The news that Arielle had only scored 150 points spread like wildfire across the entire school within just one class period.
Arielle was something of a campus celebrity, and she'd made more enemies than friends.
The news was music to some people's ears, they were positively gleeful.
It was a vicious thrill to finally have their enemy under their heel, a pure, unfiltered satisfaction.
At lunchtime, as Meredith and her clique made their way to the cafeteria, they gossiped gleefully about the scandal.
Of course, she didn't join in the conversation. She just quietly listened as the others mocked Arielle.
She was practically bursting with joy, though her face betrayed nothing.
Her scheming mind was already calculating how Arielle would be scolded by their parents when they got home.
Her steps felt light, as if she were walking on air.
Arielle entered the cafeteria, still standing out like a sore thumb.
For some reason, the third-floor dining hall was unusually crowded today.
All eyes kept drifting toward that solitary, aloof figure.
No doubt about it, the hot topic was the student who'd scored a measly 150 on the monthly exam.
Students huddled in small groups, shoveling food while whispering among themselves.
Against all expectations, Meredith, Perla, and their clique showed up at the third-floor cafeteria, a place usually beneath their dignity. Everyone knew that they were there to witness Arielle's public humiliation and savor every cringe-worthy moment of her discomfort.
Arielle sat alone at a shared table near the back of the cafeteria.
She picked at her food.
She had no one who was willing to be near her.
Day after day, she walked alone.
Even in the noisy cafeteria, she could feel the mockery and contempt in their eyes without hearing them.
"150 points? Are you for real? Man, my grades suck, but I've never scored that low!" one student snickered.
Another said, "Tell me about it! I was shocked too, thought she was all high and mighty, but her grades are rock bottom."
Meredith tugged at Perla's sleeve, her face twisted in feigned concern. "Stop it," she murmured.
To onlookers, she appeared every bit the protective sister, as if she were genuinely worried Arielle might be laughed at.
"I'm gonna say it anyway," Perla sneered. "Finally got dirt on Arielle. This is absolutely hilarious!"
Mya giggled behind her hand. "I'd love to interview her about how she's feeling right now," she added with a laugh.
"If you've got the guts, go ask her yourself," another student taunted.
"I couldn't care less. Let's post this online and show everyone what a "model student" we've got at Peterborough."
One student sneered, "They say she's the most diligent student in Class 1, but she still ranked dead last. Even our class slacker scored higher than her. What a brilliant mind she must have!"
"Exactly! Out of 750 total points, she only scored 150. Even if Class 1 doesn't care about grades, no one's ever scored this low before. What an embarrassment to our school!"
Another student snickered, "Bet she can't even understand the options!"
They were all watching her like hawks, waiting for her to crack, hoping she'd break down, lash out, or at least look ashamed.
But to their disappointment, nothing happened.
She simply finished her meal, without so much as glancing at the gossiping crowd.
A student thought, 'Wait... she's just walking away? Just like that?
'That's so not like her!
'She's usually such a cocky bitch, always ready to throw punches.
'But today, with everyone talking shit about her, she didn't even react?'
Perla and the others watched Arielle walk away, their eyes full of disappointment.
Perla had even egged on some classmates to make a scene about it in the cafeteria, hoping to rile Arielle up. But she didn't react at all, she remained utterly unfazed.
It felt like punching a pillow, all that effort with zero impact.
"Damn it! How infuriating!" Perla seethed.
Two things rocked Peterborough that day.
In the morning, word spread that Arielle had only scored 150 points.
By afternoon, everyone was buzzing about Gavin strolling around campus with Meredith.
Both events revolved around the Bradford family.
One was about the real heiress, the other an impostor.
Yet their reputations were worlds apart.
Meredith basked in the envious stares of everyone she passed along the way.
Her radiant smile lingered on her face even after she got home.
Sharon saw how happy her daughter looked and hurried over. "Something good must've happened today! You've been beaming ever since you walked in."
Meredith glanced toward the door and deliberately raised her voice. "Our monthly exam results are out."
"Let me guess, did my girl do better this time?" Sharon smiled as she poured a glass of water and handed it to her. "You've worked so hard, sweetheart."
Just from the look on her face, Sharon knew she must have done well. If she hadn't, she'd have been in tears already.
Meredith caught a glimpse of someone entering the room out of the corner of her eye and replied to Sharon, "I scored 500 this time, ranked tenth in my class! That's a big improvement, isn't it?"
Sharon's eyes widened in disbelief, she had never seen her daughter do so well before.
Overjoyed, she pulled her daughter into a tight hug.
She said, "Is it true? Top ten in your class? My girl, you're amazing! I have to tell your dad the good news, tonight, we're going out to celebrate!"
Just as Sharon finished speaking, Arielle walked in.
The laughter in the living room died instantly at her appearance.
Without even sparing them a glance, Arielle headed straight for the stairs.
Meredith was thrilled to bits.
'I bet Arielle is absolutely miserable right now, she must be so jealous of me!' Meredith gloated inwardly.
Sharon frowned as Arielle walked past without a greeting. She called sharply from behind, "Arielle, how did you do on your exam?"
Arielle paused mid-step.
A cold smirk curled at the corners of her lips.
She thought, 'Does she actually care about my grades?
'Of course not!
'She just wants to use my shortcomings to highlight Meredith's excellence.'
Meredith's eyes sparkled with smug triumph.
'I've finally beaten her, even if it's just this once!' she thought.
Seeing Arielle remain silent, Meredith tugged at Sharon's sleeve and said in a cloyingly sweet voice, "Mom, let her go upstairs and rest, she studies so hard every day."
It was as good as saying outright, "All that effort, and she still ended up dead last. Not just in class, dead last in the entire school."
Sharon thought at once, 'Something's up!
'If Meredith's results are out, then Arielle's must be too.
'There's no way a girl who grew up in the slums could get good grades.
'This is the perfect chance to take her down a peg.
'Maybe then she'll learn a thing or two from Meredith.'
Arielle coolly tossed out a number, "150 points."
She added flatly, "Dead last in the entire school."
With that, she turned on her heel and walked away without showing any shame.
Her tone was as calm as if she were talking about someone else's score.
Hearing that shockingly low score, Meredith nearly burst out laughing.
She bit her lip to stifle her glee, then quickly turned to her mother, instantly morphing her expression into one of feigned concern.
Sharon blinked in disbelief and turned to Meredith beside her. "Did I hear that right? What did she just say her score was?"
Meredith immediately put on an embarrassed look, fidgeting awkwardly. "Mom, please, let's not talk about it. She isn't in a good mood, we really shouldn't bring up her scores anymore," she said, feigning concern.
The more Meredith hedged, the more Sharon burned with curiosity to know Arielle's exact score.
She said, "Did she just say 150 or 650? I didn't catch that!"
Sharon stubbornly dragged the conversation back to the results.
Meredith let out an exaggerated sigh, putting on a show of resignation. "Arielle scored 150 points, dead last in the whole school," she announced, as if the words pained her to admit.
At those words, Sharon saw red.
It wasn't the 150 points that infuriated her, nor even the poor performance itself.
What truly set her off was that Arielle had ranked dead last in the entire school.
If she'd been second-to-last, Sharon could have lived with it.
According to Peterborough High School regulations, the student who ranked dead last in the entire school must have their parents summoned.
Sharon's face paled as she thought, 'Does this mean I have to show up as the mother of the worst student? No way, I can't stand that humiliation!
'No way! I'd die of shame before facing that humiliation!'
