagani. He did not stop tailing me. "Is there like some kind of hidden room inside the dungeon?" For torture?
"That is classified information, Your Grace."
"Classified? How come?"
"Only a few chosen trusted men know about it."
"I doubted it's a secret."
Here it was. The alpha king's hideout for the meantime.
The urge to see him again was too strong. I want to see him.
With that in mind, I gathered the hem of my clothes and stepped forward when Delta Isagani stopped me.
"You are not allowed to enter, Your Grace," Delta Isagani informed me.
"Why not? I have been here a couple of times. Sleep in the dungeon. Met a few prisoners and almost made friends with them. I see no problem, Delta Isagani." If he followed me this far, why not until I reached the alpha king?
He breathed a couple of times. His stress because of me reached the sky.
"The dungeon is not a place for pregnant women. His Highness will kill me if he sees you here," he explained. He looked around. "We must go back when the alpha king is not here."
Delta Isagani was genuinely scared of the alpha king.
Poor him.
My heart fell for him and tried to console him.
"He will not kill you, okay? Like literally. You are one of the alpha king's warriors. Killing you is not the best thing. I assure you. No one will be killed tonight."
Delta Isagani threw me an irritated look. "Easy for you to say because you will not be punished. It is I, Your Grace."
That name again.
"Stop calling me Your Grace, will you? I hate it. There is only one queen and that is my sister Zenith. I am only here temporarily. Then, I will leave after a year." That was our agreement with the alpha king. And I want to honor that agreement until the end.
Shock registered his face followed by pain.
Hurt crossed his beautiful eyes. "You...you are leaving? I thought everything was already fine between you too. You are leaving like Dawn?"
"No man can imprison us," I muttered.
I touched the bridge of my nose when I caught a whiff of the stinky dungeon.
Damn.
I felt like I was going to get sick.
Delta Isagani stepped backward.
The night was still chilly. Too good that werewolves did not quickly get sick. If not, I would be sneezing by now.
"Imprison? Is that what you think we are doing? Imprisoning both of you? We are not detaining both of you, Your Grace. We only mean to protect you. There is a big difference between the two, okay?"
"River," I corrected. "Well, too bad that is what we think right now. Men loved taking control of their women. Well, news flash. You are suffocating us, Delta Isagani."
Delta Isagani hung his head low. "Did Dawn also think that I am restricting her?"
I looked at him with confusion. "I don't understand what you are-" Then, it hit me hard. "Y-You like her? As in you truly like her?"
Delta Isagani did not utter a word for a while but said, "Yes. I like her."
"But you two are not mates. Are you okay with that? There will only be a high chance of pregnancy compared to being mates."
A union between two werewolves who were not mates was rare.
I asked Dawn about Delta Isagani. If the two were mates, but the woman said they were not. Which means Delta Isagani did not only have a crush on the woman but also liked her for real.
"I know," he said softly. "I don't care if we are not mates. Women have been rejecting me even though we are mates. They do not like me. They always prefer the alpha king. However, I don't have any ill feelings toward the alpha king. I long to accept that women will always prefer men who are always on the top. I am at the bottom. Dawn...she is different."
I put both of my hands on his shoulders and slightly shook him.
"Do you hear what you are saying, Delta Isagani? Women like you." The servants did. I heard them saying in the kitchen how handsome this man was. And how sexy his butt looks. But he did not have to know that. "Their eyes would follow you whenever they see you, okay?"
"It's too late to say that. Dawn had already left the palace. And you will follow. Did the alpha king know you would leave?"
Hesitant, I nodded. "He knows about it."
"See? You will go after Dawn. All of you are good at leaving me."
That was a little true.
"Why won't you look for her if you truly like her? Because if you continue staying here in the palace, you will never be with her."
He scratched the back of his head. "The alpha king needs me to protect you."
I folded my arms in front of my chest. "See? You do not like her that much. You always have an alibi not to pursue her."
I would be beyond happy if the two will be the end game. They already suffered and hurt so much. I want nothing but happiness for the two of them.
"I like Dawn!" he exclaimed, voice rising. The guards inside the dungeon looked at us, then went back inside. "I like her. A lot. She is not like my other mates. She...she knows the real me."
"And? You will continue giving me that lame excuse that you are busy? Oh, come on, Delta Isagani. You are no longer a child. Beta Valentine will take your role while you look for her."
