I stared at the so-called "ironclad evidence," watched my mother being carried away by paramedics, saw my father age before my eyes, my heart hammering in my chest.
It was happening again. The same courtroom from my past life, the same despair, the same helplessness.
I'd studied law for four years and knew exactly how devastating digital signatures and authentication keys could be as evidence.
That's what destroyed me last time—any defense seemed pathetically weak.
The Economic Crimes captain spoke coldly: "We brought in Professor Martinez from your school. He's heartbroken."
The door opened.
My most respected mentor walked in, silver hair disheveled, exhaustion in his eyes.
He looked at me with disappointment and confusion.
"Raven, why?" Professor Martinez's voice trembled. "I taught you for four years. How could you..."
This hurt more than any accusation. I hung my head, unable to meet his eyes.
"I didn't do it." My voice was barely audible. "My signature and keys were stolen."
The officer scoffed: "Stolen by who? Damon? Skye? They have solid alibis, plus they're the ones who reported you."
Dad was called in for questioning, trembling as he spoke: "She wasn't normal yesterday. Could someone have been controlling her?"
But he had no evidence.
The officer's voice grew colder: "Raven Channing, the evidence is overwhelming. What else do you have to say?"
I broke down crying, tears streaming down my face.
I curled up in the chair, looking utterly hopeless and defeated.
"I really never did these things!" My voice was hoarse. "Please, you have to believe me!"
Professor Martinez sighed and turned to leave.
His retreating figure looked so disappointed.
The Economic Crimes captain waved his hand: "File as major economic fraud, criminal detention."
Outside the station, reporters pointed cameras at Damon and Skye.
Damon faced the cameras with a pained expression: "None of us expected Raven to do something like this. She's betrayed everyone's trust."
Skye cried prettily for the cameras: "We deeply sympathize with her parents and hope they can stay strong."
On phone screens, the news headlines had already appeared: "Law School Prodigy Turned Million-Dollar Fraudster: Human Nature's Corruption or Hidden Truth?"
I was escorted down the hallway, brushing past my father.
Just as I was about to be transferred to the detention center, I suddenly looked up at the Economic Crimes captain.
"Officer, can you confirm the time of the crime was last night at 8:30 PM?"
The captain waved impatiently: "The evidence is solid. What are you trying to argue? Let's go!"
I smiled.
"So where was I between 8 and 9 PM last night?"
Every officer in the interrogation room froze.
They'd been so focused on the fraud case, they'd completely overlooked my "backstory."
I spoke each word clearly: "I was outside your station smashing bikes, then locked in your holding cell.
The entire time was recorded on surveillance with dozens of officers as witnesses."
