They treated me like glass—no lifting, no stress, and definitely no sharing a bed with Dominic.
He groaned, flopping onto the couch. "Guess I'm celibate again."
I bit back a laugh.
But as my belly grew, so did the memories. I couldn't stop thinking about the baby I'd lost in my past life.
If only you were still here…
Maybe it was the grief, but for nights in a row, I dreamed of a child calling me Mom. He said he was cold. Begged me to hold him.
I woke up gasping.
Dominic stirred beside me, pulling me close. "Baby, what's wrong? The twins kicking again?"
I hesitated, then told him everything—my rebirth, the accident, the child I'd lost.
For a moment, he was silent. Then he crushed me against his chest. "I'm just glad you're back. I don't know what I'd have done without you all these years."
He never asked for details. But sometimes, in the dead of night, I'd catch him touching me—just to make sure I was still there.
Summer came blazing in. And right on schedule, so did the twins—born after a grueling day and night of labor.
Lucas Montgomery, the older one, was Dominic in miniature. Camilla, his little sister, was my spitting image.
After they were born, the nightmares stopped. The child who'd haunted my dreams was gone.
On their first birthday, Thomas and Sarah showed up with gifts. When I ignored them, they left without a word.
I heard Madison had been released from prison. Thomas and Sarah had disowned her. Desperate, she went looking for her birth mother—the dishwasher from the hotel.
But her mother was already dead.
With no money and failing health, Madison ended up on the streets.
No one expected her to show up outside our home, begging for food in front of the kids.
"Mom!" Lucas screamed, barreling into my arms. "There's a bad lady!"
Camilla clung to me, wide-eyed.
I held them tight and looked up—but Madison was already slinking away, swallowed by shame.
Years passed. Lucas and Camilla started preschool.
Everything was perfect—except for one thing.
Lucas was terrified of water. He refused to even dip a toe in the pool.
"Sweetheart," I coaxed, "your sister's already swimming. It's an important skill. You have to learn."
He shook his head violently. "Mom, when I get in the water, it's like I'm in the car again—everything's dark, and there's too much water. I don't want to swim!"
My breath caught.
Staring at him, I finally understood.
He was the same child. The one I'd lost.
That's why the nightmares had stopped.
Tears spilled over as I pulled him close. "Okay, baby. No swimming. Not ever." I kissed his forehead. "Thank you for choosing me again."
Somehow, against all odds, heaven had given us a second chance.
And this time? Our family would only grow stronger.
The End.
