Phillip signed the divorce papers under pressure, still stubbornly believing he could control me through Greta. Little did he know, I was thrilled to walk away from custody of that nightmare child.
The moment the divorce was final, I felt like I could breathe again. I immediately requested a transfer to our regional office. Just as I was finishing my handover, my phone rang.
"Mom!" Greta's hysterical voice screeched through the receiver. "My eyes! They hurt so bad I can't see! Help me, please!"
At 5:54 AM, Rose called me in tears. Apparently Greta had been gaming until midnight every night with zero supervision. Her already poor eyesight had deteriorated beyond repair.
Frank jumped on the line, furious: "That worthless stepmom of hers lets her glue herself to that damn tablet 24/7! We tried to take her to the ER and the bitch threw a tantrum!"
Rose begged between sobs, "Blanca, you have to come back. Phillip will treat you right this time, I promise."
"Not a chance in hell," I said without hesitation. "I'm done being your family's punching bag."
The day before my move, Phillip somehow tracked me down. Through the peephole, I watched him blubbering on my doorstep, Greta lurking behind him with coke-bottle glasses.
"Blanca, please!" he wailed. "Greta barely scored 100 on her finals! No school will take her! She's going blind but still gaming nonstop! We need you—I was wrong!"
Turns out Greta had flunked spectacularly while Phillip burned through favors trying to get her into any private school. Meanwhile, she'd gamed her way to legal blindness.
Last I'd seen her, I'd warned her to be grateful her stepmom hadn't given her a sibling. Instead, she'd tormented the poor woman daily—even kicked her down the stairs, causing a miscarriage. The stepmom wisely fled in the night.
Now Greta was Phillip's personal hell, and watching his downfall brought me pure joy. Karma's a bitch.
"Better get life insurance, Phillip," I called through the door. "Before your little arsonist burns your house down for the payout." I walked away to their screaming protests.
But my first morning in the new city, Nora texted me a news headline: [13-Year-Old Sets Family Home Ablaze in Insurance Fraud Scheme.]
Some things never change.
