Melinda learned the truth from one of her husband's most trusted confidants.
To think William still hadn't gotten over that woman, and now he'd even brought her bastard child into our home, Melinda was going crazy.
Melinda thought bitterly, 'And what about me? Where does that leave me? What am I supposed to do?
'After marrying William, we barely spent any time together. Now I'm past my prime, with nothing to show for it, while he's out there raising his ex's child. How ridiculous.
'I love my husband more than anyone else ever could.
'I'd do anything for him.
'But William doesn't love me.
'Our marriage is merely a business arrangement between two powerful families, devoid of any real affection.
'I won't take this lying down!'
'How am I any less than that bitch?'
'With the mighty Colon family backing me, my status, my power, my influence, what could that bitch possibly have over me?
'If I just destroy the only bond between him and that bitch, which is their child, then his heart would finally return to me.'
Melinda had always clung to this belief.
But that was just her own wishful thinking.
Ever since William believed the child was dead and that his lover disappeared, he grew even colder toward Melinda, rarely coming home and deliberately avoiding her.
'I hate that woman who ruined our marriage,' Melinda seethed inwardly.
So she locked the child away in the basement, keeping her imprisoned like a criminal.
Melinda thought viciously, 'I'll make her suffer every single day.
'She's nothing but a demon. All of this is that bitch's fault.'
"Melinda, dear, as his mother I know my son best. He's a man of great loyalty, he won't forget all the good you've done for him," Sally went on, praising her son.
The Boone and Colon families, both prominent clans, formed a marriage alliance that proved mutually beneficial.
Back then, William had refused to marry Melinda. It was only when his mother threatened suicide that he finally ended his ill-fated relationship with Ivanna and agreed to marry Melinda.
But after all these years of marriage, Melinda still showed no signs of pregnancy.
Sally was still counting on Melinda to produce an heir for the Boone family.
Growing increasingly anxious, she would drop by to check on Melinda every few days.
Today, Sally had also asked William to come home. He would be arriving soon.
Sally wanted the young couple to spend some time together so they could hurry up and give her a grandchild.
Melinda said, "Don't worry, Mom. I've been taking good care of myself, and I'm sure it won't be long before I get pregnant."
Melinda thought bitterly, 'With William never coming home, how am I supposed to get pregnant?'
Just as the two women were deep in conversation, William returned.
Melinda was elated. With a glance at Sally, she immediately realized that it must be Sally who had summoned William home.
"Mom, you should've told me you were coming back. I would've come to pick you up. I'm worried about you coming home alone," William said while looking at his mother.
He knew his mother had summoned him home to mend his relationship with Melinda.
Sally beamed from ear to ear. "I'm not that old yet. Besides, I've got bodyguards with me. Don't worry."
Melinda managed a smile. "You must be hungry. I've asked the kitchen to prepare some dishes, they'll be ready soon."
Sally immediately gave William's arm a gentle tug and beamed, "Wonderful! I'll love anything Melinda prepares."
William remained unmoved, his calm gaze fixed on the Melinda.
He thought, 'Beneath her gentle facade lurks a venomous and twisted soul.
'Back when I was forced into marriage, I never wanted it. My heart has always belonged to Ivanna.'
But the Boone family objected. His mother went behind his back and coerced Ivanna into leaving him.
After Ivanna left, Sally threatened him with her own life, demanding that he marry Melinda.
Sally threatened to slit her wrists if he refused to marry Melinda.
Left with no other choice, William reluctantly agreed to the loveless marriage arrangement.
When they married, he had told Melinda she didn't have to marry him. She was free to find her own happiness.
But Melinda took the pretense to heart and genuinely fell for him.
Sally gave William's arm another gentle tug.
William took the cue and said, "Alright, I could use a bite to eat."
Melinda's heart swelled with joy at his unusually gentle words.
'He's never been this gentle with me before... Could it be he's finally accepting me?' Melinda wondered, her heart fluttering between hope and doubt.
Soon, the staff served lunch at the table.
At the table, Melinda barely touched her own food, busily serving dishes to Sally and William instead.
"This fish is your favorite. Try it and see how it tastes," Melinda said gently.
Seeing her dutiful daughter-in-law, Sally beamed with delight and said warmly, "Don't spoil him so much! You've been so busy serving us, now make sure you eat something yourself."
"Yes, Mom," Melinda replied gently, taking her seat to eat.
"Does it taste good? Is it to your liking?" Melinda asked tenderly.
William gave a slight nod and responded with a soft, noncommittal "Yeah."
Even this cold response from William was enough to make Melinda happy.
Before, he used to ignore her completely.
It was because William suspected that Melinda was behind his daughter's disappearance.
William had been investigating her all this time.
Melinda thought, utterly unfazed, 'Yeah, it was me, so what?
'He's got no proof, nothing he can do to me.
'Once that little bitch is dead, his heart will finally return to me.'
Seeing the young couple interacting, Sally turned to Melinda and asked, "You must feel a bit cooped up staying home alone. If there's anything you'd like to do or try, just let us know. We'd be happy to give you some suggestions."
Sally wanted Melinda to get out and socialize more, hoping she would shine. She believed that once her son saw her in this new light, he would naturally grow fond of her.
'A woman who spends all her time cooped up at home knows nothing about the outside world,' Sally admonished.
Sally said, "How could you possibly feel at ease cooped up like this?"
"Let alone trying for a baby," Sally added with a sigh.
Melinda's expression froze for a moment. She thought, "Of course, what I want the most is just waiting for William to come home every single day."
"Not really," Melinda replied, "I mostly just play cards with some friends."
William let out a bitter smile. "This is all my fault. If I hadn't lost our daughter, she could've been here to keep you company."
His eyes clouded with sorrow and self-reproach as he spoke, all the while carefully studying Melinda's expression.
Feeling guilty, Melinda quickly averted her eyes, not daring to meet William's gaze.
Though a flicker of panic rose inside her, Melinda forced herself to maintain a calm exterior.
Melinda thought in alarm, 'Why is William suddenly bringing up that little bitch today?'
'Ever since that little bitch went missing, her name became a taboo in this house. No one dared to bring it up.
'Of course he has no idea where that little bitch is.
'That little bitch... she'll be gone soon.'
"Honey," she said softly, "let's not dwell on those unhappy things. Since you're finally home, how about we go shopping later and catch a movie tonight? What do you say?"
Melinda thought, 'Young couples these days love going to the movies. If we can share some romantic moments together, maybe, little by little, my husband will finally open his heart to me.'
Sally chimed in supportively, "Why don't you two go out on a date tonight and enjoy a romantic evening together? I'll stay here for the night, so you can have the evening all to yourselves."
She was secretly hoping her son and daughter-in-law would finally consummate their marriage so she could have a grandchild soon.
Sally thought in exasperation, 'What was he thinking, bringing up that little girl today, of all days?
'That little girl from who knows where... we don't even know if she's truly a Boone by blood!'
Sally was displeased that her son had mentioned the little girl, but she suppressed her irritation. Quickly changing the subject, she suggested the couple go out for a romantic evening.
William set down his fork, his expression darkening.
"I'm done. Enjoy the rest of your meal," he said coolly. With that, he pushed back his chair to leave.
Melinda noticed the change in her husband's expression.
Panic surged through Melinda.
Melinda frantically grabbed his sleeve, her voice trembling with desperation as she pleaded, "Darling, please don't go. Stay with me, okay? I know you still miss her... How about we have a baby?"
To think William still hadn't gotten over that woman, and now he'd even brought her bastard child into our home, Melinda was going crazy.
Melinda thought bitterly, 'And what about me? Where does that leave me? What am I supposed to do?
