Three days after Madison's confession, Dominic was officially cleared of all charges—free at last. The so-called bribery scandal had been nothing but a sham.
Our wedding, the one we'd poured our hearts into planning, had been ruined by the whole mess.
In the quiet of the night, Dominic's voice was thick with regret. "Honey, I'm so sorry…"
I squeezed his arm and pressed a kiss to his lips. "You didn't do it on purpose. And just because the wedding got interrupted doesn't mean we can't grow old together. If anything, it'll make us love each other even more, don't you think?"
He hadn't been sleeping well. For a man from a political family, being publicly humiliated at his own wedding was like watching a proud eagle get its wings clipped.
We still hadn't taken our honeymoon.
"Dominic," I said softly, pulling out the itinerary I'd prepared weeks ago, "I want to go somewhere. Will you come with me?"
He didn't hesitate. "Give me two days."
He needed time to sort out work. So did I.
For the next forty-eight hours, we both pushed through our to-do lists like mad, clearing the way for our escape.
The morning we left was perfect—a crisp spring weekend, the kind made for road trips. We drove south, stopping whenever we pleased—hiking, sightseeing, eating at roadside diners. Eventually, we reached a seaside town bursting with flowers.
And that's where we ran into Thomas and Sarah.
They looked ragged, desperate. The second they spotted us, their eyes lit up like we were their last hope. Dominic shut them down immediately, but Sarah—ever the opportunist—turned her pleading gaze on me.
"Charlotte, I was wrong," she sobbed, wiping at her tears. "I'm sorry for everything. I can't undo it, but I'll spend the rest of my life trying to make it right."
She blamed Madison for misleading her, painting herself as some innocent victim.
Pathetic.
I almost laughed. No wonder Madison turned out the way she did—she'd learned from the best. Thank God I'd been swapped at birth. At least I'd been spared her influence.
"Charlotte, please," Sarah begged. "Forgive me."
I stared at her, cold and unmoved. After a long silence, I turned away. "Could you be quiet? You're ruining the view."
People only regret losing something once it's gone. But regret? There's no cure for that.
Sarah vanished after that, but Thomas took her place. The man who'd once been so proud he wouldn't even look at me now stood before me, head bowed, begging for forgiveness.
I laughed. "What, you want me to take care of you now?"
He flinched.
"Don't you have another daughter?" I tilted my head. "Oh, right—she's in prison. Have you even visited her? Or was your bond always that flimsy?"
His face burned with shame.
I leaned in. "And if you keep bothering me, I'll make sure your creditors know exactly where to find you. Think they'll let that slide?"
That shut him up. He never came near me again.
A few days later, I heard Thomas had fallen ill—really ill. Feverish and delirious, he kept muttering, "Charlotte, I was wrong… I deserve to die…"
Too little, too late.
A love that comes after everything's been destroyed is worthless—just like grass after a wildfire.
Their misery caught the attention of some social media do-gooder, who posted about their plight online. Unfortunately for them, Lyria's creditors saw it too.
Penniless and broken, Thomas and Sarah were dragged back to face their debts.
Dominic and I? We kept traveling.
By the time autumn rolled around, I couldn't keep anything down. A trip to the doctor confirmed it—I was pregnant.
With twins.
Dominic was over the moon. He called his parents immediately, and Grace insisted we come home so I could rest. Honestly, I felt fine, but everyone around me panicked.
