When Greta's grades came out, the first call I got wasn't from her teacher—it was Phillip. His voice was dripping with false sweetness. "Honey, I know I messed up. From now on, I'll help you keep Greta in line. Just quit your job and focus on her, okay?"
After over a decade of marriage, I could predict his script before he even finished his first sentence.
Phillip plowed on, "Greta's already been punished enough. You're her mother—how can you stand by and watch her throw her future away? I swear she won't screw up again. The teacher called me today. She ranked 400th this time. Forget a top-tier middle school—she won't even get into a private one. She's dead last in her class."
He sighed dramatically. "Maybe the teacher was too hard on her. When she got home, she locked herself in her room and wouldn't come out, not even when my mom begged her. She only slunk out to grab a bite at dinner. If this keeps up, she's done for."
His voice oozed sincerity, like he was bending over backward to sound humble.
But I wasn't buying it. "What's the big deal? You know Greta. Hand her a game controller, and she'll bounce back in two days."
When he realized guilt-tripping wasn't working, he switched to bargaining. "Honey, I said I'm sorry. Just come home. Is it the money? Fine—I'll give you an extra thousand a month for personal spending if you quit and take care of her."
There it was—the old controlling tone, like he was doing me a favor by dictating my life. But this job was my ticket to freedom, and I wasn't about to surrender it. "Oh, Phillip, you make it sound so simple. Tell you what—how about I pay you three grand a month to quit and be Greta's full-time babysitter?"
That struck a nerve. His fragile masculinity shattered on the spot. "Don't push it! No self-respecting man stays home to play nanny!" He slammed the phone down, seething.
To him, it was perfectly logical for me to sacrifice my career—but the second the tables turned, it was an insult.
And that, right there, was the world's idea of fairness—the kind that only ever flows one way.
