Senna was twisting the whole story, and her lies were full of holes.
But Caspian bought every word without thinking.
He stomped down hard on my fingers. "Can't believe you're this fucking twisted. Apologize to Senna right now!"
I tried to fight back, but he pressed down harder.
"Caspian, we're still engaged. You treat me like this, aren't you afraid people will— Ahh!"
Caspian put more pressure on my fingers.
"You think a fake like you deserves to marry into the Hartwell family? Here's the truth—Senna and I are getting married. I know you're desperate to be my wife, that's why you're pulling all this shit, but you can forget about it. Just bow down and apologize to Senna, and maybe she'll be generous enough to let you live."
The pain was so intense I could barely keep my face straight. Furious and disgusted, I spat through gritted teeth: "Only you would treat some cuckoo bird like treasure. Just wait—I'll be there when you come crashing down!"
The words "cuckoo bird" seemed to hit a nerve with Senna.
She went completely psycho, clawing and hitting me, then grabbed a stun baton from the bodyguard.
"I'm gonna kill you! Kill you!"
Without thinking, Senna raised the baton with all her strength and swung it at me.
Caspian had me pinned down—I couldn't move, could only close my eyes in despair.
But the expected pain never came. Instead, I heard Caspian's panicked voice:
"Uncle..."
I opened my eyes to find Phoenix—who should've been in his hospital room—standing in front of me, taking the hit meant for me.
His face was deathly pale, but he struggled to stay upright as he spoke:
"Caspian, don't let her fool you. This woman isn't the Cross heiress. Seraphina didn't hurt anyone—she's the one who had those thugs kidnap Seraphina."
Caspian stared at the battered Phoenix, completely stunned.
Before he could react, Senna covered her face and started crying.
"So this guy's your uncle? Caspian, maybe we should call off the engagement! Seraphina didn't just kidnap me—she got your uncle to assault me too. If our bodyguard hadn't shown up in time..."
"I can't accept you having such a disgusting uncle. Unless... you cut ties with him completely."
Watching Senna's tears, the last trace of doubt disappeared from Caspian's eyes.
He glared at Phoenix furiously. "Uncle, how could you team up with this bitch to hurt Senna? You've completely disappointed me."
Caspian knocked Phoenix to the ground with a few hits, then grabbed the baton and walked toward me with murder in his eyes.
This was the fourth floor VIP ward—nurses and doctors rarely came up here.
Every blow to my legs felt like it was splitting me open.
"Today you're losing a leg to make up for what Senna went through."
I was completely pinned down, helpless.
Just when I was about to give up hope, I heard rapid footsteps and my brother's furious voice:
"Stop! What the hell are you doing?!"
"You think the hospital is your personal playground?"
I was pressed against the floor, only able to show half my swollen face.
My brother seemed to find me familiar, but couldn't connect this beaten wreck with his pampered sister.
I tried desperately to speak, but they pressed down harder, and blood blocked my throat—I could only make muffled sounds.
My brother looked uncertain. He came over to check on me, but the bodyguard stepped in his way.
The bodyguard looked at my brother with a fawning expression. "Master, what brings you to the hospital so suddenly?"
My brother ignored the question and pointed at my barely conscious form behind him. "What's going on here? What did this girl do to deserve getting beaten like this in a hospital?"
"Attacking a defenseless woman like this—it's bad for the Cross family's reputation."
A flicker of panic crossed the bodyguard's eyes, but he stayed calm. "Just a thief, nothing to worry about. If you don't like it, I'll drag her somewhere else to deal with her."
My brother frowned, still wanting to check for himself.
But the bodyguard deliberately blocked his view again.
This time, my brother's expression completely changed.
