Yancy watched as Yasin calmly took a seat right beside Quinlyn. Recalling the private tutoring session just now, a thought struck him. His expression darkened as he shot up and snapped, "You, on your feet."
Yasin blinked in surprise.
Yancy snapped, "My sister's only eighteen. She's still in school. I don't know what you're scheming, but you'd better drop those shady ideas right now. Or I swear, I'll make you pay for it.
"I've checked out the one-on-one tutor you found for her. Sure, the teacher is quite reputable, but money is no object. Name your price. I'll pay you off in full right now. And from now on, you stay the hell away from her."
Yasin rubbed his chin, shot Quinlyn a sidelong glance.
Quinlyn wished she knew. She couldn't figure out why Yancy was suddenly playing the overprotective brother card. To make matters worse, Yancy was making quite a scene, drawing curious stares from those around.
Yasin chuckled at him making such a fuss, and casually unlocked his phone. "Just finished the bill. Take a look," he said.
Yancy was completely thrown off by how fast the bill appeared. He'd just mentioned settling up, and now the invoice was already staring him in the face. His mind raced.
Yancy shot Quinlyn a pointed look, as if to say, "See? This is a blatant setup. If I hadn't come with you today, this bill would haunt you for life. He's clearly trying to 'PUA' you."
Quinlyn thought both Yancy and Yasin were crazy.
Yancy clicked his tongue dismissively as he glanced at Yasin's phone, thinking, 'Hah, how expensive could this so-called prestigious tutor possibly be? Even if the price is sky-high, it's nothing to the Guzman family.'
The next moment, Yancy was left speechless. He stared at the bill, counting the zeros in disbelief. He finally exploded, "This is daylight robbery."
His shout was so loud, it turned every head in the room. Quinlyn clapped her hands over her ears and sighed, "Yancy, could you keep it down? We're in public."
"No way," he kept yelling, though his voice had noticeably dropped. His hands trembled as he held Yasin's phone. "You... you're scamming us and trying to kidnap her. I-I'll sue you."
Yasin, clearly amused, took a bite of his crab stick and grinned. "Come on, see for yourself. Everything's clearly priced. No tricks, no funny business. What you see is what you get."
Yancy exploded, "No tricks my ass. What kind of tutoring costs millions?"
Yasin smirked, "The tutoring isn't pricey, but I am."
Both Yancy and Quinlyn were left speechless. Even Quinlyn had to tip her hat to Yasin's shamelessness. She snatched the phone from Yancy, eager to see just how astronomical this so-called bill really was.
Quinlyn thought, 'Hmm. The tutoring fees are a bit pricey, but still reasonable, especially since this teacher offers comprehensive lessons and works nonstop all day. When you break it down, there's actually no markup.
'Meal expenses. Fuel costs. Well, everything's itemized down to the last detail, but none of these are the real kicker.'
As her eyes landed on the final line, she froze. 'Yasin's personal appearance fee? Seriously?' She glimpsed the astronomical number and quickly did the math in her head. Out of all these expenses, Yasin alone took up about ninety percent.
"I calculated this based on my hourly rate. Alas. To make this bill more affordable, I've already slashed my hourly rate to the bone, you know." Yasin explained.
Quinlyn sighed and said, "How generous of you." When it came to shamelessness, she had to hand it to Yasin.
Yancy grounded his teeth and demanded, "What's your company called?"
Yasin hummed, "I haven't been here long—just establishing my business foothold."
"Hmph, I knew—" Yancy started, but Yasin slid a business card across the table, cutting him off. "Just a few companies, nothing big. Here, contact this person. I've been busy overseeing Quinlyn's studies lately, so I haven't really been handling much else."
Yancy, refusing to believe it, immediately dialed the number.
Quinlyn could literally watch as Yancy's face grew darker and more unpleasant by the second. "Must you pick on him like that?" Quinlyn muttered under her breath.
Yasin shrugged and said, "Hey, I'm not picking on him. I'm just teaching him a lesson. That's life 101, but I usually don't hand out free lectures."
Quinlyn thought, 'Yeah, right.' But Yasin didn't seem like his usual self today. Quinlyn found him to be unusually talkative. She shot him a sidelong glance. The more she looked, the more she noticed something off.
Though he wore a youthful blue shirt, his eyes were downcast, with faint dark circles beneath them, and every upward glance revealed a hint of impatience he tried to suppress.
Yet on the surface, he kept up that playful, teasing act, as if nothing were wrong. Quinlyn was about to say something when Yancy, sitting across from her, finished his call.
Yancy took a deep breath. In just a few minutes, he'd already sized up all the assets Yasin mentioned, even factored in the taxes in his head. He had to admit that Yasin wasn't wrong. This hourly rate was a steal. He clenched his fists.
His mind was racing. He decided to cover the expenses. But he couldn't tell Graham, Evelyn, or Chancey. All the money he'd saved over the years were nowhere near enough. After a minute of silence, he finally gritted out, "Fine. I'll pay."
Both Quinlyn and Yasin froze in shock.
Yancy gritted his teeth and continued, "But I want to do it in installments. I own property. It can't be sold right now, but I can mortgage it—"
Just as Yancy was about to start rambling again, Quinlyn raised her hand to cut him off. "What do you mean? Don't lose your dignity. If you sell yourself to him just for money, I'll seriously lose all respect for you."
Yancy was such a headache. Quinlyn sighed in exasperation, unlocked her phone, and pulled up her banking app. "Here, see this?"
Yancy mechanically counted the digits again. He stared at Quinlyn in disbelief. "Where did you get all this money? Did you get it through shady means?"
Quinlyn rubbed her temples in frustration. "Alright, you know I have money. It's clean. Class is starting soon, so if you're done here, scram. Don't mess with my studies."
Yancy was completely baffled, and after tutoring her all morning, there was no way he was leaving now. "Not a chance. Without me, how are you ever going to get enrolled?"
Quinlyn was speechless.
Yasin sat with his eyes downcast, looking unusually quiet. As his gaze drifted downward, he noticed Quinlyn's hand resting on her lap. It was bandaged. His eyes narrowed slightly.
He distinctly remembered that there hadn't been a single mark on her hand when they parted yesterday.
