Phillip's anger flared as he took in Greta's defiance. His jaw tightened, frustration and disappointment warring in his glare. "Greta," he muttered through gritted teeth, "come apologize to your mom, and we'll drop this."
Greta's eyes darted to me, a flicker of panic flashing before she shoved her gaming console under her pillow. "What's the big deal? Mom signed an agreement. You can't just back out now!"
Rose jumped in, her voice dripping with fake concern. "Sweetheart, don't make your mom mad. You've been gaming all day—your poor eyes must be exhausted. Just put it down before she really loses it."
Even Frank piped up, rubbing his temples like he actually cared. "Listen to them, Greta. Your mom's not going to abandon you." (Though honestly, I knew the real reason—her nonstop button-mashing was giving him a headache.)
They all knew better, but none of them wanted to be the villain when it came to reining Greta in.
Watching them gang up on her, Greta's face twisted with betrayal. In a flash, her rebellious streak took over. Bang! She slammed the door shut and locked it.
From the other side, her voice rang out, defiant. "I'm not stopping! Try and make me!"
Rose shot me a sideways glance, practically salivating for me to explode like I used to—to scream, to fight, to give her the drama she craved.
Instead, I just smiled and hooked the charger onto the doorknob. "You know what? The experts say kids your age need playtime. Here's the charger. When that thing dies, come get it yourself."
I turned away, catching Phillip and the others shifting uncomfortably. Too bad. They'd made their bed—now they could lie in it.
Two weeks later, Greta's midterm grades came in. No surprise—they'd tanked.
She'd once been borderline for that elite middle school. Now? Not even close.
Phillip made sure to "accidentally" forward me the report card. Rose couldn't resist murmuring about Greta's "shocking decline."
They were all waiting—praying—for me to snap first, to rip up that agreement in a rage.
Joke's on them.
