The sky blazed half red with towering flames. Rescue boats cut through the churning waves.
“The dock’s surrounded by sea on three sides—only escape is jumping in!”
“Let me go!”
James lunged madly for the seawall, held back by four or five bodyguards straining to restrain him. But a former special forces soldier isn’t so easily held back. Just as he was about to leap, a fist smashed into his cheekbone.
“Snap out of it!”
David’s knuckles whitened, voice trembling.
“That woman’s got more tricks than a fox—this could be her trap!”
“What are you talking about...” James staggered, gripping the railing.
His brother hauled him up by the collar, spinning lies faster: “No body, no sign of her—even the kidnappers vanished into thin air!”
“You jump now, you’re playing right into her hands!”
“She’s just dying to see you lose your mind over her!”
James’s lips twitched. A low, bitter laugh escaped him.
“Right... she’s alive... she has to be...” He swayed to his feet, eyes a sickly red. “She’s too smart to die...”
“Found the victim!” A shout cut through the chaos.
James froze, whirling around. The black body bag on the stretcher shattered his composure entirely.
“James, don’t!”
David tried to block him, but James bowled him over.
“Wait! Don’t look!”
The bag’s zipper was already pulled down. The charred body was unrecognizable, but the build... it matched...
His gaze dropped, and suddenly he went rigid—
“Where are her legs?!”
He grabbed a paramedic, voice rasping, terrifying.
The medic stumbled back, intimidated by his feral expression.
“James, calm down! They’re just here to recover remains!”
David locked his arms around his brother from behind.
But James was beyond reason: “Where are her legs?! Give them back!”
“James!” David roared, his voice shaking the glass. Seeing his brother teetering on collapse, he softened: “Let’s go home... we’ll talk there...”
It was a terrible mistake.
No sooner had they stepped into the villa than the butler held out a package, hands shaking. David’s breath hitched as he tore it open—
Inside lay two blackened, mangled stumps—plain as day.
“Agh—!”
Sylvia was suddenly slammed against the floor-to-ceiling window, a vice-like grip around her throat. David froze, then lunged to pry his brother off: “What are you doing?! It’s Sylvie!”
James didn’t hear him. “You knew, didn’t you? What’s your connection to those kidnappers?”
“Didn’t you say they treated you well?”
“Then what the hell are these?! Why did they h-hurt her?!”
Sylvia’s face turned blue, fingers scrabbling uselessly at the glass.
“N-no... it wasn’t me...”
“James!” David drove an elbow into his brother’s ribs. While James reeled, he pulled Sylvia behind him.
“Sylvie’s got nothing to do with this! If anyone’s faking, it’s Anya Olsen!”
James let out a broken laugh.
“Anya begged me to save her... I didn’t...”
He pointed to Sylvia, his hand shaking.
“If she hadn’t lied, I never would’ve called it off.”
“Sylvia Olsen.”
He said her full name for the first time.
“Last chance. What’s your real link to those kidnappers?”
