Abigail, sitting across from her, naturally noticed the contact name on Sally's phone. It was Jaxon.
Abigail giggled behind her hand. "Speak of the devil. Does Jaxon have some kind of telepathic connection with you?"
Sally playfully tapped her arm. "Cut it out." Phone in hand, Sally stood up and walked toward the entrance.
All she could think about right now were the memories of that charged moment she and Jaxon had shared upstairs.
After a moment's hesitation, Sally finally picked up the phone. "Mr. Zale, are you looking for me?"
"I heard tomorrow is Dad's follow-up appointment?" The man's deep voice over the phone revealed nothing—his tone was completely unreadable.
Sally gave a slight nod. "Yes."
Jaxon asked, "When are you coming?"
At these words, Sally's heart skipped a beat. She didn't know why, but right now, the thought of running into Jaxon really terrified her.
Sally hesitated and said, "I'm not quite sure yet. Maybe in the morning, or maybe the afternoon."
Before Sally could finish, Jaxon cut in sharply, "Give me an exact time," he demanded.
"Mr. Zale, are you heading back to see your father?" Sally said. "That won't interfere with my follow-up checkup for him. You can go visit him whenever you like."
"It's you I want to see," Jaxon said. His voice was deep and unwavering.
Sally's eyelashes fluttered wildly. She couldn't believe he'd say something so blunt, her heart racing.
At that moment, it suddenly dawned on her why Jaxon and Connor got along so well.
After a moment's thought, Sally replied, "Evening."
Jaxon's voice carried a hint of displeasure. "Then why did you just say it could be morning or afternoon? Were you deliberately avoiding the time I'd be there? Mrs. Zale, do you really not want to see me that much?"
"No, Mr. Zale, you're overthinking it. I've got other things to do, so I'll hang up now." Sally didn't dare hesitate for even a second—she hung up on him right away.
Leaning against the doorway, Sally took a long moment to steady her nerves before she finally calmed down.
The entire next day, Sally couldn't settle down. The mere thought of seeing Jaxon that evening left her restless and distracted.
Before she knew it, evening had arrived. Bracing herself, Sally grabbed her medical kit and drove to the Zale Mansion.
Even before stepping inside, Sally spotted the Maybach parked right at the entrance. Her grip on the steering wheel involuntarily tightened, her expression darkening instantly.
Opening the door and stepping inside, Sally quickly scanned the room but saw no trace of Jaxon.
She had assumed Jaxon would be in his father's room, but when she opened the door, all she saw was the butler and Lauren inside.
"You're here," Lauren said. Her voice was low and heavy, her eyes never leaving Sally as she sized her up intently.
Sally took a few more glances at Lauren. There was something subtly different in the way Lauren looked at her, but for the life of her, Sally couldn't quite put her finger on what it was.
As the follow-up examination concluded, Lauren ventured tentatively. "How are the results?"
"His condition is relatively stable," Sally said. "Please keep following the treatment plan I prescribed, and he should gradually recover."
Sally stood up from the bedside and began packing her medical kit.
"Alright." Lauren sized her up briefly and said coolly, "Why don't you stay for dinner tonight?"
Sally's heart leaped into her throat. 'If I stay for dinner, I'll definitely run into Jaxon,' she thought anxiously.
"Thanks, but I have other plans tonight," Sally said without hesitation.
Lauren nodded thoughtfully. The moment she saw Sally heading out, she quickly followed after her.
Just as Sally was about to head downstairs, Lauren's voice suddenly called out from behind her, "Sally?"
Sally suddenly stopped at the sound, turned to look at Lauren, and asked, "What is it?"
"Come with me. We need to talk—" Before even finishing her sentence, Lauren turned and strode straight toward the end of the corridor.
Sally's brow furrowed slightly as a faint unease suddenly stirred within her. After a few seconds of hesitation, she finally followed.
The two stood by the window at the end of the corridor, neither speaking.
At last, Lauren broke the silence. "Sally, what's going on between you and Jaxon?"
At these words, Sally's heart pounded wildly. 'Did I ever slip up and give myself away?' she wondered, her mind racing through her memories. 'No, that can't be it,' she immediately dismissed the thought.
Doing her best to stay calm, Sally said, "Lauren, are you even listening to yourself? What other relationship could there possibly be between Jaxon and me?"
"That day, I saw you and Jaxon walk out of Brad's room together." Lauren's face turned incredibly grim. "Don't you think you should explain it?"
Sally felt the heavy weight in her chest finally lift. 'So that's what she saw,' she thought. 'Thank goodness she didn't catch us kissing or see anything even more compromising.'
Sally decided to be completely honest. "That day, Brad and I had a heated argument. He turned violent and actually started choking me in the room. Jaxon intervened and stopped him. He must have come in just to check on me out of concern."
Lauren's eyes darkened further at her explanation. Her gaze still held a trace of skepticism, as if she wasn't entirely convinced by Sally's explanation.
Sally said with an icy smile, "Then what exactly do you think there could be between me and Jaxon, Lauren? What other relationship could there possibly be?"
"Lauren? You and Brad aren't divorced yet. I should be your elder, right?" Lauren sneered.
"In my heart, we ceased being husband and wife long ago. He's the one dragging his feet on the divorce," Sally said, her voice icy. "So there's no need to mention it, right?"
Sally's words had clearly gotten under Lauren's skin. Her chest was heaving with anger.
"I have other matters to attend to, so I won't be staying any longer," Sally said coolly. Without another word, she spun on her heel and made straight for the stairs.
From the moment she arrived until she was about to leave, Sally hadn't caught a single glimpse of Jaxon. She assumed he hadn't actually returned, that his car was just parked there temporarily.
But just as she reached her car, the back door of the Maybach ahead suddenly swung open from inside.
The moment Sally saw Jaxon, she froze in her tracks, unable to believe he was standing there. 'He's been in the car all this time?' Sally thought in shock.
Jaxon strode toward her. "How did the follow-up go?"
Sally met his mesmerizing gaze and swallowed hard. After a brief pause, she replied softly, "His condition is basically stable now, but he still needs regular follow-up checkups. I'll make sure to come by on schedule."
Jaxon gazed down at her in silence.
Sally asked tentatively, "Were you in the car the whole time? You didn't even go in to see your dad?"
