Maybe I answered too fast—Greta just stared at me, her eyes narrowing with suspicion. "You're lying, aren't you? You've made promises like this before, only to take them back the next day."
Phillip shot me a withering look, his voice dripping with disapproval. "Blanca, I've had it with you. Greta's just a kid. She needs time to rest, to actually live—not be shackled to her desk all day. Look at her! She's already showing signs of depression, and she's barely out of elementary school!"
Rose, never one to miss an opportunity to stir the pot, jumped in. "Blanca's the problem. If she keeps pushing Greta like this, that girl's going to crack. She used to be so cheerful, and now she bursts into tears over nothing. Honestly, I'm thinking of taking a leave from work just to get her to a therapist."
Frank let out a cold scoff. "A therapist? Blanca's the one who needs help. She's the reason everything's falling apart. I still can't believe we ended up with her in this family."
Watching them gang up on me, I couldn't help but laugh bitterly. "Wow. I haven't even said anything yet, and you're all ready to crucify me."
Rose pulled Greta protectively behind her, glaring at me like I was the enemy. "Oh, I know how you operate. You say you'll let her rest, then turn around and pile on more work. How many times have you gone back on your word? Too many to count!"
Ignoring her, I turned to Greta. "Anything else you want?"
Her lower lip jutted out in defiance. "No more tutoring on weekends. I just want to sleep in. And no more phone restrictions—I'll use it whenever I want, for as long as I want."
"Deal," I said without hesitation.
A spark of triumph lit up Greta's eyes, and she immediately printed out a contract. "Words don't mean anything. Sign this, so you can't back out later."
Phillip, ever the strategist, reminded her, "Make two copies. Just in case she tries to pull something."
I picked up the pen. Rose and Frank watched me like vultures circling prey, practically salivating at the thought of my defeat.
I signed without hesitation. Finally, I'd be free of this ungrateful child—and part of me was relieved.
When I was pregnant, the doctor warned me about the risks—poor sperm quality, high chance of complications. I quit my job, stayed in bed for six months just to keep her. And what did I get? A daughter who was weaker, slower than her peers. Without my relentless effort, she would've fallen hopelessly behind. Yet thanks to her grandparents' constant coddling, she grew up convinced she was some kind of prodigy.
In my past life, I sacrificed everything—my career, my sanity—to drag her through school. Tutors, customized study plans, late nights drilling equations into her head. And it worked. She got into a top university, landed a prestigious job.
Then, with her first paycheck, she bought gifts for everyone—except me.
When I asked why, she looked at me with pure disdain. "You don't deserve anything from me."
Later, she took the whole family on vacation—and left me behind. A fire broke out in the house. Old wiring. I burned alive.
As my spirit hovered above my charred body, I watched Greta stare at the ashes. The first words out of her mouth?
"Serves you right. You did this to yourself."
That was the moment I let go.
Now, staring at the signed contract, I fought back a smile.
"I hope you won't regret this."
