My father, Gary, let out a heavy sigh, like the weight of the world had just crashed down on him.
"You know," he started, his voice tight with frustration, "I always planned to leave the family's future in your hands, Logan. Alexa was supposed to be the princess—living free, as long as you were there to protect her. But I never thought… you'd turn out to be this twisted."
His eyes burned with fury.
"And the slow poison in Aunt Claire's supplements—don't even try to lie. That was you, wasn't it?" Dad's voice was pure venom. "If it weren't for this trip and her routine check-up, I'd never have known the person I trusted all these years was a damn time bomb."
I stood frozen, stunned.
So that was why.
No wonder my parents had been gone so long.
In my past life, I'd sensed something was off.
I'd tried calling them while they were abroad, but Dad told me to wait until they got back. I had no idea that would be the last time I'd ever hear his voice.
But this time, he wasn't holding back.
Without hesitation, he pulled out his phone and called the cops. Poisoning wasn't exactly something you could sweep under the rug.
As they dragged Logan away, I snatched a sample of his blood.
I needed it to break the life-swap curse.
But one question burned in my mind: How the hell did Logan know about these dark, forbidden spells?!
Dad sighed again, regret etched into his face. "Logan's mother… she's from the Appalachians," he admitted. "Years ago, when I visited, I got hit with a Gu curse. That's how I ended up with her. Eventually, a master broke it, and we went our separate ways. But… you know how it is. Once a husband, always a husband. I couldn't just abandon him, so I took him in."
As for Scott—he'd always been close to me. But this time, it was like he was possessed, helping Logan screw me over. Turns out, he'd fallen under the curse too.
Everything made sense now.
I'd grown up with Scott, but Jessica had barely met him. Why would he throw everything away for her?
With Logan's blood in hand, I went back to the old man who'd warned me about the curses. Together, we used it to break the life-swap and undo the other spells.
When Scott finally woke up and realized what he'd done, guilt wrecked him. He even promised to make it up to me with—get this—a hundred meals.
I rolled my eyes. Seriously? A hundred meals? Like that fixes anything.
Meanwhile, Jessica's soul snapped back into the body she never should've left.
Once everything was settled, Dad held a press conference to officially introduce me to the world.
"I'm Gary Montgomery, president of Montgomery Enterprises," he announced, pride ringing in his voice. "And I have one daughter—Alexa Green Montgomery, my only heir. She's the one I trust to take over when the time comes."
As for Logan? Cut off from the Montgomerys for good. No second chances.
I looked at my parents, really looked at them—the streaks of silver in their hair, the years we'd lost. But one thing was clear: their love for me had never faded.
