Back in the ballroom, a handkerchief appeared before me.
I looked up, meeting Ronan’s dark eyes.
“Took you long enough to sober up?”
Surprised, I took it.
“Didn’t expect Mr. Quinn to come fetch me personally.”
“Don’t flatter yourself,” he sneered. “Just curious who’s worthy of keeping my partner waiting.”
I smiled. “Nothing gets past you, Mr. Quinn.”
“Miss Olsen.” He suddenly gripped my chin. “My rule is absolute loyalty during the partnership. Otherwise...”
Since the accounting incident, his wariness of me had grown. But I couldn’t very well say I’d checked the books because I distrusted him too—that would shatter our fragile alliance.
I pressed a finger to his lips.
“I promise—whoever I saw, it’s not your business rival.”
He narrowed his eyes, but let it drop.
I never could fathom James’s plan. He vanished from my sight, stopped meddling with my schemes. The Olsens’ end was sealed.
The day Ronan’s company was to finalize the acquisition, I was meant to attend the signing.
Our deal was: he’d help me claim my inheritance; I’d help him swallow the Olsens.
But the second I stepped outside, I blacked out.
When I woke, I was in a strange island villa. Delicate manacles bound my limbs.
“Gotta keep you tied up for a bit,” a familiar voice said from the dark.
“James!” Shock gave way to fury. “You motherfu— Untie me, NOW!”
He sat on the bed’s edge, fingers brushing my hair.
“Can’t. You said you’d die if I took you. Even if you might break that promise, I can’t risk it.”
“This is false imprisonment!”
“Sure is,” he chuckled. “That’s why I bought the whole island. We’ll be together forever.”
Chills ran through me.
“Are you insane?”
He leaned over me.
“Six months, seven continents—just to find the perfect cage.”
“Isolated, nice climate—fits your taste.”
“Anya, you can hate me forever. We’ve got all the time.”
“Once you stop wanting to run, I’ll set you free. Naturally.”
He traced my features, obsessed. “Even caging you, I’ll give you the world.”
I squeezed my eyes shut.
He suddenly laughed. “Waiting for Ronan Quinn?”
“Too bad—today’s his big day to swallow the Olsens.”
My nails dug into my palm. He was right.
Ronan and I were just allies of convenience. This was the payoff. What little rapport we had—hardly friendship—wouldn’t make him give up a billion-dollar takeover.
Besides, with James’s tricks, even if Ronan tried, he’d never find this island.
“Anya...” His nose brushed mine. “Have my child. I want to see what you looked like as a kid.”
“Then neither of us can escape.”
“Get off!” Tears spilled down my cheeks. “Let me go!”
His lips were inches from mine when a shrill alarm blared.
James shot up, glanced at the monitor, then snorted and drew his gun.
“Quinn actually dared to come die?”
“Ronan?” I froze.
He chambered a round. “Looks like some blood’s gonna soak this island.”
“No! James!” I thrashed, but could only watch him head for the door.
In panic, my eyes locked on the letter opener by the bed. With all my strength, I turned my head and bit down on the blade.
