Greta took my words as a final act of rebellion. She scoffed, carefully tucking the agreement into her little safe like it was some prized possession. "I won't regret this. Without you meddling in my life, I'll be freer. Happier, even."
She tossed her school uniform aside without a care, flopped onto the bed, and grabbed her tablet, already tapping away at some game. "Get online. I'm playing all night—no one's stopping me today." She shot me this smug look, like she was daring me to say something, to try and control her like I used to.
Greta had astigmatism from birth, and by second grade, her vision had already worsened to 400 degrees. I'd spent thousands on corrective lenses, strictly limiting her screen time to protect her eyes. But Rose thought I was being ridiculous. "You really think a phone's gonna blind her? That's insane." She even handed Greta another phone, saying loud enough for me to hear, "Here, sweetie. Brand-new. Play as much as you want. Nobody's gonna stop you."
A few months ago, that would've sent me into a rage. Now? I couldn't care less.
Greta's words lit a fire under me. Instead of pushing her, I'd push myself.
In my past life, I'd given up my career for her—turned down offers from top companies just to hover over her schoolwork and daily life. Not this time. This time, I was writing my own story.
When my best friend, Nora Evans, heard I was job hunting, she practically cheered. "Blanca, it's about damn time. Why waste your youth on people who don't appreciate you?" Even she saw what I'd been blind to for years.
We made plans to meet for dinner. Before eight even hit, my phone buzzed—Rose's name flashing on the screen. The second I answered, her shrill voice blasted through. "Where the hell are you? We're starving!"
I sliced into my steak, taking my time. "And that's my problem because…?"
Rose snapped back automatically, "You always cook for us!"
I shrugged, even though she couldn't see it. "You've got two working hands. Figure it out. You came here to 'help' with the kid and chores, remember? If you can't handle it, pack up and go back to the countryside with Frank." I hung up before she could retort, turning back to Nora to discuss my new job.
Luckily, with my experience, the company moved fast—offering me a position at $12K a month with weekends off. Signing that contract felt like shedding chains I didn't even know I was carrying. For the first time in forever, I breathed easy.
I'd spent so long obsessing over Greta's grades, over keeping the household running, that I'd forgotten to live for myself.
Being with Nora? It was like waking up.
When I got home later, the place was a disaster. Phillip sat stiffly on the couch, and the second I walked in, his icy glare hit me like a slap.
