Sally's face visibly tensed up after hearing Jaxon's words. She steadied herself, then immediately pushed him away. "Mr. Zale, don't be ridiculous."
"I meant every word." Jaxon was pushed back slightly, but suddenly seized Sally's arm again in one fluid motion. This time, he pinned her firmly against the driver's side door.
Sally instinctively glanced around. Brad's guys had been lurking around Windmere Estates for a while now, and the last thing she needed was them catching something they shouldn't.
"What?" Jaxon reached out, gripping her chin and forcing her to face him. "You scared Brad might find out?"
"Mr. Zale, perhaps we should keep some distance."
"We slept together, and now you're telling me to keep my distance?"
As Jaxon's voice dropped lower, Sally avoided his gaze, not daring to look up at him.
Jaxon released her and said coolly, "Come have dinner with me. I need to talk to you." Before Sally could respond, he grabbed her hand and pulled her swiftly toward the restaurant across the street.
Sally was about to say that Abigail had dinner ready at home, but, sensing the oppressive air around Jaxon, she swallowed her words.
Right across from Sally's place was a well-reviewed restaurant. After they entered a private dining room, the two sat across from each other.
Sally lifted her gaze, her expression a mix of curiosity and wariness as she studied him. "Mr. Zale, what did you want to tell me?"
Jaxon was wiping his hand with a napkin, slow and deliberate, that same quiet kind of grace he always had. Once he set the napkin down, he leaned in a little, one arm sliding around her waist. He pulled her in and said, "Be with me."
The second those words dropped, Sally's heart jumped straight into her throat. She knew exactly what he meant. 'Is he asking me to be his mistress?' she thought.
Jaxon was single. A guy his age, having certain needs, made sense. But no matter how she looked at it, that mistress couldn't be her.
"Mr. Zale, please don't say things like that again. There's just no way between us."
"No way?" Jaxon tightened his grip on Sally's waist. "What makes you think that? Was last night not pleased—"
"Enough." Sally cut him off sharply before he could finish. Her cheeks instantly flushed crimson.
Jaxon smirked, his voice low and husky. "Seems we're pretty compatible. What makes you think otherwise? Or are you seriously planning to just sleep with me and bolt?"
Sally was at a loss for words. 'Jaxon already has someone he truly loves,' she thought. 'He'd never make me his official partner—at best, I'd just be his mistress. And if Kendall ever gets divorced, they'd undoubtedly end up together.
'I had just escaped one messy situation—why would I jump into another? Especially when both Jaxon and Brad are from the Zale family.'
"Cat got your tongue?" Jaxon's voice cut through her thoughts.
Sally hadn't even figured out how to respond yet when there was a knock at the door. Jaxon heard it too, and the hand he'd been resting on her waist dropped away like nothing had happened.
The server walked in carrying their food, leaving the door wide open behind him.
"Jaxon?" A familiar voice called out from the doorway.
Sally turned toward the sound, her gaze snapping to its source. When she saw who had just walked in, her brows furrowed slightly.
Jaxon stood up and turned around. "Kendall? What are you doing here?"
'Kendall. He only ever calls me Mrs. Zale or uses my full name. But with the woman he truly loves, of course he's so much more intimate,' thought Sally. Her heart gradually settled, yet inexplicably, a faint sense of irritation crept in.
'All I could think about were the images of last night with Jaxon—those moments kept replaying in my mind, impossible to shake off.'
"I was just running some errands nearby and thought I'd grab dinner alone—never expected to bump into you two." Kendall's gaze lingered on Jaxon. "Jaxon, what a coincidence. Mind if I join you for dinner?"
Jaxon's expression instantly cooled. Clearly, that wasn't the kind of move he saw coming. Sally glanced between the two of them, quietly watching. Jaxon met her eyes for a second, like he was checking how she felt about it.
Sally gave a slight nod. "Sure, why not? Mr. Zale ordered way too much food anyway—we'll never finish it all."
Jaxon's brows furrowed slightly as he stared at Sally in disbelief.
"Well then, how thoughtful of you, Mrs. Zale, to give me the chance to dine with Jaxon," said Kendall.
Sally shot Kendall a sidelong glance, catching the fake smile plastered on her face. Their conversation in the restroom that day was still vivid in her mind. But with Jaxon present, she didn't want to embarrass Kendall.
Sally turned to a nearby waiter and requested, "Another place setting, please."
Throughout the whole time, Jaxon kept giving her bewildered looks. Sally was completely baffled. 'Didn't I just help him keep the woman he likes here? So why does he look even more upset?' she wondered.
During dinner, Kendall kept piling food onto Jaxon's plate—it was plain to see how much she adored him. Jaxon's expression softened slightly.
Sally thought to herself, 'I feel like the world's biggest third wheel right now.' After picking at her food for a bit, she decided it was time to make her exit.
"I'm full. You two take your time. I've got stuff to handle at home, so I'll go settle the check." Sally grabbed her purse and phone, then stood up from her seat.
Jaxon stood up, casually grabbed his suit jacket, and said, "I'll walk you out."
"No need. You should stay and eat with Ms. Harper. I'll just call a car."
But before she could leave, Jaxon seized her hand and pulled her toward the door. "Kendall, we're heading out first."
Kendall watched the scene unfold, her fingers involuntarily tightening around her fork for a brief moment.
'The first time I saw Sally in prison,' she thought, 'it was obvious the way Jaxon looked at her wasn't normal. And now he's walking out with her, right in front of me. There's no way there's nothing going on between them.'
They headed back toward Windmere Estates, barely speaking the entire time. As they reached the entrance, Jaxon finally spoke up, "You didn't eat enough, did you?"
Sally quickly looked up to meet his deep gaze. "I'm full." And right on cue, her stomach let out a loud, gurgling growl that completely gave her away. She wanted to disappear on the spot, maybe just dig a hole and crawl inside.
Jaxon let out a low, husky chuckle and suddenly closed the distance between them. Instinctively, Sally shrank back until her spine pressed against the front door.
Bracing one hand against the door behind her, Jaxon looked down at her and asked, "Since you didn't want to have dinner with her, why'd you agree in the first place?"
