"Mom, you are the best!" Lisa Brown hugged her while saying, it was the best idea—if Ella Smith wasn’t willing to be with Jackson Bell, then she could just create rumors about them.
"Okay, you should go to school now and do what I told you to. Leave all the other matters to your mother. You’ll definitely marry Alex Walker in the future—this is your mother’s promise to you."
After sending Lisa to school, Ava Brown came back to her room where Charles Smith was already waiting for her. The moment she stepped inside, Charles grabbed her wrist and pulled her onto the bed.
Inwardly, she felt disgusted by him. Compared to him, those young boys had way more energy and could satisfy her better—but she still had to pretend in bed, just to feed his ego.
"Babe, where did you go so early? Looks like I didn’t work hard enough last night. How about we go again?"
"No dear, it was Lisa. She wanted to talk with me. After all, I’ve been away from her for almost fifteen days. She just missed me."
"Oh right, Lisa is still in the house? Or did she already leave for school?"
"No, she already left. She knows you're tired, so she didn’t want to disturb you."
"My daughter is really thoughtful, unlike the other one," Charles said in an annoying tone.
"Hubby, don’t be upset in the morning. Otherwise, your whole day will be ruined. Be happy for me, okay?" Ava said while resting her head on his chest.
"You’re the only one who truly cares about me." While saying this, he started kissing her lips and his hands slipped under her clothes.
"No hubby, not now. We have something important to discuss."
"What matter could possibly be more important than this?"
"Did you forget about the investigation? Did your man send any information yet?"
"Oh, right. I totally forgot because of that Clara Jones mess. That guy already mailed me the report. They’re looking into every project from the past few years. What worries me the most is the Joy Amusement Park incident. You remember—three workers died back then because of the poor materials we used. They fell from a height and died."
"But didn’t we already settle that matter in private?" Ava asked, her voice filled with doubt.
"Yes, we did settle it privately, but the materials we used were still low-quality. And the money that was supposed to go into maintenance? We pocketed that too. The park’s condition is still terrible, and all of this will come to light if the investigation continues," Charles said, clearly anxious.
"How much money did we take from that project?" Ava asked with a worried tone. Charles had given her almost two hundred million at that time, and she hadn’t asked for the details—back then, it was the first time she had ever seen so much money, and she thought it was all hers. But now, hearing him talk about it again, she wanted to know how much they had really taken.
"Approximately 600 million," Charles replied in an irritated tone.
"What… what did you just say?" She couldn’t believe her ears.
"The total budget for Joy Amusement Park was a billion, and I took 600 million from it."
"Then where did all that money go? You only gave me 200 million. What about the rest, honey?" Ava tried to control her anger. She couldn’t believe he had taken 400 million for himself.
"Darling, don’t you remember the necklace you wanted at that auction? We spent 150 million there. And the QY dress you liked so much—someone else had already claimed it, so I had to pay almost five million to get it. About 80 million went into our daughter’s wardrobe. I invested 100 million in stocks, but my predictions were wrong, and I lost all of it. The rest I used for personal stuff."
Ava felt like having a heart attack hearing all that. If she had known he was using the money from the stolen funds, she never would've insisted on that necklace. The original price was only 50 million, but she wanted to show off in front of her friends and pushed him to get it at double the price. If she had known he’d taken 600 million, she would’ve at least claimed 400 million for herself. She could’ve invested it in her own company. But what’s done is done. She couldn't turn back time.
Her heart was bleeding, but she knew the current situation was more important, so she calmed herself and began to think seriously.
"Hubby, aside from the Joy Amusement Park, are there any other projects we need to be worried about?" She didn’t trust there was only one.
"Actually, there’s one more. We’re directly involved in that one too. But I’ve got someone who can take the blame—he was involved and also benefited from it."
"What project is it, and who’s the person?" Something felt off to her.
"You remember the development project in Jiang City? Our third project. When we stayed there for five months? That’s when you got pregnant with Lisa."
Hearing that, Ava remembered. That year she returned to the country but didn’t go straight to the Jones mansion. Instead, she stayed with Charles in Jiang City for five months and got pregnant with Lisa during that time.
She had believed that now that she was back and living with him, Charles would be loyal. That he’d never touch Clara Jones again. But this man still visited the Capital now and then—and still touched her.
As a result, Clara got pregnant and gave birth to that b*tch Ella Smith. Her daughter, Lisa, had to carry her own surname to hide her identity, while Ella got to be the proud and spoiled princess of both the Smith and Jones families. The engagement between the Smiths and the Walker family ended up going to Ella. Her daughter got nothing.
