“But the company is still running fine, right? So why do you have to do this? Those people who’ve been working for us for years can’t be put in jail just for small mistakes, right?”
“Small mistakes? Many people spend their whole lives in jail because of these so-called ‘small’ mistakes. So why do you think this one’s still small?” Clara Jones was truly astonished by his shamelessness. How had she never seen through him all these years?
“I don’t care what you think, but you have to drop the lawsuits and stop that stupid investigation.” This time Charles Smith spoke dominatingly, shouting at the top of his lungs.
“And if I don’t drop the lawsuits, what are you going to do?” Clara asked calmly, not affected at all by his domineering tone.
“Then we’ll get divorced immediately,” Charles said with full confidence. He believed Clara would never agree to divorce and stop the investigation. He even planned to demand some shares before agreeing—not realizing how flawed his plan was.
“Okay, then let’s go.”
With that, Clara began packing her things. Charles was dumbfounded—this wasn’t the reaction he had expected.
“What did you say?” he asked, unable to believe it.
“I said, let’s get divorced now,” Clara repeated generously, a small smile on her face.
“Good—very good!” he snapped, pointing at Clara, then stormed out of the office in anger. In his fury, he left his phone behind on her desk—without even checking.
Clara smiled as she watched him leave, thinking, “Hot-headed as ever, with no brain to realize the world doesn’t revolve around him.” She walked to the forgotten phone and picked it up.
“Stupid man left his work phone in my office.” She mused while trying to unlock it. “What could the password be? His birthday won’t work. It’s definitely not mine or the kids’. Lisa Brown’s birthday won’t work either. Only one chance left—and it better not block.” She tried Ava Brown’s birthday—and it worked.
Clara’s eyes dimmed as a pang hit her heart: the password was Ava’s. She had given twenty-four years to this marriage—and this was how it ended? How laughable.
“Don’t worry, Charles. I’ll make this relationship the reason your career ends.” She opened the photos app. The recent pics were from his “business trip”—showing him with his mistress Ava Brown. As she scrolled further, there were photos from the year she was seriously ill in the hospital—working nonstop while Charles enjoyed life with Ava.
“Years of hard work wasted on this.” She whispered. After transferring all the photos and data, she threw the phone back into the corner with force.
Meanwhile, Ava Brown was pacing, anxious.
“That damn Charles—he doesn’t care what nonsense he’s spouting. He thinks he can spoil my plans. But that bitch Clara… what’s gotten into her? Of course she’ll get me this time.”
“She not only fired half my people—what should I do now?” She pulled out her phone and called an associate.
“Listen, we need to shift our plan. No more low-quality materials. Everything in the resort must be top-notch—or we’ll all end up in jail.”
This was the first time she was directly involved—because now she could make money without Charles. And that bitch Clara had ruined everything.
“Don’t worry,” the voice on the line reassured her, “we’ll stay low-profile. Don’t contact me. I’ll reach out if I need anything.” She hung up, relieved that she’d never faced corruption charges before—thanks to using Charles as her shield.
Suddenly, the office door flung open. Charles stormed in, rage written all over his face. He swept everything off the desk, cursing madly.
“That bitch thinks she can do anything just because she’s CEO! She’s forgotten who the real heir is! Just because she’s CEO, she thinks she owns the place!”
Ava sneered silently:
“Huh! He doesn’t even hold the most shares, and as for heirs, I’m going to make sure his shares end up with my daughter. Otherwise, she gets nothing from Smith Group.”
