“Charles, calm down. You can’t ignore your health just because of Clara. You know she only sees money—relationships mean nothing to her. And now that she’s the C.E.O. of the company, she has more say than you. We have to do something, Charles. We need more shares. Only then can we have any say in this company. You should ask Clara for some of her shares. She’s been married to you for so many years—maybe she’ll transfer some to you.”
Charles Smith nodded. She was right. But the real question was: how could he convince Clara Jones to give him her shares when she wasn’t even willing to take back the charges she’d filed against his men?
“You’re right, Ava, but how do we convince her to transfer her shares to me? That bitch has all the control now.”
“Charles, you don’t have to say that. Clara has been married to you for almost twenty-four years. If you talk to her calmly, she might listen. Or you can arrange a candlelight dinner and ask her for the shares there. And if even then she doesn’t agree, you can just threaten her with divorce. I believe she values you more than some company shares.”
She wanted to continue her righteous talk, but Charles cut her off.
“No. She won’t listen to us. I already threatened her with divorce… and she agreed to it.”
“What?! What did you say?” Ava tried to act shocked, but deep inside she was thrilled.
Clara agreeing to a divorce was music to her ears. She had been hoping for this for a long time. If Charles divorced Clara, she could finally become Mrs. Smith. But since Charles hadn’t supported the idea before, she hadn’t dared to push it.
And now, when Clara Jones herself brought up divorce—how could Ava let this golden chance slip? She had to act fast. But not just that—she needed Clara to transfer her shares to Lisa Brown. After all, Lisa was part of the Smith family too. It wasn’t wrong for those shares to stay in the family. She could even use the excuse that she had once declined to take over the He family's jewelry business and passed it to Clara. If she used that angle, she didn’t believe Clara would refuse to hand over the shares to her daughter.
“But before that, think about how we’re going to stop this investigation. If we don’t, no one will be able to save me from jail,” Charles said, now clearly anxious.
He had done too many things behind Clara’s back—and now he was seriously in trouble thanks to her taking this investigation seriously.
Ava was equally worried. “Some of our men are still hidden. One of them is on the investigation team. Contact him. Tell him to send us the report.”
“Right. You’re right. I totally forgot about him under all this pressure,” Charles nodded and took out his phone.
Meanwhile, after school, Ella Smith packed her things and walked toward the school gate. Lisa Brown and Jackson Bell had planned to ask her out, but before they could, Ella had already walked over to the Jaguar waiting at the gate. In the entire capital, only one person had that car—Alex Walker.
Right in front of Lisa, Ella opened the back door and jumped into the car, hugging the person inside. Seeing this, Lisa felt a wave of anger and jealousy crash over her. She tried to catch up to the car, but it drove off right before her eyes.
“That bitch. She has everything! All the good things in the world. Ella... very soon, all of it will be mine. Just wait.”
As Lisa kept glaring at the empty spot where the car had stood, a hand tapped her shoulder.
“What are you looking at? And where’s Ella? Why are you standing here alone? Didn’t you ask me to come here for Ella?” Jackson Bell asked, sounding a little annoyed.
“That bitch already left. You’re late,” Lisa snapped, irritated. Seeing Alex Walker personally come to pick Ella up had made her blood boil.
“You’re useless.” And with that, Lisa turned and stormed off. But she missed the sigh of relief that escaped Jackson.
He wasn’t upset by her tone—he was actually relieved that Ella had already left. After that warning from her, he wasn’t ready to face her again.
But whatever—Ella wasn’t the only rich girl out there. Plenty of other stupid, rich girls would fall for him. He just had to act lovey-dovey and they’d throw money at him.
At a high-end French restaurant, Ella Smith was throwing a tantrum at Alex Walker over a glass of wine.
“Brother Alex, please—just one sip! I promise it’ll only be one sip, pleeeease.”
“No, Ella. You’re not an adult yet, so you can’t drink. Be a good girl and finish your juice.”
Alex was helpless against her spoiled behavior. He still remembered when she was ten and secretly drank from her mother’s wine glass. Just two sips had gotten her drunk—and then she’d had a fever for two days straight.
