Half an hour later, at the Traffic Management Department, a traffic officer scolded, "How can you call yourself a guardian? If you want to drive, go get proper training at a driving school."
Yasin nodded, not saying anything.
The officer continued, "Don't think that just because you found a quiet spot, you can get away with practicing driving. The law leaves no room for loopholes, no exceptions."
Yasin said, "Yes, officer. I'll make sure to discipline her properly when we get home. I just looked away for a moment, and she was already sneaking into the driver's seat, wanting to give it a try.
"But how could she just casually experiment with something like that? I'll be sure to give her a thorough lesson on road safety."
His resolute declaration made Quinlyn steal more than one sideways glance at him, surprised by his sudden show of authority.
The traffic officer, frowning at Quinlyn's attitude, snapped, "Young lady, eyes front. What you did was extremely dangerous. Your guardian will also be held accountable."
Quinlyn was stunned.
Yasin chimed in at just the right moment, "Hey, the officer's talking to you. Why are you spacing out? What, you planning to spend a couple of nights in detention?"
Quinlyn immediately shot to her feet and bowed deeply. She said, "Officer, I'm sorry. This is honestly my first time, and I promise it'll be the last. Please, sir, could you let me off just this once?
"I was so scared I was about to cry. I swear, I meant no disrespect to the law at all. I just turned eighteen. I'm barely an adult. I didn't mean it."
In the end, Yasin was fined, his car impounded, and his license suspended. He was this close to being detained.
Outside the Traffic Management Department, Quinlyn looked up at the sky, then down to the ground, and finally at Yasin beside her. She thought, 'I'm not embarrassed at all. Yeah, right. As if.'
She never expected that instead of ending up in the ocean from reckless driving, she barely made it a few hundred meters before getting busted by a patrolling traffic cop.
She thought, 'Talk about being unlucky.'
Seeing that Quinlyn was drooping like a wilted flower, Yasin suppressed a grin as he tried to look serious. He said, "See? I told you, but you never listen. Now look at the mess you're in."
The two of them were still standing outside the Traffic Management Department. Yasin was putting on a perfect act as the stern elder, scolding Quinlyn with Oscar-worthy seriousness.
Quinlyn put on her best "I'm listening" face, then glanced up and muttered under her breath, "Alright, that's enough. You may not be grinning, but your eyebrows are practically dancing.
"If you can't hold it in and start laughing out loud, it's not going to look so dignified."
Yasin took the hint and kept quiet. Only after they'd walked a fair distance did he finally let himself go, breaking into a grin from ear to ear, a perfect example of what it meant to truly beam with joy.
"Come on, your laugh lines are showing," Quinlyn said coolly. She was the one who got busted. No matter how ridiculous it was, she couldn't find it funny.
Yasin finally managed to rein in his grin, but couldn't help pulling out his phone to search for anti-aging serums and quick-fix cosmetic treatments, just in case those laugh lines were starting to show.
Quinlyn thought, 'His extra antics are killing me.'
With Yasin's car impounded and even his driver's license revoked, Timothy had to come pick them up.
Timothy didn't understand the ins and outs of it. He just assumed this must be one of Yasin's quirks. He asked, "Where to, Mr. James?"
Yasin glanced at his watch and said, "Time to eat."
"Got it," Timothy responded, then started the car and drove off.
Timothy was driving a business van today and, being thoughtful, lowered the privacy partition to give Yasin and Quinlyn complete seclusion in the back seat.
But he overestimated them. In that confined private space, Yasin and Quinlyn merely exchanged a glance, which ended with Quinlyn giving Yasin a dramatic eye roll.
Timothy picked a rather upscale seafood boil restaurant.
The restaurant catered to high-end clientele, with private dining rooms for each table. The corridors were designed so one wouldn't see a single other guest. Privacy here was second to none.
Quinlyn didn't hold back. Starving enough to eat a horse, she went wild ordering practically the entire menu. Whether she could finish it all was the future problem.
Mid-meal, Yasin suddenly sent a photo to Quinlyn's phone. He said, "Take a look. This is your full tutoring schedule for the next month, all the way up until school starts."
Quinlyn blinked in confusion.
Yasin said, "Don't give me that look. You're about to take the SAT. Don't you think you should be studying? Better hurry up and eat. Your next session starts in two hours."
Quinlyn's expression turned incredulous. She exclaimed, "Wait, you're serious about this?"
Yasin said seriously, "Of course. This is your new normal until the SAT is over."
It was at this moment that Quinlyn finally realized that Yasin wasn't just messing around or teasing her. He was dead serious about going full guardian mode on her, monitoring her study.
After Yasin finished speaking, he immediately started demolishing the meat on the table. With that big frame of his, his appetite was no joke.
Quinlyn was stunned to realize that, while she was still processing everything, he'd already polished off more than half the meat. She shot him a furious look.
Yasin didn't even bother to look up as he picked up a slice of beef and popped it into his mouth. "I can see what's above my head," he said.
Quinlyn rolled her eyes. She said, "Seriously? All that fuss over a piece of meat?"
Yasin didn't respond. Instead, he simply placed a perfectly cooked slice of meat into Quinlyn's bowl. "So this thing above my head, you know what it means, don't you?" he asked casually between bites, his tone deceptively light.
Quinlyn paused slightly, still not quite used to such blunt conversation. She nodded, then shook her head. She said, "Honestly, I have no idea what's going on with you.
"Your title keeps evolving. You must've noticed you started as just a background character, and now you've leveled up all the way."
Yasin frowned and said, "Just a background character? With looks like mine, how could I just be an extra?"
Quinlyn rolled her eyes and thought, 'Is this the main point?' She cleared her throat and said, "You might be an anomaly, and the reason probably lies with you. Haven't you experienced anything unusual?"
She added inside, 'Like, maybe you're also someone who got a second chance at life, but your battery was running low when you came back.'
Yasin lifted his hand, examining it carefully. He seemed to have figured it out. Then he shot Quinlyn a sidelong glance and said, "End of Q&A time."
Quinlyn cursed inwardly, 'Damn it!'
Yasin continued, "We'll revisit this discussion after you finish the SAT and become a proper adult. I expect you'll return the favor with equal honesty by then. Eat up now. Tutoring session right after this."
Quinlyn couldn't be bothered to say anything more. Instead, she channeled her frustration into eating and demolished the remaining third of the food.
By the time she left the restaurant, she was holding her stomach, stuffed and satisfied.
As soon as Timothy saw the two of them come out, he glanced at Quinlyn before respectfully saying, "Mr. James, Ms. Guzman's brother just sent a message to your work phone."
Quinlyn frowned and asked, "Which brother of mine? Chancey? Since when are you two close enough to text each other?"
Yasin ruffled her hair and said, "Young lady, time for your tutoring session. Timothy, take her there." He was saying that he wouldn't be in the same car as her.
