I’m back at the old mansion when Sylvia cuts me off in the hallway.
“Hey, aren’t you being a little too showy lately?”
I lift an eyebrow.
“You’re everywhere these days, hitting up all those parties. Not trying to rain on your parade, but let’s be real—your little ‘success’ is probably just luck. What if you crash and burn? It’ll tank the Olsen name.”
“Besides, with your legs? The more you flaunt yourself, the less likely any guy’ll want you.”
She flicks a meaningful glance at James.
“Maybe lay off bugging Uncle. If you wanna check out parties, I’ll drag you along sometime.”
I snort.
“Jealous I’m stealing your spotlight?”
Her eyes widen.
“Sylvia, who do you think you are, telling me to dial it back? The real Olsen heir? The youngest board member?”
“You’ve been the golden child your whole life, coasting on handouts. Where do you get the gall to tell me to play nice?”
“Anya, how could you—”
Tears instantly fill her eyes.
I cut off her act cold.
“Since we’re on the topic of my legs, why don’t we chat about that ‘accident’ when we were twelve?”
“I practically threw myself in front of that car to save you. Who was it that yanked me at the last second, slamming me right under the tires?”
Sylvia stumbles back, her trembling fingers flying to her lips.
“Save the drama. You’re not the one stuck with a lifetime of this.”
“Enjoy being Daddy’s little princess.”
I spin my chair to leave, but she suddenly drops to the floor, tears spilling as she looked up at me.
“It’s not like that, Anya... God, I was so scared...”
“How could you think I’m that evil...”
Her tears plop onto the marble floor.
“Enough!”
David lunges forward, yanking her into his arms.
“Miss Olsen, that’s low—even for you.”
Sylvia clings to his sleeve, voice wobbling through sobs.
“Don’t... it’s okay... really...”
Her whole body shakes.
James’s eyes flicker with sympathy. He turns to me, dead serious.
“You should apologize.”
I almost laugh. But he just stands there, waiting.
Slap!
Sylvia shrieks, diving in front of him.
“Anya! How could you hit him?!”
I rub my stinging palm.
“Sylvia, for the love of god, teach your pets some manners. They’re just two barking dogs we pay to keep around. Who do they think they are, talking to me like that?”
“You—”
David’s fists clench, knuckles popping.
James touches his red cheek, staring at me like he’s never seen me before.
I wheel away, no room for their arguments.
Planned to pack up and move near the office, far from these nutjobs. But next morning, my bedroom door’s banging like crazy.
David busts in without a knock, yanking me out of bed before I can blink.
“Sylvie’s been kidnapped! You’re coming with me—now!”
I grab the gun from my wheelchair’s hidden compartment, jamming the cold barrel to his temple.
“Touch me again and find out what happens.”
“Besides, why the hell do I care if she’s gone?”
“How dare you play innocent!”
David’s eyes are bloodshot, like he hasn’t slept.
“If you hadn’t spewed all that crap yesterday, would Sylvie have snuck out driving at midnight?”
“The kidnappers want you to trade places. This is your chance to fix it.”