Delta Isagani exhaled. "I cannot leave His Highness. Not now. Maybe after everything will get settled."
I bit my lower lip and groaned.
Ugh!
Why were the alpha king's men too loyal? Duty above love life. They were infuriating.
I pushed him aside. "You make love to Maxxwell, instead."
Then, I entered the dungeon and looked for Maxxwell and his group.
Upon spotting me inside, the guards (whom I still remember before) stopped me. "You're not allowed here. The alpha king said no one will be allowed to unless it's a matter of life and death."
"I am the queen of this kingdom, and I have the right to rebuke his orders."
"But..."
Delta Isagani was already beside me. "Your Grace. It is still dark. Why don't you talk to the alpha king when he is done?"
Back to that again?
"No," I turned him flatly. "I want to see Maxxwell now."
Delta Isagani nudged me to his side. "Your Grace. Perhaps the baby wants to sleep now?"
"Quinn is always sleeping. Hey, you!" I said, talking to the guard. "Call His Highness for me. Tell him I won't return to our chamber if he does not come here."
The prison guard did not budge. Which I did not like a bit.
I stomped my foot in anger.
The prison guard and Delta Isagani looked at each other. The latter sighed and waved his hand. "Go to the alpha king and relay the queen's words."
I glared at the prison guard when our eyes met. "The next time I will be proclaimed as a queen, I will be punished for this insubordination," I lied, gathering all my hate.
I felt my tummy harden. Damn. Getting angry was not beneficial to the baby at all.
"Forgive your mommy, Quinn," I told my mind while caressing my tummy. "You want to see your father, right? You will see him again."
'Liar. Quinn is not the one who wants to see him. It is you, right?' Sunflower whispered in my mind.
She danced around in circles, taunting me.
'Stop that, Sun. Stop reversing my words.'
She snorted. 'Oh, please. As if you can fool me. I would be the last one you could fool, okay?'
"You won't change your mind, do you?"
"Shhh. Stop talking now, Delta Isagani. Or the prisoners will awaken."
"They are already awake. They are questioning why a pregnant woman is inside this stinky dungeon."
"If you find them stinky, you should give them a bath."
"That's not my job, Your Grace."
I slapped his stomach, only to find out it was full of muscles. "Aw."
"Are you okay? Let me see."
Before Delta Isagani grabbed my hand, the alpha king's booming voice echoed across the dungeon. The prisoners scampered away and went to the darkest part of their cell as if they did not want the alpha king
to see them.
"Your Grace," he called. "You are here."
I lifted my brow. It was usually River or my Queen.
Delta Isagani stiffened beside me.
"Your Highness. I tried to stop her but she would never listen to me, Your Highness. Please punish me for failing you."
"The delta has nothing to do with it. It was I who forced my way in here. Tried to talk to me, but I did not listen to him."
"Why are you here? I instructed the delta to guard you. I was not expecting you here."
"It's not his fault."
"No. It is his fault for bringing you here. This place stinks. This is the last place you should be," he demanded.
I placed my hand on his arms, trying to calm him.
That was not what you wanted to do, River.
Again. It was Quinn.
'How long will you continue lying to yourself? You want the alpha king! Admit it!'
"Go back to your quarters, Isagani. I will deal with the queen myself."
Delta Isagani hesitated before he gave way. "Understood, Your Highness. You can call me if you want me to do something."
The delta quickly stepped out of the dungeon.
"Now. We will go back to my chamber."
Gently but firmly (leaving me without a room for arguments), the alpha king guided me towards his chamber without saying anything.
His shoulders were taut. His muscles were rigid and he walked stiffly.
When we reached his chamber, he continued giving me the cold shoulder.
"Do you have plans on facing me or not?"
"Why did you come out? In the middle of the night? Another assassin might be coming after you. Have you not thought about that?"
I did not.
All I wanted...no. All Quinn wanted was to see his father and I gave it to him.
However...
Oh, boy. He was not happy at all.
"I'm asking you the same question, Your Highness."
"You. Could. Have. Been. Killed."
His fist trembled while he gritted his teeth.
"I just want to see you, okay? I want to know f there are some improvements. Quinn wanted to see you."
The alpha king stared at me hard and before I knew it, he pulled me closer to his body and engulfed me with a hug. Then, his body shook.
"Don't. Ever. Do. That. Again."

        I was right.
