It was a standoff between two equally formidable men, both with unshakable backing, neither willing to yield.
Both Chancey and Zachary were groomed as heir apparents.
Unlike Zachary, the pampered heir who grew up sheltered from the real world, Chancey was forged through early trials, cultivating a commanding presence that demanded respect.
But when facing Yasin, Chancey's usual commanding presence proved utterly useless; if anything, he found himself at a distinct disadvantage. He felt like a domesticated animal facing a wild beast.
Chancey ignored Yasin's provoking words and looked at Quinlyn. He said, "If this isn't resolved properly, don't count on getting the shares you want."
Realizing that appealing to emotions or reason was pointless, he cut straight to the chase and put the real stakes on the table.
Quinlyn finally deigned to glance his way, responding with a dismissive "Fine."
Chancey said bluntly, "Tell me what happened last night, and I'll let you go." He didn't care if his directness might hurt someone. He thought, 'All the girls in the world are delicate little vines, except Quinlyn.
'She's built differently, like some kind of mutant steel beam. Hurt her? Good luck with that.'
Quinlyn glanced around her room and said, "When I had some free time, I set up a security camera for myself. You know how it is. Kids from families like ours tend to develop certain trust issues." With that, she walked out ahead of Yasin.
Yasin watched as Quinlyn left, but remained still. He turned to Chancey and said, "Send me a copy of the security footage. My people will contact you shortly."
Chancey was about to snap, "This is Guzman family business."
Yasin let out a laugh, the insincerity in his smile completely unmasked. He said, "If the Guzman Group wants to stir up trouble, I'd be more than happy to oblige."
He didn't say "the Guzman family," but "the Guzman Group." The implication was crystal clear.
After that, Yasin followed Quinlyn out.
After Yasin left, Chancey hesitated briefly before telling his parents, "There seems to be a surveillance camera in Quinlyn's room. I'll go check."
Graham barely contained his anger as he turned to Evelyn and growled, "Enough with the cover-ups. I'll go see for myself what's going on."
Chancey said, "No need, I'll go check. You and Mom, please stop arguing. It's not a big deal. As long as Quinlyn's fine, that's what matters. She's still young; her personality can still be adjusted."
Although he said so, he thought, 'Adjust Quinlyn's personality? That'd be like expecting Godzilla to peacefully visit Earth for coffee. Not happening in this lifetime.'
Chancey grabbed the spare key and entered Quinlyn's room. His mild OCD made him frown involuntarily. After a quick scan of the room, he spotted the surveillance camera tucked away in the corner.
Quinlyn's words echoed in his mind. He thought, 'Is she really that insecure? To the point of installing surveillance in her own bedroom?'
He then found the surveillance computer hidden in a secluded corner. He wondered when Quinlyn had installed this entire surveillance system, but ten minutes later, his confusion didn't matter anymore.
Chancey rewound the surveillance footage to the previous night.
Everything appeared completely normal, just Beatrice and Evelyn stopping by, which only made Chancey's frown deepen. Then Yarden appeared.
Yarden's vile, stomach-churning words made Chancey almost unbearable to hear.
Then came Quinlyn's retaliation. Chancey found Quinlyn in the camera stood in stark contrast to the Quinlyn whose words alone could drive her whole family mad.
Then Chancey witnessed Quinlyn's methodical retaliation against Yarden. One pill every hour. And she followed through without fail.
After administering the medication, Quinlyn lay on the bed, staring vacantly at the ceiling, her gaze occasionally drifting to the wall clock.
Chancey's hand froze for a moment. Then, he hit fast-forward.
He noticed a pattern: after each time Quinlyn gave the medicine, she would always lie in the same spot, stare at the clock for a while, then return to that blank stare at the ceiling.
Chancey realized that Quinlyn truly hadn't slept a wink all night.
By seven o'clock, Quinlyn was still on her feet, looking remarkably alert and energetic.
Then that heated exchange played out.
Yarden snapped, "No matter what you do. The only one they'll ever love is Yalena. You think dragging me out and showing them the truth will make them feel sorry for you? Dream on."
Hearing this, Chancey instinctively took a step back. Cold sweat beaded on his forehead.
Then came the events of this morning. Chancey saw Beatrice's eyes light up with surprise as she opened the door. And then he saw Evelyn, her expression anything but innocent.
Finally, he saw Quinlyn deliberately lift her gaze and look straight into the surveillance camera.
Chancey's fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. At that moment, he was certain that Quinlyn had done this on purpose. She wanted him to see it all.
Her final gaze seemed to say, "Look, this is the truth you wanted. Happy now?"
As Yasin stepped outside, he spotted Quinlyn standing tall against the wind, her dress billowing around her like a blooming flower, a sight eerily reminiscent of their first encounter. He strode over to her.
Quinlyn looked up at him with a teasing glint in her eyes. She said, "You sure caught up fast."
Yasin nodded and joked, "You have no idea. I can teleport through space now."
Quinlyn let out a mock gasp and exclaimed, "Wow, you are amazing. I'm impressed, truly impressed."
Just then, an older woman returning from grocery shopping happened to walk past them.
"Awkward much?" Quinlyn asked.
Yasin stood ramrod straight, not a trace of embarrassment on his face. Grinning, he said, "As they say, if you're not embarrassed, it's everyone else who feels awkward."
Quinlyn was convinced that when it came to shamelessness, Yasin was in a league of his own. No ordinary person could even hope to compare.
It was clear Yasin had his agenda as the two of them got into the car and he drove off, taking Quinlyn farther and farther into places she no longer recognized.
Quinlyn glanced out the window at the unfamiliar scenery and asked, "So, exactly where are we headed?"
Yasin replied, "To sleep."
Quinlyn exclaimed, "You're going to sleep? In broad daylight?"
Yasin shot her a glance and teased, "You've got the same dark circles as that grocery-shopping auntie we just saw."
Quinlyn knew he was exaggerating, but she still reflexively glanced at her reflection. She said, "What dark circles? I used..." She trailed off, realizing she'd just given herself away.
An abrupt silence fell over the car. The lighthearted banter from just moments ago evaporated instantly.
Quinlyn snapped the visor mirror shut and slumped back into her seat. She opened her mouth as if to speak, but words failed her.
"Alright, get some proper sleep when we get there. After that, you and I need to have a real talk," Yasin said. As he spoke, his expression grew solemn, darkening like storm clouds gathering.
Quinlyn thought, 'Unlike those blind fools in the Guzman family, Yasin has eyes that see. Putting two and two together, he gets to know the truth. Yet the Guzmans remain willfully blind.'
After learning the whole story, Yasin thought, 'Yarden, well. Just wait.'
Quinlyn glanced nervously at the speedometer before speaking up, "Okay, I just have to say one thing. I don't want to end up on the news tomorrow. I'd like to live to see 100, you know."
"That's two things you are talking about," Yasin corrected her, though he gradually let off the gas.
