Just moments ago, Quinlyn had been as unyielding as steel. Her whole demeanor screamed, "You can't break me; I live just to spite you." But now, she looked up, gave a solemn nod to Yasin, and murmured, "Yeah."
Both Graham and Chancey almost wanted to snap, "What are you whining about? You left Yarden half-dead, maybe with permanent damage, and here you are, perfectly fine, dressed to the nines, and you dare feel wronged?"
Everyone who knew Graham and Chancey would praise them for their steady composure and sense of responsibility. But now, even these two paragons of stability were on the verge of losing it.
"Why do you feel wronged?" Yasin asked softly, settling beside Quinlyn. His gaze naturally fell on the three across from them, his meaning clear.
Instantly, the room turned into a 2v3 standoff.
Graham and Chancey frowned. They had investigated Yasin, but came up with almost nothing.
They pondered, 'When someone leaves no trace, it means one of two things: either there's truly nothing to dig up, or their influence is strong enough to cover all tracks.
'Given the current situation, it is not the former, so it has to be the latter.'
Quinlyn was a little stunned by Yasin's question. She had just nodded subconsciously. She thought, 'Well, it seems that Yasin is here to back me up. Then I should just complain.'
She cleared her throat lightly and said, "Nothing much. My family seems to think I'm some psycho who fell for Yarden, then turned hateful and decided to torture him to death."
"So, what's the truth?" Yasin asked casually.
His words hit Graham and Chancey like a slap in the face. They'd been grilling Quinlyn this whole time, yet not once had they asked, "What's the truth?"
In that instant, it struck them that Quinlyn's earlier words—"Worried my little sister might see something disturbing, worried Yarden might get hurt"—were incomplete.
Quinlyn should have added, "Did any of you ever stop to wonder what I went through that night?"
Graham and Chancey locked eyes, sharing the same unspoken realization.
And at that moment, Quinlyn was ready to lay out the truth. She said, "They guessed right, but only halfway. Sure, I'm a psycho who wants to torture Yarden to death.
"But that's all there is to it, none of those complicated reasons in between. The truth is, I just can't stand the guy. And it's been that way for years."
The three Guzmans fell silent. Graham and Chancey thought, 'It's a pity that we just felt a bit guilty a moment ago.'
Graham was the first to snap, rage flaring up as he prepared to scold Quinlyn.
Yasin cut in before Graham could. With a smirk, he asked, "Did you finish him off?"
Quinlyn mumbled, "Probably not."
Yasin remarked, "What a Disappointment."
The three Guzmans thought they must be hearing things.
Quinlyn sighed, picked up an apple from the table, and took a crisp bite. "Yeah, I know. Pretty pathetic of me," she muttered, her tone dripping with self-deprecation.
The three Guzmans fell silent. They were convinced that Yasin was the one who corrupted Quinlyn, and they had every reason to believe so.
Evelyn glanced at Yasin, then turned to Quinlyn and said, "What kind of talk is this?" Instead of scolding further, she just sighed and continued, "You're still young, and sometimes you see things in extremes.
"But you have to believe that everyone in this family loves you. Your father knows a very well-respected doctor. Why don't you let him take a look at you?
"Maybe take some medicine, get some rest, go out and have some fun. Then you won't have these dark thoughts anymore. You're still young. You don't really understand how complicated the world can be.
"There are people out there with questionable tastes who like to lure inexperienced girls into making life-altering decisions, just to satisfy their own twisted desires."
For Quinlyn, this was probably the most sincere thing she'd ever heard from Evelyn since joining the Guzman family. By all rights, she should have been moved to tears. But she simply fixed her eyes on Evelyn.
As the sun climbed higher, a beam of light broke through between the three Guzmans, illuminating Quinlyn's eyes. Her brown pupils shone like glass marbles.
Quinlyn spoke softly, "Yesterday, you were uncomfortably warm toward me."
At Quinlyn's words, Evelyn's body went rigid. She instinctively averted her gaze from Quinlyn's piercing eyes.
Quinlyn's eyes were just too clear, as if they could see right through every secret.
The Guzman men weren't fools. They could tell something was off. They'd already been baffled by Evelyn's sudden warmth toward Quinlyn. In an instant, their expressions darkened.
The Guzman family may not be an industry leader, but in Albion, they were still one of the most prominent families. Every one of their children was raised like royalty.
Quinlyn, their only daughter, grew up away from home and had a strong-willed personality, but Graham believed they had treated her well since she returned.
But now, Evelyn's attitude was a glaring red flag. The Guzman men sensed that something was wrong. And it was a very serious problem.
Graham scowled, his face icy, "What the hell is going on here?"
Evelyn, pampered all her life, was instantly on the verge of tears at the sudden scolding. She stammered, "I don't know what's going on." She refused to admit her ulterior motives.
Hearing this, Graham felt utterly humiliated in front of outsiders.
Chancey turned to Quinlyn and asked sharply, "Is this what you wanted to see?"
Quinlyn almost laughed at that. She thought, 'Of course. He is Yalena's ever-loyal shield. Even now, he still believes I am the one to be blamed.'
Quinlyn couldn't be bothered to argue. She stood up with deliberate calm, her eyes sweeping over the three Guzmans. She said, "Are we done with this little trial? If so, I'm out."
Graham bellowed, "Stop right there. Don't you dare leave. Whatever the reason, I'll get to the bottom of this and make things right for you."
Quinlyn said, "Honestly, there's no reason. I just can't stand Yarden, that's all. The fact that I couldn't go through with killing him, guess I'm just pathetic."
Graham thought, 'That's not what I meant.'
But Quinlyn had no intention of arguing any further. She took a couple of steps, then turned back to look at the three of them and said, "You might want to seriously consider the issue of the shares.
"Otherwise, I have a feeling your days ahead will be just as chaotic as today."
Chancey frowned and stood up without hesitation, blocking Quinlyn's way. Fixing a stern gaze on Quinlyn, he demanded, "This isn't over yet. You've caused trouble between Mom and Dad, and now you're just going to walk away?"
Before Quinlyn could respond, Yasin, silent until now, stepped forward, blocking most of Quinlyn from view with his broad frame.
Though Yasin and Chancey were about the same height, Yasin's solid build easily dwarfed Chancey's.
Chancey said, "Mr. James, this is a family matter. Know your place."
Yasin's expression darkened. He let out a derisive chuckle, his eyes narrowing. He sneered, "Know my place? I know exactly where that is. After all, you're still standing here in one piece, aren't you?"
