The moment his words left his mouth, the weight of their stares pierced me like daggers—pity, shock, and smug satisfaction all twisted together in their eyes, threatening to pull me under like a riptide.
All I could do was shake my head, my lips curling in bitter amusement.
At the time, I thought I was just fulfilling my duty to the pack. It never crossed my mind that I hadn't gone through the bonding ceremony. And never—not in a million years—did I imagine Ethan would replace me with Olivia.
Olivia—his so-called first love. The same woman who vanished without a trace when the Silverfang Pack was on the brink of ruin. Cold. Heartless. Years passed without so much as a whisper from her, not even a backward glance. And now, just as I'd finally dragged the pack's business back from the edge, she waltzed in right on cue, ready to claim the rewards of my blood, sweat, and tears.
But the real fool here wasn't her—it was Ethan. Blind, stupid Ethan, clinging to a woman who'd left him to rot.
The thought burned through me like wildfire, my words slicing through the air like a blade.
"Ethan, you don't have the right to banish me."
I tilted my chin up, my voice dripping with icy amusement. "This is your last chance. If she loses that pup, and you pledge yourself to me—fully, completely—we can still be a family. But this offer? It's one-time only."
Ethan's eyes nearly bulged out of his skull, his finger jabbing at me like a weapon as his voice roared with fury.
"Who the hell do you think you are, giving me orders? Olivia's carrying the heir to the Alpha bloodline. She's the mate I've always dreamed of. And you? You can beg all you want, but all you'll get from me is cold, hard rejection!"
Around us, stifled laughter rippled through the crowd, their mocking stares making it clear they thought I'd lost my damn mind.
But I didn't care.
I never made promises I couldn't keep, and every word I spoke was the truth. I gave Ethan this ultimatum because I could enforce it.
If not for the Alpha and Luna's orders to tolerate him, he wouldn't even have the right to stand in my presence.
I held his defiant glare without flinching. "So, you'd rather break the mate bond and cast me out just to keep your little mistress?"
"You bitch, shut your mouth!" Olivia hissed, venom lacing every syllable. "You're just not loved. How pathetic do you have to be not to see that?"
Without hesitation, Ethan pulled her close, cradling her like she was made of spun glass.
"That's right, Elena. I don't want you anymore. Without me, you're not fit to sit in the Beta's seat. Olivia and our pup—that's my real family."
I exhaled slowly, my voice eerily calm. "What a shame, Ethan. You just threw away your last chance."
His expression darkened, frost settling over his features as he glared at me with pure disgust.
"Cut the act. You still think you're some untouchable Beta? Without me, you're nothing. Who the hell would even want your pathetic offer?"
Olivia wasn't done. She jabbed a finger at my forehead like she owned the damn world. "Who do you think you are, barking orders like that? Use your brain—hand over the project. From now on, every cent of Silverfang Pack's fortune belongs to me."
I didn't flinch. I smacked her hand away without a second thought.
"Who told you any stray mutt could just waltz in and take what's mine?"
"Are you out of your damn mind, Elena?" Ethan shoved me hard before turning to cradle Olivia's hand like it was made of gold. "Does it hurt?"
Olivia bared her teeth, her voice sharp as a knife. "Ethan, she's provoking you. Don't hold back."
Ethan nodded coldly, his gaze dripping with contempt as it locked onto me.
"You can't even handle a simple handover. If someone like you could manage this project, then Olivia—from the noble Nightfall Pack—will do it ten times better. And my father will back her."
A soft, mocking laugh escaped me. "Oh? And how are you so sure your father will accept her?"
His smirk was pure arrogance as he rested a possessive hand on Olivia's belly.
"She's carrying my pup—the future Alpha heir of Silverfang Pack. That alone means you've already lost."
I studied him, his pride oozing from every pore, before offering one last, quiet warning.
"Don't forget, Ethan. You still have one final bet to place."
