My brother was the Cross family head, a powerful figure throughout the city—even people from the capital had to show him respect. There was no way he'd tolerate a subordinate defying him repeatedly.
Just as my brother was about to lose his temper, Caspian suddenly came over and called out, "Brother-in-law!"
"Brother-in-law, I can vouch for this bodyguard. That woman really did steal something first, so he was just punishing her."
Senna was still pressing my head down, and the blood in my throat kept me from saying a word—I could only keep struggling, trying to get my brother's attention.
But my brother was in a hurry to find someone and decided to ignore the bodyguard's insolence and leave.
Just as the bodyguard was breathing a sigh of relief, my brother suddenly turned around—but he wasn't looking at me. He was looking at Phoenix, who was passed out behind the trash can.
He had someone help Phoenix up and gave Caspian a hostile look. "What happened here?"
Caspian said without missing a beat, "He hurt my girlfriend. Family or not, he needs to pay. Surely Mr. Cross won't interfere in family business."
My brother's expression shifted—I knew he was remembering what I'd said about changing the engagement.
"Phoenix and I have a connection, and I don't believe he's that kind of person. Handle the thief however you want, but I'm taking Phoenix with me."
Caspian wanted to refuse, but one look from my brother—who'd spent years in power—shut him up. He could only watch helplessly as my brother took Phoenix away.
After my brother left, Caspian's ass-kissing expression disappeared.
He kicked me like I was a dead dog. I suddenly started laughing coldly. The pressure on my head was gone, and after coughing hard several times, my voice gradually returned.
"Senna, if you're really the Cross heiress, why didn't you tell him who you were when he was right here?"
Before Senna could answer, Caspian kicked me again, making me curl up in pain.
"Senna is the real Cross heiress. Don't you dare try to cause trouble, you bitch."
But what surprised me was that Senna didn't look guilty or panicked at all.
"Hmph, the Cross family has enemies everywhere. I can't reveal my identity in public like that."
"For my safety, I need to wait until I'm alone with my brother to tell him."
"Now that everyone's gone, why don't you apologize to Senna?"
"If you still won't give in, drowning a suicidal patient in the hospital pool wouldn't be such a big deal."
I bit my lip hard and refused to speak. I'd already died once in my past life—I wasn't afraid of anything this time.
