On the other side, in the large meeting hall of Smith Enterprises, a heated discussion was going on.
"President Jones, don't you think we should wait for the Vice President before making this important decision?" Aiden raised the objection.
"Right, President Jones, we should wait for the Vice President," some other board members also echoed.
But just as they were speaking, Clara Jones slapped the table with force, and all the people who were against her fell silent.
"First of all, it's President, not Mrs. Smith. You are all in the office, not at a family gathering, so remember to use the correct title. Second, when does a president need to wait for the vice president to check company accounts and take action against corrupt employees?"
Everyone went quiet because they knew they were in the wrong. They had actually forgotten that Clara Jones was the President of Smith Enterprises, because she had never taken any decisions against Charles Smith, and most of the company’s decisions had been made by him in the past. But they couldn’t deny that all the hard work behind those decisions had always been Clara’s.
"But Mrs.—ah, President, you should at least listen to the directors. They also have their opinions," Asher argued. They couldn’t let this investigation go forward, because they would all be doomed if it did.
"Okay then, let's vote. Please raise your hands if you are against this investigation," Clara announced calmly. But aside from the three people who were initially against it, no one raised their hands. Seeing this, the facial color of the three directors turned pale.
"Now, those who are in favor of the investigation, please raise your hands." Including Clara Jones and Henry Smith, ten other members raised their hands.
"Well, the results are clear, so the investigation will go forward."
"Then let’s start this from today," Henry interrupted. He stood up from his chair and walked toward the door of the meeting room. Watching him, not only the other members but even Clara looked confused. Henry opened the door, received a file, and returned to his seat. He pulled out a drive, connected it to his laptop, and a video began playing on the large screen. It continued for eight minutes.
Asher collapsed into his chair at the end of the video. Finally, Henry stood up.
"So, as everyone saw, this video is related to the Yang City resort, which was under Mr. Asher. All the materials used in building this resort were of poor quality, and the actual cost of construction was less than half of what was reported. So, Mr. Asher, now it’s your turn to answer. But you don’t have to answer here—you’ll answer to the police."
Asher knew he was doomed. There was no way left for him to protect himself. He looked at Henry with murderous eyes and, to everyone’s shock, stood up and charged at him. But he was quickly restrained by Clara and Henry’s assistant.
"It’s all your fault! I won’t leave you alive—I’ll drag you to hell with me!"
As Asher was still struggling to attack Henry, the meeting room door opened again, and three men in police uniforms entered.
"Mr. Asher, you are under arrest for fraud. Please cooperate with us," one officer said.
The police forcefully grabbed Asher, who was still trying to fight.
"Thank you, officers, for coming so quickly. You can take Mr. Asher to the station now," Henry said.
"It’s our job, Mr. Smith."
With the police dragging Asher away, screaming and kicking, it was clear he had lost his mind.
Watching Asher’s situation, the other two directors also became nervous. They had also been involved in shady business deals. They looked at each other and exchanged a knowing glance.
"So, that’s all for now. The investigation of all cases from the past twenty years will begin soon. Henry, come to my office." With that, Clara dismissed the meeting and walked out like a powerful force.
When Henry reached Clara’s office, she was already waiting for him.
"Come in. Sit, Henry. Did you notice something odd about Asher? Even in his final moments, he didn’t say a single word about Charles."
Henry had been thinking the same thing.
"I know, Mom. I feel like this whole thing is more complicated than we imagined. That man and that Ava Brown must’ve promised them something huge. That’s the only reason they’re staying this loyal. I mean, if someone’s willing to go down and still not say a word, then the pawn in their hands has either been threatened or promised something extremely valuable."
Clara nodded. She agreed with Henry. The bigger question was—what had Charles Smith promised them? Money could buy people, but this kind of loyalty felt deeper than money. And yet, another question was bugging her.
"Henry, when did you even prepare those files? You didn’t even let me know."
"Mom, it wasn’t just me alone. That was all Alex Walker’s work. I only joined him halfway. After that, we worked together to expose Asher’s wrongdoings," Henry replied.
"That boy… he’s done a lot for us. Especially for Ella. Thank God she’s finally better and has agreed to be with Alex. He’s a very responsible young man—he’ll take care of her like a child," Clara said, taking a deep breath.
