The next morning, unfamiliar cars lined the street outside the police station.
When they dragged me from the holding cell, I was still groggy until I saw the strange faces in the interrogation room.
"Raven Channing, last night at 8:30 PM, five million dollars was illegally transferred from Nexus Tech's accounts."
The speaker was a middle-aged man who showed me his credentials as captain of the city bureau's economic crimes unit while he spoke.
His tone was ice-cold—nothing like yesterday's gentle female officer.
I stared at him wide-eyed: "Five million? What are you talking about? I just smashed some bikes!"
The captain slammed a thick stack of documents on the table: "Every transfer was completed using your personal authentication keys and digital signature! The evidence is rock solid!"
My mind went blank.
How was this possible? I was clearly...
"Knock, knock, knock!"
Urgent knocking came from outside.
The door opened as Damon and Skye walked in, followed by my parents.
Mom's eyes were swollen like walnuts, Dad's face was ashen—clearly neither had slept.
"Officer, we have crucial information to report!" Skye said through tears.
She looked toward my parents, voice trembling: "Mr. and Mrs. Channing, I didn't want to say anything, but now... Raven's been addicted to online gambling lately and owes huge debts. Last night she stole my laptop, and I suspect..."
"Impossible!" Mom snapped. "My daughter would never do such a thing!"
Skye pulled out her phone and played a recording: "This is what Raven said while drunk two days ago."
My voice came through the recording, slurred and unclear: "I'm gonna get a huge pile of cash... pull off this one job and never have to fear anyone again..."
WTF?!
When was this recorded?
I had no memory of it whatsoever!
Dad's face went chalk white.
Damon also pulled out his phone: "Officer, these are my chat logs with Raven. She'd been asking about the company's internal financial systems..."
Screenshot after screenshot showed chat records of me asking about company account passwords.
The words were mine, the profile picture was mine, but I swear I never sent those messages!
"And this." Skye produced an encrypted USB drive. "We found this in Raven's dorm yesterday. It's full of overseas banking documentation."
The officer plugged in the drive.
The screen filled with code and bank documents I couldn't understand.
"Raven, what were you planning?" Dad's voice shook.
I wanted to explain, but had no idea where to start.
Just then, another officer entered and whispered something to the captain, whose expression grew even grimmer.
"Mr. and Mrs. Channing, did you receive any debt collection calls last night?"
Mom nodded as fresh tears welled up: "Someone said Raven owed them three million... I thought it was a scam call..."
Damon shook his head and sighed: "Mr. and Mrs. Channing, Raven's strange behavior yesterday was actually guilt from planning the crime."
Skye added through her tears: "I never imagined she'd go this far... It's my fault for not catching her problems sooner..."
All the evidence pieced together perfectly, pointing to the same conclusion—I was the audacious financial fraud mastermind!
Hearing all this, Mom swayed and collapsed unconscious.
"Mom!" I rushed forward but was blocked by officers.
Dad caught Mom's falling body, looking back at me with pure despair and disbelief.
"Raven..." His lips trembled. "Why... why would you do this?"
In that moment, all my grievance and fury exploded: "I didn't! I really never did any of these things!"
But nobody believed me.
The captain stood up and waved: "Take her away. File this as a major economic fraud case."
Heavier handcuffs locked around my wrists, ice-cold and cutting.
Overnight, I'd gone from a public order violation suspect to the prime suspect in a five-million-dollar major criminal case.
