I'd barely been in the holding cell when hurried footsteps echoed outside.
Mom burst through the door, eyes red and swollen, rushing straight to me.
"Mira!"
Her voice shook as she wrapped me in trembling arms.
Dad followed, face dark as thunder.
"Mira Channing! Have you lost your damn mind? Do you have any idea what you're doing?"
The officer frowned at our family drama.
Dad immediately bowed ninety degrees, voice shaking.
"Officer, I'm so sorry. This kid must be going through something. We'll cover all damages—please, just let us take her home."
Mom grabbed my hands, sobbing uncontrollably.
"Mira, come home with me. Whatever's wrong, we'll talk at home..."
Looking at their desperate faces, my heart felt like it was being carved out with a knife.
In my past life, it was because of me that they couldn't hold their heads up in public.
Dad sold the house to pay for my lawyer.
Mom cried herself to sleep every night.
Both died heartbroken before I got out.
But this time, I had to stay put.
It was the only way to protect them.
The officer was ready to process my release out of sympathy for my parents.
I jumped up and pointed at an empty corner, screaming.
"I'm not going back! I committed a crime! I belong in prison!"
My voice was hysterical, making Mom stumble backward.
"He made me do it! He's been following me! Can't you see him?!"
I pointed at the wall, eyes wild with terror, body shaking.
"He's laughing! He's right there laughing!"
My parents froze in shock.
Mom covered her mouth, tears streaming down her face.
"Mira, what are you talking about? There's nothing there!"
Dad was shaking with rage as he spoke to the officer.
"Officer, she must be having some kind of mental breakdown! She's never like this!"
I seized the moment and yelled at the officer.
"Yes! I have mental problems! I need a psychiatric evaluation!"
I ramped up the performance, clutching my head and spinning in circles.
"They're all out to get me! Everyone wants to hurt me! I need to stay here! It's safe here!"
The officers exchanged glances—procedure demanded they follow my request.
A young officer tried to calm me down, but I shoved his hands away and cowered in the corner.
"Don't touch me! I know you're all in on it!"
Mom completely broke down, collapsing to the floor, sobbing her heart out.
"Mira, it's my fault. I shouldn't have left you alone out there. Let me take you home to see a doctor, okay?"
Seeing her despair almost made me abandon the whole plan.
But I couldn't!
I had to be ruthless.
"I don't know you people! You're here to hurt me too!"
Dad charged over, trying to drag me out by force.
I screamed at the top of my lungs.
"Help! They're trying to kidnap me! HELP!"
The officers had to restrain Dad before the situation spiraled out of control.
Finally, they had to escort my parents outside to wait.
Through the door crack, I watched Mom slumped on the bench like a broken doll.
Dad chain-smoked, his back bent like a shrimp.
They were whispering urgently—Mom kept shaking her head while Dad punched the wall in frustration.
