My parents were temporarily moved outside, but they wouldn't leave, camping out on the bench outside the interrogation room.
Through the door, Mom's muffled sobs cut my heart like a blade with each sound.
A young female officer brought me hot water, her voice gentle: "Hey, drink some water first. We can talk through whatever's bothering you."
I knocked the cup out of her hands, hot water splashing everywhere, soaking her uniform.
"It's all lies! You're all trying to hurt me!" I huddled in the chair, shaking all over.
The officer's face darken, completely giving up on reasoning with me.
She wiped her uniform and stepped back, eyes filled with wariness and resignation.
Mom's desperate voice came through the door: "Let me in! I need to see my daughter!"
Footsteps approached, and Mom burst through the door with Dad trying to hold her back.
"Mira!" Mom rushed over, tears streaming down her face. "Come with me, we'll see a doctor. I'm begging you!"
The wall clock showed 8:25 PM.
My heart was pounding—it was time.
Their final operation should be starting right about now.
I shoved Mom away hard, hiding behind the officer, screaming at the top of my lungs: "Don't touch me! You're all bad people! You want to hurt me!"
Dad rushed in to help Mom, who had fallen to the floor. The look he gave me was full of disappointment and heartbreak.
That look pierced right through me, sharper than any knife.
"Mira, what's gotten into you?" Dad's voice trembled. "How have we wronged you?"
I didn't answer.
Instead, I staring at the clock...
8:28 PM.
8:29 PM.
8:30 PM.
The moment the minute hand jumped, I felt some invisible shackle suddenly release.
The tragedy of my past life was playing out in another timeline.
This time, I wasn't there.
I suddenly stopped the chaos, like I'd become a completely different person.
"Officer, I'm tired." My voice was eerily calm. "I plead guilty. Please detain me."
The instant transformation left everyone stunned.
How could someone go from completely unhinged to terrifyingly composed in seconds?
Mom stared at me wide-eyed, tears still on her cheeks.
Dad clenched his fists, veins bulging: "Mira, what the hell game are you playing?"
I didn't answer, just leaned back in the chair and closed my eyes.
The officers looked at each other uncertainly, finally deciding to hold me for observation.
"Mr. and Mrs. Channing, we suggest you come back tomorrow. Your daughter's condition..." the senior officer trailed off.
Dad helped Mom to her feet.
At the doorway, Dad turned back for one last look.
That gaze was filled with such despair and confusion
The holding cell was tiny—just a hard cot and a toilet.
The wall-mounted TV was playing the evening news, the financial anchor's voice flat: "Nexus Tech saw unusual stock fluctuations today as authorities launch an investigation..."
I closed my eyes as tears silently fell.
Dad, Mom, I'm sorry.
Just wait a little longer.
This will all be over soon.
