“Regarding combat ability, you may test me on the spot, sir.”
James went on.
I never doubted his skill.
After my death in the previous life, my spirit witnessed him single-handedly take on three armed attackers to save Sylvia, driving a combat knife precisely through their throats.
How ironic.
Back then, I’d trained tirelessly with guns, fearing father would send this “invalid” back to the army to be punished.
True enough, when he dropped the pretense, he subdued the special forces instructor in five seconds flat.
Father’s expression softened noticeably.
The tears in Sylvia’s eyes vanished instantly.
To be fair, James was better-looking than his brother. If not for the nerve toxin-induced hearing loss, Sylvia would’ve chosen him from the start.
“Very well, then James will stay with you. David, you’ll protect Anya.”
At the final arrangement, David glanced at me.
When his eyes fell on my paralyzed legs, disgust flickered clearly across his face.
David suddenly dropped to one knee: “I beg you, sir, let me return to the base.”
Father’s face darkened: “A six-figure salary isn’t enough to keep you? You’d rather go back to die?”
David turned his face away unapologetically, avoiding my crippled legs: “I’m not capable enough to guard the Young Lady.”
I smiled bitterly, lowering my eyes.
The old injury from saving Sylvia at twelve—forever a stain I couldn’t shake.
James had been so cold to me in the past life. No doubt he’d thought the same.
“David! How can you speak to Anya like that!” Sylvia hurried to hit his shoulder, her fingers trembling.
When David looked up, his eyes swam with intense emotion: “I came here for only one person.”
In the stunned silence, I let out a soft laugh.
Sylvia quickly pressed down her twitching lips, pretending to hit him again: “Don’t say such things! I won’t let you leave!”
“Why make it hard?” I ran a hand over my wheelchair’s armrest. “Sylvia, you can have both of them.”
Sylvia flushed: “Sis... what nonsense are you talking about?”
The Holt brothers were undeniably handsome. From the moment they’d entered the hall, Sylvia’s gaze had clung to them, unblinking.
Father hesitated: “Anya, you truly don’t want either?”
“No. Neither interests me.”
Both brothers turned to look at me.
Their eyes held clear doubt, as if questioning where I got the audacity to say that.
James’s gaze was particularly deep, mixed with unreadable emotions.
I didn’t care to dig deeper, let alone guess.
“Then what of your safety?”
“Guess there’s nothing to be done.” I admitted frankly.
Father looked visibly taken aback.
“In that case, father, send me to Uncle’s. He’s not short on security over there.”
In my past life, all my thoughts had centered on James.
I’d even missed the opportunity to claim my share of the family fortune.
Sylvia and I lived in worlds apart.
Father always said he loved us both equally, yet the shareholding documents only ever bore Sylvia’s and Uncle’s names.
Uncle had expanded overseas, multiplying the family assets. Sylvia’s annual dividends alone could buy an entire financial street.
While I’d had to beg the accountant just to buy James’s specific medicine.
To change my fate, I’d have to step into the game myself.
Uncle, who barely knew his niece, dismissed me with a minor department through his secretary.
I didn’t argue, focusing solely on my work.
The business acumen I’d never shown in my past life now surprised even myself.
After securing the toughest international deal, Uncle made an exception, inviting me to dinner and handing me charge of Asian operations.
With the group on the cusp of going public, even his preference for Sylvia couldn’t ignore my usefulness.
Gradually, in business circles, my reputation began to overshadow Sylvia’s title of “Olsen’ little princess.”
