"But, Brother Alex, your health is the priority right now. I can study at night, but you’re having a fever—your health is more important," Ella insisted on taking care of Alex Walker.
"Okay... but you can tell the kitchen staff to cook. They’ll make it, okay? You don’t have to cook personally," Alex persuaded Ella to sit next to him while holding her hand.
But it seemed like even the gods were against Alex today, because the moment he held Ella’s hand, the kitchen staff walked in with Alex’s porridge.
Seeing that the staff had brought porridge, Ella quickly stood up to help them. But once again, she didn’t notice that the moment she pulled her hand away, the slight smile on Alex’s face disappeared, and a helpless expression showed instead.
Watching the scene, James couldn’t hold back his laughter. It was rare to see their Second Brother looking so defeated.
Ella looked at James, confused as to why he was laughing. She turned to Alex with a face that said, What’s wrong with this guy?
"Ignore him," Alex replied softly.
Ella nodded and took the bowl of porridge to Alex. James looked at the mutual understanding between the two and felt like a complete third wheel, but still shamelessly stayed there.
"Brother Alex, here, eat this," Ella said, placing the bowl in front of him so he could eat by himself.
Alex, who had expected Ella to feed him, was a little disappointed seeing the bowl placed in front of him. He raised his head only to meet her innocent eyes. Looking into those beautiful eyes, he suddenly felt like he was taking advantage of her.
With a helpless expression, he lowered his head and began eating the porridge. James watched the scene and felt like Alex was raising a daughter instead of a fiancée.
After Alex finished eating, Ella carefully handed him the medicine and a glass of water. Once he took the medicine, Ella looked a bit more relieved—but she was still worried since his fever hadn’t gone down.
"If you two lovebirds are done, can we eat dinner now?" James finally couldn’t take it anymore and said impatiently. Watching them was enough to remind him that he was still a single dog.
"Go back to the James family to eat, don’t disturb us here," Alex coldly chased James out of Starry Villa.
"You—! In front of a woman, friendship means nothing to you," James said, puffing his cheeks before leaving.
“Miss Smith, dinner is ready. Should I bring it here, or would you prefer to have it in the dining room?” the butler asked respectfully.
“Bring it here,” Alex answered coldly before Ella could say anything. The butler nodded and left.
“…”
Ella was speechless. Didn’t he just kick James out for asking to stay for dinner? And now dinner was being served for her… Did Brother Alex have double standards? Ella thought silently but didn’t dare say it aloud.
Once the kitchen staff brought the dinner, Ella ate it quietly under Alex’s gaze. After finishing, she checked his temperature again—his forehead was still burning hot.
"Brother Alex, your forehead is still hot. You still have a fever, and the medicine isn’t working. Let’s go to the hospital," Ella said, clearly worried. It had already been a while since he took the medicine.
"Ya Ya, calm down. We don’t need to go to the hospital. James knows my condition. Whenever I have a fever, it usually lasts three to four days. It’s normal, don’t worry," Alex tried to reassure her.
"You mean you’re going to have a fever for three or four days?" Ella asked in shock. She’d never heard of someone having a fever that lasted so long and still calling it normal.
"It’s okay, Ya Ya. It’s nothing serious. But now you should focus on studying. Bring your books here. If there’s something you don’t understand, you can ask me. After studying, I’ll have someone send you to the Smith mansion," Alex said while gently patting her head.
Hearing his words, Ella felt torn. Brother Alex already had a high fever—how could she bear to leave him alone? But her mom, Clara Jones, was also alone at home since her older brother Charles had gone to City A for business. She was caught in a dilemma.
She took out her phone from her bag and called her mother. Clara Jones was still working late in her office when her phone rang. Seeing her daughter’s name on the screen, a sweet smile appeared on her face.
"Hello, Mom. Where are you right now?" Ella asked with concern. In fifteen minutes, it would be eight, and the working hours of the Smith Company were from ten to seven.
"I’m still at the office, child. What happened? Are you home? Alex told me he would give you extra classes in the evening. I thought you were with him now," Clara asked worriedly. She didn’t want Ella to stay alone at the Smith mansion without her or Henry around.
"No, I’m at Starry Villa now. But Brother Alex is having a fever, so—" Ella wanted to say that she was thinking of staying at Starry Villa for a few days, but it didn’t sound right, so she didn’t finish her sentence.
