"Wait! No—"
The needle pricked my skin, and my muscles seized in spasms.
"Dial!"
A cold phone was shoved into my bloodied palm.
Contacts scrolled by. Father and Uncle’s numbers rang unanswered. Sylvia’s went straight to voicemail.
Finally, my finger hovered over James’s name—
"Hello?"
"James!" My voice was raw, barely recognizable. "Bring the ransom! They drugged me—they’re gonna chop off my legs!"
Violin music drifted from the other end.
I froze. "Where... are you?"
"Miss Olsen, tonight’s Sylvie’s party. Celebrating her safe return. Don’t be such a buzzkill."
My blood turned to ice. "What did you say?"
"Hold on one more night. I’ll come get you tomorrow."
The kidnappers snickered.
My teeth chattered. "You promised you’d keep me safe..."
After a long silence, he said softly, "Don’t be childish."
The line went dead.
"James! Wait!!"
I redialed, only to hear the automated shutdown message.
The leader grinned suddenly.
"Uh, we still doing this, boss?"
I wiped away fake tears, standing slowly. The fear vanished, replaced by icy calm.
"Call it off. Untie me."
The thugs’ expressions shifted instantly, bowing to undo my restraints.
"Apologies, Miss Olsen."
I tossed bloodstained bandages into the fire pit, barking without looking back: "Burn everything. Leave nothing."
In the wind, I watched the fake cell collapse in flames. An assistant handed me wipes to erase the painted scars.
A tall figure stepped from the shadows, half his face hidden by burn scars.
"From tonight," I said, boarding the deck as wind whipped my coat, "Anya Olsen is dead."
In her place stood the ghost that would burn the Olsen family to ash.
James couldn’t settle at the party. That desperate voice on the phone kept replaying in his head.
Watching his brother laugh with Sylvia, he slipped out to the garden. His hand shook as he hit redial.
"The number you are dialing is unavailable..."
A vise clamped down on his chest. He tried again—same cold tone.
Her cries echoed: "They’ll chop my legs off!"
"You promised..."
But tonight was Sylvie’s night. She’d shyly asked him to lead the first dance...
James clutched his phone, dialing his assistant: "Get eight million in cash. Now. Meet me at the docks."
"James?"
Soft footsteps behind him. He turned to find Sylvia in a moonlit gown, glowing under the trellis.
"Hiding out here alone?" She drifted closer, her fingers brushing lightly over the medal on his chest. "Worried about my sister?"
James tensed. "Miss Olsen is—"
"Relax." She tiptoed to whisper in his ear, Sylvia perfume clouding his senses. "When I was there, those kidnappers doted on me. Fussed over me like I was a queen."
She spun, twirling her skirt.
"Do I look like I was mistreated?"
Her hand slid down his arm.
"They won’t hurt Anya without the money. She’s always loved her little dramas—just craving your attention, that’s all."
James frowned. "But—"
"Shhhh."
She pressed a finger to his lips.
"You promised to be my dance partner. We’ll fetch Anya tomorrow, together."
Her body pressed against his.
"You wouldn’t break a promise, would you?"
The sickly sweet scent fogged his mind; his arms tightened around her.
A phone rang, shattering the moment.
He answered, irritation edging his voice: "Hold off on the ransom...what?"
"What did you say?!"
The phone slipped, then he caught it. Sylvia yelped as James tore himself away from her and bolted, not looking back.
