My alliance with Ronan began when I was sent to Uncle’s.
The Quinns and Olsens had been centuries-old rivals. Back then, the Olsens tricked the Quinns into bankruptcy—Ronan’s parents jumped to their deaths, and the rest of his kin fled abroad.
Yet Ronan took me in, a daughter of his enemies.
He needed a marriage to claim the family trust, to fend off greedy relatives. But his scarred face and brooding nature made him a pariah.
I needed a strong ally against a father who’d sooner cast me aside, against the whole Olsen clan. Later, events proved I’d been wise to prepare.
Two broken outcasts—bound by necessity.
Once my legs healed, I started showing up at social events. Before, I’d hidden in a wheelchair, covering my crippled legs with a blanket. I was so self-abase that I almost forgotten what I’d once looked like.
Ronan didn’t care. He strode into high-society galas with his scars, ignoring the whispers—“Such a pretty girl, why pick him?”
It took me ages to notice: every time I walked in with Ronan, a figure lingered in the shadows, watching.
Tonight, I’d had too much to drink. Stumbling on the terrace, a hand caught me from behind.
“Miss Olsen sure is ruthless with her own blood.”
That voice—
I froze, sober in an instant.
“James.”
He wore a tailored suit, polished, no trace of the rough bodyguard. Fitted right in at this fancy party.
“Who let you in here?”
“I’m Sylvia’s special assistant now.” His eyes were dark. “Naturally, I’m here to get justice for her.”
My nails dug into my palm.
The Olsens were crumbling—their trust fund collapsing, Sylvia’s lavish life hanging by a thread. She might even face huge fines.
No wonder their stock had stopped plummeting. My well-oiled revenge had hit a wall—because of James.
“Why do you keep getting in my way?!”
“I never wanted to be your enemy.”
He stepped closer, trapping me between the railing and himself.
“If I hadn’t used helping her as an excuse, I couldn’t have used the Olsen connections to find you.”
A cool finger brushed my cheek.
“Miss Olsen—you’re brighter than I imagined. Do you know how many countries I searched to find you?”
I slapped his hand away, leaving a red mark on his wrist.
He laughed, a feverish light in his eyes.
“You’re real... you’re alive... I knew it...”
“Anya,” he suddenly grabbed my wrist, “come back with me.”
“Get off!” I wrenched free, kicking his knee. “Why can’t you let me stay ‘dead’? Why ruin this for me?!”
His pupils shrank—there were tears in his eyes.
“Do you think I haven’t known that despair? For six months, every night I dreamed of you burning in that fire!”
He planted his hands on either side of my head, caging me in. “Without you, I learned what it means to be a ghost.
“I stood in the lab ruins and swore—if I got a second chance, I’d let myself be torn to pieces to keep you safe.
“I tried to shoot myself three times. David stopped me every time.”
“Then I noticed someone was targeting the Olsen core businesses—moves just like the ones you used to pull—”
His voice grew hoarse, his thumb brushing my healed scars.
“Anya, I don’t care about the Olsens. I just want to stand by you.”
“Oh, is that right?”I leaned up, whispering in his ear. “Too bad.”
“The time when you deserved my everything—died with my last life, forever.
“I don’t love you. Haven’t for a long time.”
He went rigid.
“Force me, and I’ll kill myself right in front of you. Let THAT image haunt you forever.”
Watching his face crumple, I smiled and pushed past him, walking away.
