Alex Walker entered the ward behind him. His assistant, Ethan, came along carrying a bag in his hand. He put the bag on the sofa and greeted the Smith family.
“Miss Ella, get well soon. Young master, your clothes and laptop are in the bag. Now I’ll take my leave. Have a good night.”
Ethan said, concealing the smile in his eyes. He knew how his master had completed two days' worth of work in just a single day.
Ethan had just left when Nina came in with food.
“Alex Walker, why did you bring your clothes and laptop here? You should go home. Mom and I are here for Ella,” Henry Smith said, already aware of Alex’s intentions.
“Brother, you shouldn’t say that. Brother Alex is also worried about me,” Ella said, defending Alex.
Henry looked at his silly sister, who was so eager to send herself into the wolf’s den. Now she’s like this, and even if Alex sold her, she’d help him count the money.
“Henry, Alex—both of you go wash your hands and come eat dinner,” Ella’s mother, Clara Jones, said while serving food, stopping the siblings from bickering.
“Okay, Mom. Come on, let’s wash our hands,” Henry said and took Alex to the bathroom. Ella’s eyes followed them.
“Relax, your brother isn’t kidnapping him—they’re just going to the bathroom,” Ava Brown said, noticing her daughter’s worried look and finding it funny.
In the bathroom, Henry asked directly, “What are you doing here? It’s already night. You can come back in the morning.”
“Aunt Clara is already very worried and she needs proper rest to handle everything. Ella also needs someone to take care of her. As a brother, you can’t really stay with her all the time. She’s sixteen now and turning seventeen soon,” Alex replied righteously.
Henry couldn’t argue with his words. He knew his mom was holding herself together just so Ella wouldn’t worry. And as much as he didn’t like it, Alex was the only other person he could trust to properly care for Ella.
“You should also remember she’s sixteen. Still a child—so stay within your limits,” Henry warned. He knew Alex wouldn’t do anything inappropriate, because he truly cared for Ella. Still, Henry decided he’d go home with his mom. Other than him and Clara, only Alex could be trusted to take care of Ella right now, so he had no choice but to compromise.
“You go home with Aunt Clara. I’ll take care of Ella. Don’t stress yourself out. Aunt needs you now,” Alex said, trying to reassure him.
When Alex and Henry came out of the bathroom, Clara was helping Ella eat while Nina served the rest of the dishes.
After helping Ella with her food, the other three sat down to eat. When they finished, Alex took the initiative.
“Aunt, you’ve been at the hospital all day taking care of Ella. You should go home and rest. I’ll take care of her.”
“Right, Mom, come home with me. Alex will take care of Ella. After all, he’s her fiancé. It’s his duty to look after her,” Henry said through gritted teeth.
“Mom, brother is right. You’ve taken care of me all day. You should rest. Brother Alex is here with me,” Ella added quickly.
Henry looked at his silly baby sister again, so eager to walk into the wolf’s cave. He could only shake his head helplessly.
“Okay, okay. Then Alex, I’ll leave Ella in your care,” Clara finally agreed.
After some time, Clara and Henry left, but not before Henry shot one last warning glance at Alex.
Ella had seen the way her brother glared at Alex. As soon as they left, she asked, “Brother, what was my brother talking to you about?”
“That’s between us men. You don’t need to worry, little girl,” Alex replied, rubbing Ella’s hair. Lately, he’d gotten addicted to doing that.
“I’m not a little girl! I’m a big girl now—I’m already sixteen!” Ella said angrily. Everyone kept hiding things from her like she was still a kid.
“Really?” Alex said, looking at a particular place. Ella noticed where his gaze landed, and her face turned red, remembering what happened the night before.
Seeing her red face, Alex couldn’t help but laugh.
“Okay, okay, I won’t tease you anymore. I’m going to take a bath. Wait for me,” he said with a smile, picking up his clothes and walking into the bathroom to take a cold shower.
It was the second time since last night that he needed a cold shower. It was really hard for him to resist Ella, the love of his life.
