                    Liam POV
I stared at the woman in front of me in shock, unable to believe my eyes. When Fiona had come back, I hadn’t expected her to come back with Regan, of all people. She was dead after all. I had seen her body on the pyre, seen it burn. For her to be standing here….well, it was unfathomable and nothing short of a miracle.
“Is that…is that…” I trailed off, certain I was imagining things.
She could not possibly be standing right in front of me as whole as she was, and yet, the truth was right in front of my eyes. I almost reached out to touch her to make sure that she was real.
Then my mate laughed. It sounded musical and sweet. “It’s really my mother, Liam," she said thickly, on the verge of tears. She sounded as though she could not quite believe it either.
She sat down on the chair, Regan tentatively joining her on another seat, pinning her gaze on me.
“But how? No offense,” I said to Regan, flopping back onto my chair and rubbing my eyes, “but I saw you die. We buried your ashes. We all did.”
It was the brutal, honest truth. I could not help myself.
She winced. “It seems the moon goddess took pity on me. She granted me a second chance, Liam, and this time I don’t intend to waste the time I have on this earth," she vowed, a look of determination on her face.
I looked at both of them incredulously. “You met the moon goddess?” I asked slowly, wondering if I had misheard them both.
I mean the moon goddess! That was almost unheard of. It had happened throughout history, but for it to happen now? It was like meeting Santa Claus, I thought dumbly, only this was our mother, our entire being that had created us and our world.
God, I wondered what that was like. The moon goddess was only ever a legend, the mother of all our creation, and now my mate and her mother were stating they had met her for real! I was envious.I would have given anything to have been able to meet her as well.
“Yes. She brought me back,” Regan explained, glancing at Fiona, who was nodding in agreement.
I had never seen my mate look so joyful as she did right now. The last few days had been hard on her and taken its toll, from Regan’s death to her challenging Celeste. She no longer looked as tired as she had been, and there was now a light shining in her eyes. I faced Regan, not sure where to go from here. What did one say to somebody who had died and then come back to life? I tried to choose my words carefully, not wanting to offend her, but also knowing that we needed the details of what she wanted to do next.
“What are your plans now? I’m sure that your mates would be ecstatic to have you back,” I said, finally feeling foolish.
Of course, she would go back to her mates. It’s what I would do if I were brought back to life. Fiona suddenly looked stricken as though I had reminded her of something.
“Oh my god,” she said as Regan turned and looked at her, raising a brow in question. “I…I challenged Celeste to a duel and then won your pack. Now that you’re back, we should notify my fathers before they transition everybody over here.”
She wanted to change her mind about transitioning or merging both packs together? I eyed my mate in surprise.
She still looked panicked. I knew how she felt. We couldn’t possibly take over Reagan’s pack now that she was alive. It was not fathomable. The pack had been Regan's, and now that she was no longer deceased, the pack should rightfully belong to her again. It was the sensible thing to do, but my mate had worked hard to fight against Celeste and put things to rights.
My hand instinctively reached for my cell phone. “I’ll call them, explain the situation…” I began, already planning everything I would say to Alpha Xander and Alpha Xavier.
I trailed off as Regan held up a hand, preventing me from doing just that.
“Wait," she blurted out, interrupting me again.
“Mother,” Fiona sounded surprised. “What are you thinking? Of course, the pack is rightfully yours. I only challenged Celeste for the position of Alpha because you were gone…” She flushed a bright pink at the reminder.
But Regan shook her head again and eyed us both with a look of utmost concentration. “The title is rightfully yours. I saw everything, Fiona,” she explained kindly, “and I don’t regret the actions you took in keeping the pack from Celeste. You did well,” she exhaled, “I’m only sorry it came down to that. Celeste was raised better. Perhaps Alpha Max might be able to knock some sense into your sister. Once we realized the weakness of her wolf, we never should have tried to go through with the ceremony,” she added, shaking her head and looking remorseful. “She would not have been capable of taking care of the pack. What you do with the pack is nobody’s business but your own," she explained quietly with a shrug.
My mouth dropped open. “But…Regan, you never agreed to…” I trailed off.
Regan might not have agreed to it, but judging by the fierce expression on her face, it was pointless to argue with her now.
“I’m agreeing now,” she interrupted fiercely, “the pack is yours, Fiona. It should always have been. I was blinded by my love for Celeste. I am no longer the same woman I was before. Trust me. I trust you to do the right thing, and if that means merging the packs, so be it.”
“What about Fiona’s fathers?” I asked slowly, “Don’t you think they might feel differently once they lay eyes on you?” I finished.
She snorted at me. I tried not to take offense. “They won’t lay eyes on me until the packs have been merged. That way, I can guarantee nothing goes wrong. Not to mention, I don’t want to distract them from doing what’s right. They can wait a few more days to see me. I want to spend as much time with both of you as possible. I take it you have some suitable accommodation for me, I wouldn’t want to intrude on your privacy,” she added.
“You’ll stay in the pack house,” I said, shooting a glance at Fion, who was already nodding in agreement. “I wouldn’t have it any other way. You’re family,” I added, and saw tears in her eyes.
“Thank you, although I don’t believe I’ve earned that title yet. I just want to be able to assist you so that this transition goes smoothly. I want to be able to retire,” she explained quietly: and enjoy the time I have left. I guess that being dead makes you appreciate life so much more. I can’t wait to see my mates,” she added, “but right now I want to help Fiona and you.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m sure. My mates can wait. I know that might seem cruel, but if they change their minds… they are just that stubborn. I don’t want to risk it. We can have a reunion when they get here.”
If she was sure, then who was I to argue? I smiled and then nodded at Regan. “Very well if that’s what you want.”
“It is,” she said bluntly and then got to her feet. “I’m going to give you two privacy and check out the grounds. I’ll come back,” she was quick to assure a slightly apprehensive Fiona, “but I think you two might need some time to discuss things. Besides” she added with twinkling eyes, “I have a feeling I’m getting in the way. Thank you by the way,” she turned to me, “for the beautiful memorial stone. It was a lovely gesture for you to do.”
Except it wasn’t needed now, I thought with some amusement even as I dipped my head.
“You’re welcome. If you want a tour, I can get one of my men to…”
“No need,” Regan’s voice was certain, “I can tour your grounds myself thank you. Fiona,” she turned to her daughter “I appreciate everything you’ve done for me but now it’s time I helped you. speaking of which, “she suddenly turned to me, raising a brow “when do the two of you plan on getting married? I’m not getting any younger,” she teased, and I saw Fiona blush while I shifted awkwardly on my seat at the question.
