Frank's words landed like a lit match in a puddle of gasoline. The backyard exploded into chaos. A firestorm of whispers ripped through the guests.
"Did you hear that? Looks like Mr. Fletcher sent a clear message."
"What did he mean, 'what Zachary truly wants'?"
"Wait, does Zachary actually have eyes on Quinlyn, too?"
Everyone was eating this drama up, looking back and forth between the key players as if watching a tennis match.
Zachary, however, looked like he was about to completely lose his mind. Like a cornered animal, he launched himself at Quinlyn, his hands grabbing for the document. Quinlyn just raised her hand and stepped aside.
"Quinlyn!" he growled through clenched teeth. "What the hell do you think you're doing?"
She held the paper just above her head and said all sweet and polite, "This is my gift."
Yalena said, "Quinlyn, didn't you say you don't like Zachary? Why are you doing this? Was it all a lie? Everything you did was just to impress his grandfather, so you could..."
Yalena let the sentence hang, and her loyal lapdog, Rita, eagerly picked it up. Rita let out a cold, ugly laugh and said, "Oh, I get it now. You just act like you're an angel of human kindness to get what you want.
"When it comes down to it, you're just another girl trying to marry into the Fletcher family. You just realized you couldn't get to Zachary directly, so you found a different way in."
She shot a pointed, pitying look at Yasin. "Oh, poor guy doesn't even realize he's being used as a ladder."
Yasin, however, looked completely unfazed. He was actually enjoying the show, watching Quinlyn tear people apart with words. He positioned himself half a step in front of Quinlyn, arms crossed, assessing the situation.
He thought, 'With Quinlyn's smarts, if she didn't want this drama, she'd be long gone. But she's staying here, messing with these spoiled brats.
'So she's definitely got her reasons. Does it have to do with my character label? Or is this about her own game?'
He glanced up at the space above Quinlyn's head, wondering what her label could possibly be.
After Rita finished her little speech, Yasin glanced over at her and mentally put her on his list. Rita suddenly felt ice-cold dread creep up her spine.
Quinlyn, still smiling, leaned back against Yasin's chest. "Is that jealousy I hear?" she asked Rita, her voice a sweet, mocking coo.
Rita got triggered instantly and forgot all about that creepy feeling. "Not everyone's as shameless as you."
"Oh, so you are jealous," Quinlyn said, peeking up at Yasin's character label before going on. "You have every right to be.
"I mean, look, everyone else at least gets some action, even if it's messy love triangles. But you? You're special. You're all by yourself. Always have been, always will be."
Rita was so mad she couldn't even talk. All she wanted in that moment was to make Quinlyn disappear for good.
Rita would never learn her lesson. Every time she went up against Quinlyn, she ended up on the losing side—but that never stopped her. But here she was again, ready to jump back in.
Rita had totally lost it, but at least Yalena still had her head on straight. Yalena knew the main thing was getting the share transfer agreement out of Quinlyn's hands, not letting Rita start some dumb catfight.
Yalena quickly grabbed Rita's arm, pulling her back from the brink. She turned to Quinlyn and said, "Quinlyn, do you have to be so mean? And if you don't want Zachary, why are you holding onto that document for dear life?"
Yalena actually nailed it. A cool breeze drifted past, making Quinlyn's head feel even lighter, and her smile stretched wider.
Quinlyn shook her head slowly and said, "Yalena, you've never had to worry about money, so you don't get it. Everyone else gets cars and houses. If you take my gift away from me... don't I deserve something back?"
Quinlyn was being so straight-up that nobody could figure out what she was really after. They wondered if she was genuinely clueless about what she was holding.
Besides, they couldn't understand why Quinlyn would care about other people's cars and houses.
Obviously, Quinlyn wasn't after a mere car or a single house. She wanted more, so much more.
"Let's trade gifts. I'll give you this little document you're dying for. My one gift... for three of yours," Quinlyn said with this massive grin, not even trying to hide how greedy she looked.
"Fine, deal," Zachary said right away. He immediately started snatching gifts from other people. And he promised their stunned owners he'd pay them back for their value later.
Then Zachary walked over to Quinlyn, holding the three gifts like a king dispensing charity. "Here," he said, practically shoving them at her. "I hope this satisfies you.
"And I hope that when you're clutching this crap, you remember exactly where you stand. Don't you ever team up with my grandfather to pull a disgusting stunt like this again."
Maybe flashing cash felt too good, because Zachary suddenly puffed up his chest. He looked down at Quinlyn, his expression so full of arrogance and disdain.
The way Zachary was looking down his nose at her pissed Quinlyn off big time. It brought back a flood of unpleasant memories for her.
On top of that, the alcohol was making everything feel wonderfully strange and distorted. Zachary's thick hair was really getting under her skin for some reason.
She held up a hand, cutting him off. "Hang on. Give me a few minutes."
The same-day delivery she'd ordered earlier had just arrived. Without a care for the stunned onlookers, Quinlyn leaned in and whispered something to Yasin.
Yasin listened calmly, then went out to pick up her package. Right when her haters were about to start questioning her again, Yasin came back with a box.
"Alright," Quinlyn said to Yasin, "To make sure you don't feel cheated, let's make it a fair trade. One gift for one gift. Here's your share transfer agreement. And this is... my gift for you and Xavier."
Zachary and Xavier exchanged a look of deep suspicion. They'd have to be idiots to believe Quinlyn was capable of doing anything nice.
"Well?" Quinlyn prompted. "Aren't you gonna open it?"
Hesitantly, the two men took the box. They opened it. And the entire backyard fell dead silent. Inside, there were two bright green wigs.
"So here's the deal. I know you guys have been stressing about going bald. So the first thing I did when I got home was find you two perfect wigs. Go ahead, try them on and see how they look," Quinlyn said.
Zachary glared at her, his voice trembling with rage. "Quinlyn, you've gone too damn far!"
Quinlyn cupped a hand to her ear. "Have I? I thought we were making a deal."
"Even if you have that share transfer agreement," Zachary spat, "it's worthless if we don't get married."
Quinlyn nodded. "I know. So you'd better not push me. For these shares, I'll do whatever it takes. I'll get those shares, even if it means marrying your corpse."
That night, on top of the whole balding drama, Zachary and Xavier had another forbidden topic nobody could ever bring up.
Everyone got told to forget what went down the second they walked out. But Quinlyn still had two priceless photos of Zachary and Xavier saved to her phone. She was incredibly pleased with herself.
"Quinlyn, how can you be so cruel?" Yalena asked. "Aren't you scared you'll get what you deserve?"
Quinlyn tilted her head and thought, 'Cruel? I didn't even get to use the super glue yet.'
