Alex sat on the couch watching Chloe try on dress after dress.
"How's this one?"
He nodded mechanically, but suddenly thought of Evelyn.
Little Evelyn used to follow him around in princess dresses, saying she'd wear the prettiest wedding gown and be his bride someday.
Back then, the idea didn't totally gross him out.
When did that change?
Probably after he joined the company and got real power.
Every time someone kissed his ass about how much he owed Mr. Steven, his hatred for Evelyn deepened.
That debt felt like chains, and Evelyn was the living reminder of them.
Suddenly he wanted to check on her.
Alex stood up.
"I'm gonna see how Evie's doing. She didn't eat this morning."
Chloe grabbed his sleeve.
"She's just throwing a tantrum. Let her sulk. Don't worry, Mrs. Rodriguez will take care of her."
Alex forced himself to sit back down.
Yeah, that bratty princess needed a reality check.
The honeymoon was perfect.
Everything exactly like he'd imagined.
Except every time he mindlessly scrolled through his phone, no texts from Evelyn.
Alex frowned, feeling oddly irritated.
That night he dreamed of little Evelyn running into his arms, calling him "big brother."
He was grinning, about to scoop her up.
Then jolted awake, realizing it was just a dream.
A month later they came home. No Evelyn waiting.
"She doesn't even greet us when we get back. So rude."
Chloe was bitching about Evelyn's disrespect again.
For the first time, Alex didn't play along.
He gave half-hearted responses and headed for Evelyn's room.
"Alex!"
Chloe called after him, but he ignored her. Her face went sour.
The room felt eerily quiet.
No signs of life anywhere.
He yanked open the closet. Nothing.
"Mrs. Rodriguez!"
Alex's voice shook.
"Where's Evie?"
She kept her head down.
"Miss Steven left a month ago."
Alex frantically dialed Evelyn's number.
"The number you have dialed is not in service. Please check the number and try again."
Shit. Alex panicked.
Maybe he should call Mr. Steven, get her new number.
Chloe slid her arms around his waist from behind.
"She's obviously pissed at us."
"You know how Evelyn is—total princess complex. She's probably sitting somewhere waiting for you to come begging."
Alex wavered.
"But..."
"You spoiled her too much before. That's why she acts like this. Trust me, she'll cave in a few days."
Alex had been worried, but that made sense.
For years, Evelyn chased after him. He never had to make the first move.
Even when she was furious, she always came back. She couldn't stay away from him.
"Worst case scenario..."
Alex muttered to himself.
"I'll make her my mistress. She'd probably thank me for it."
That thought relaxed him.
Chloe leaned against his back, smirking with relief.
