So it turned out Jaxon had seen right through Sally's thoughts all along. 'But Kendall's the one he actually cares about,' Sally thought, 'so how could I possibly treat her cold in front of him?'
Instead of answering him, she just brushed it off. "Mr. Zale, it's getting late. You should probably head home." She stepped to the side, slipping right out of his grasp.
Jaxon dropped his hand from the doorframe and said calmly, "Next time, if something doesn't sit right with you, just say so. You don't have to keep swallowing things down around me." Before Sally could say anything, Jaxon turned and strode down the steps.
Sally froze where she stood, staring after him with a flicker of confusion in her eyes.
'He clearly has feelings for someone else,' she thought, 'so why does he keep sleeping with me, then turn around and say stuff that makes it sound like I actually mean something to him?'
The car faded into the night, and only when it had completely vanished did she finally turn away. Little did she know, her every move had already been secretly captured on camera—and sent straight to Brad's phone.
Lillian only had three days left before summer break. Once that started, there was no way Sally could bring her to the clinic every single day. And Abigail had a full-time job, so it wasn't like she could take the kid to work either.
After spending all night thinking it over, Sally decided to look for a daycare center today. She would drop Lillian off during the day and pick her up after work. It was the best of both worlds, for now.
After visiting two daycare centers, Sally finally settled on one around noon. When she returned to the clinic, it was lunchtime. Right as Sally neared the entrance, she spotted that familiar figure sitting in the waiting area.
'Just yesterday we said goodbye at the restaurant, and today Kendall's already rushing over to see me,' Sally thought. 'She must be here to stake her claim on Jaxon.'
Standing at the front desk, Carlos pointed toward the waiting area. "Sally, there's a lady over there who says she knows you—she's been waiting for quite a while."
Sally gave a slight nod. "Okay."
The clinic happened to be free of patients at the moment—the perfect opportunity for a private conversation. 'Kendall sure knows how to pick her moment,' thought Sally.
Without so much as a glance at Kendall, Sally strode straight toward the rest area. Kendall closed in swiftly, her expression icy as she followed Sally inside.
Kendall slammed the door shut with a resounding bang, the sound echoing through every corner of the clinic.
"You might want to go easy on that door, Ms. Harper. Break it, and you'll be paying for the repairs." Sally hung her bag on the rack, her voice glacial.
"Mrs. Zale, care to explain why you had a private dinner with Jaxon?" Kendall's voice was icy as she sat on the couch, looking up to fix Sally with a cold, penetrating stare.
"Since when does grabbing a bite together need an explanation?" Sally retorted irritably. "You've got a husband. You're not with Jaxon. So why are you even this pressed?"
"Have you forgotten you're still married to Brad? Having dinner alone with Jaxon—if this gets back to Brad, what do you think he'd say?" Although Kendall's tone was calm, her words were laced with a subtle threat.
Like Sally would give a damn about that now—as if Kendall could possibly threaten her. "Go ahead and say it—see if I care," Sally said dismissively.
Kendall was fuming at Sally's response. She raised her voice. "Sally, I don't care if you want to drown in scandal yourself, but don't you dare drag Jaxon down with you.
"If you ruin his reputation because of your actions, I swear I'll make you pay for it."
"Why are you so worked up? When did I ever say there was anything special between me and Jaxon? What's with all these baseless assumptions?"
"Baseless assumptions?" Kendall sneered coldly. "Last time, you came out of his private lounge. This time, I caught you having a private dinner with him. Do you really think I'm just making baseless assumptions?"
Sally had actually been in a pretty decent mood earlier that day. But the moment Kendall showed up and stirred the pot, whatever peace she had went straight out the window.
Just then, a sharp knock came at the door. Carlos's voice came from the doorway. "Sally, there's a patient who specifically requested you. Are you free now?"
Hearing Carlos, Sally responded right away, "Okay, coming right out."
She grabbed her white coat from the rack and fixed Kendall with a cold look. "Ms. Harper, I don't have time for this pointless discussion. Please leave now—I have patients to attend to."
Kendall's expression darkened like a gathering storm when she heard the unmistakable dismissal. She lowered her voice to a dangerous whisper. "Sally, this is my final warning—stay away from Jaxon. He's going to be my husband, and I won't let you tarnish his reputation."
Without giving Sally a chance to reply, Kendall left. Sally's hand, still clutching the white coat, froze midair. She glared at Kendall's retreating figure, her mood darkening by the second.
'If Kendall knew Jaxon and I had already slept together, she'd probably tear me to pieces,' Sally thought. Kendall would end her two-year marriage for Jaxon—such was her love for that man. For some reason, Sally's heart gave a painful twinge.
That evening, Brad called Sally several times, but she didn't answer any of his calls. Worried it might be about Nick, Sally finally called him back. "What do you want?" Her voice was icy, her face completely devoid of emotion.
"Come to the Orchard Villa tonight. We need to talk." Brad's voice dropped to a dangerously deep low.
"Unless it's about Nick, don't contact me," Sally snapped.
"Get over here. No excuses." Brad's voice grew even deeper.
"Come on, Brad, don't get so worked up. It's just a few compromising photos of her and Jaxon—it's really not as big a deal as you're making it out to be." Before Sally could respond, Lena's voice suddenly cut in from the other end of the line.
Sally's hand clutching the phone froze. It was from Brad's people. Someone had snapped pictures of her and Jaxon together.
After thinking it through, she figured it must've been right after dinner yesterday, when he dropped her off and they were standing outside the door.
They hadn't exactly been all over each other, but the way Jaxon had boxed her in, one arm braced against the wall, definitely gave off some heat. Looked just cozy enough to raise a few eyebrows.
"If that's all, I'm hanging up now." Without waiting for a response, Sally decisively ended the call. She slammed her phone onto the table, her face dark with barely contained fury.
When Brad called again, Sally switched her phone to airplane mode without a moment's hesitation.
By the time Sally got home, it was already 9 PM. Lillian was already asleep, leaving Abigail alone in the living room.
Abigail looked up quickly from her phone as Sally entered. "Sally, you're finally back. The day after tomorrow, Lena's taking the hairpin to the show—has Jaxon figured out a solution yet?"
