The door burst open. James charged in, his face drained of color.
He glanced up at the second floor. “Find Sylvie yet?”
David grabbed me by the collar. “The kidnappers agreed to a s”
“Since you started this mess, you’re the one who’s gotta fix it.”
“You’re asking for it!”
I swung the gun butt back at his face. A gash split his temple, blood oozing.
“You’re just a bodyguard—who the hell do you think you are, laying hands on me? Does Dad know you’re calling your master ‘Sylvie’?”
David reeled, dazed, but his gaze turned colder. “Sorry, Miss Olsen, but this isn’t up to you.”
“For Sylvie, we’ll take whatever punishment comes.”
He twisted my wrist behind my back, snarling, “James! Hold her down!”
I could hold my own against David with a gun. But James? No chance.
A loud crash—I was slammed into the wheelchair. James’s combat boots filled my vision.
I thrashed, but two strong men’s grips pinned me down. I looked up at James, a last spark of hope in my eyes. “James... don’t do this... you said you owed me...”
His Adam’s apple bobbed. But he just looked away.
“Sorry.”
Click. The sound of the gun’s magazine being yanked out. I was fully restrained.
James guarded me alone during the ride.
“You’re reborn too,” he said suddenly.
I sneered. “And you’re still just as cruel to me.”
He fell silent, then spoke hoarsely. “I owe you.”
Slap!
I smacked him hard across the face.
“Two lifetimes, and your apologies are still this cheap.”
He turned his head, hair falling to hide his expression.
“I swear—this ends here.”
He grabbed my wrist, grip tight enough to hurt.
“We’ll trade you for her this time. After that, I’ll keep you safe. Even if it kills me.”
I scoffed, looking away.
His knuckles whitened as he pressed harder. “It’s just a show for them. You won’t get hurt. I promise.”
The exchange was at an abandoned dock.
The second I passed Sylvia, she stumbled forward. “James! David!”
I spun around.
James was first to move, catching her solid. David sliced the rope on her wrists.
James held her so tight, his fingers trembled. I could read his lips: “My fault... you suffered...”
A strange, dull ache hit my chest. I’d told myself not to hope. Really, I had.
Rough rope bit into my skin, jolting me. Before I could cry out, cold tape sealed my mouth.
Seventy-two hours in this dark, damp basement. Not an inch of me was unmarked—burns from the iron crisscrossed my skin.
The kidnapper leader kicked over a bucket. “Aren’t you Gavin Olsen’s oldest daughter? Why’s no one come to negotiate? Are you even a Olsen, for Christ’s sake?”
I tugged at my bleeding lip.
The Olsens only recognized one daughter. And it sure as hell wasn’t me.
“Last chance,” he said, waving a syringe. “This stuff cranks your nerves’ sensitivity from one to ten. Call your family.”
“Pay up, and you suffer less.”
“Refuse...” He hefted a scalpel, grinning darkly. “We’ll start with your useless legs. Send ’em to your daddy as a gift.”
