Alex looked at Ella and knew—after she fell into the water, a lot had changed about her. She’d started to see people for who they really were. Their intentions, their masks, even her own family. But what hurt was that now she understood things more than she needed to. The old Ella wouldn’t have thought so deeply about every situation. Not because she didn’t care, but because everyone had always protected her.
She had grown up in a wealthy family with a loving mother and brother. Her father, Henry Smith, was never really attentive from the start, but in front of outsiders, he always put on the show of a caring family man.
Now things were going to change. If it had been the old Ella, she wouldn't have been able to handle it. But the Ella now—she was different. She was starting to see through people.
Alex looked straight into Ella’s eyes. “Ella, I know you want to help your mom and Charles, and you don’t want to see them in trouble. But I want you to be prepared, because there’s a strong chance that your family is going to go through some big changes. But don’t worry—whatever happens, I’ll always be with you. No matter what the situation is, I’ll stand in front of you and protect you from any danger.”
Then he leaned down and placed a kiss on her forehead. Her eyes were already getting heavy from the strong medication, and he knew she might not hear everything he said. But he still wanted to say it—to reassure her that she wasn't alone.
On the other side, Lisa Brown had invited Jackson Bell to meet her at a club.
“Why didn’t you go to see Ella? Don’t you know she’s in the hospital now? As her boyfriend, you should’ve at least gone to check on her. Her family already doesn’t like you—and now she’s injured, and you still don’t visit? They’re going to hate you even more. Do you even realize that?” Lisa yelled at him like he was her assistant, not someone she hired.
Jackson stared at her, eyes burning. “What am I supposed to do? Go there and get beat up? She jumped into the river for me, but it was you who pushed her into doing it. Still, the whole world thinks she jumped for me. You can go see her as her ‘friend’—her family won’t doubt you. But if her brother or that fiancé of hers sees me near her, they’ll kill me. And I’m not stupid enough to die just for some money.”
Lisa’s anger flared. It was she who had hired Jackson to play this love game with Ella. She had planned it all—perfectly. According to her scheme, Ella should’ve been dead by now. But somehow, by some ridiculous stroke of luck, that girl had survived.
And she still needed Jackson.
So Lisa forced herself to calm down, taking a deep breath. “Look, I’ll give you more money. But you have to come with me tomorrow to see Ella.” She was trying to negotiate again.
Jackson rolled his eyes. “Why are you stressing out so much? You know she’s head over heels in love with me. Even if I don’t show up, nothing’s gonna change. She’s completely in my grasp. If I just call her, she’ll come running like a loyal dog. Don’t worry about it.”
Lisa looked at him, furious. He was still living in a dream. Her patience finally snapped.
“Do you even know what’s happening? She’s starting to get close to her fiancé, Alex Walker. She’s already accepted her family’s arrangements. If you don’t act now, you can forget about that luxury life you’re enjoying.”
“Don’t think I don’t know how much money you’ve been taking from Ella every month, with all those fake excuses—and how you’re spending it. If Ella leaves you, then you better be ready to leave behind this comfortable, fancy life too.”
Her words hit him hard, shattering whatever fantasy he was living in. Jackson started to panic. The life he was enjoying now—the parties, the clothes, the drinks—was all thanks to Ella. Thanks to the money she gave him every single month. He couldn’t afford to lose that.
“Alright. I’ll come with you tomorrow to see Ella. We’ll go according to the original plan,” he said to Lisa, already wondering if he should spend a little of her money on a small bouquet for her. After all, it was her money—she at least deserved that.
Lisa didn’t care what he was lost thinking about now. Her goal for meeting him today was accomplished. Now, all she had to do was wait for Ella to fall into the trap she had carefully set.
