Father bought twin ex-mercs as bodyguards.
My sister got the sharp, stoic younger one—he latched onto her like a shadow.
Me? Stuck with his brother. Deaf, toxin-ravaged, a shell of a man.
I kept him, though. Stayed up massaging his convulsing muscles, dragged him to docs, begged Dad not to send him back to be tortured.
Foolish, right?
Then Lab exploded. He ripped my gas mask off and watched me burn.
“Sylvie needs it more.”
Oh, so you DO know how to speak.
Woke up this morning—back to choosing day.
This time, I’m picking different.
Ever wonder what a broken man hides?
Yeah. Me too.
I stared at the two brothers, silent for a long while.
Sylvia bit her lip, glancing at me hesitantly: “Maybe... maybe I should take James, sis. You’re frail—you need someone strong like David.”
As she spoke, she inched toward James Holt, away from David.
The tall, burly David tensed instantly, a flicker of anxious in his eyes.
I stayed quiet, rebirth memories surging in my mind.
In my past life, after Sylvia and David had effectively chosen each other, I’d hesitated the same way.
Back then, Sylvia had also suddenly offered to let me have David, the taller and stronger brother.
Seeing her hesitant expression, I’d truly thought she was considering my well-being.
I was foolish enough to trust her kindness, so I refused firmly—unwilling to wrong my sister, and I pitied James.
That was my No.1 bad life decision.
Until the lab explosion. Sylvia had claimed she didn’t need the mask, yet let both guards take my only lifeline.
Her chosen David, with perfect biochemical training.
The antidote syringe in her bag.
But she’d feigned reluctance for a moment, then accepted.
It was always her way—calculating I’d never let others sacrifice for me, that I’d step back.
Securing her gain while keeping the “generous” reputation.
But this time, I said calmly: “Fine. I’ll take David.”
Sylvia’s face froze, clearly expecting me to refuse.
She wasn’t the only one stunned—the brothers jerked their heads up, eyes full of shock and confusion.
“Nonsense!” Father snapped at Sylvia. “You’re the Olsen heir. Your safety is primary. That good-for-nothing can’t even care for himself—how could he protect you?”
I curved my lips slightly.
So father knew exactly what James was.
This “choice” was just a formality.
But...
Sylvia’s tense shoulders relaxed. She was about to pretend to wipe tears when the silent James suddenly spoke:
“I can carry out the mission.”
I looked up sharply.
The man who hadn’t uttered a single word to me in five years—speaking normally now?
Meeting his weathered yet clear gaze, I knew for sure:
He’d come back with memories too.
So much for “I owe you.”
Reborn, his first fear was being assigned to me.
Too bad he didn’t know—I had no intention of choosing him this time.
