"If Grandpa Howard were in better health, I wouldn't have to stall," Sally shot back. "If you're so capable, go talk to him yourself!"
Brad Zale's expression darkened as he glared down at her, his voice dropping to a dangerously low tone.
Sally rose swiftly from the sofa, meeting his gaze head-on. "Fine! Once Grandpa Howard's condition stabilizes completely, I'll speak to him. You won't need to intervene, just sign the papers when the time comes."
Brad lowered his brimming eyes, glaring coldly at her, veins bulging on his forehead in fury.
His hands clenched into fists at his sides.
"What? Planning to hit me again?" Sally scoffed, the corners of her lips curling up slightly in a mocking smirk.
Brad instinctively swallowed hard, momentarily silenced.
"I don't care if that man is my uncle or not." His voice rose sharply as he glared at Sally. "But until the divorce is final, don't embarrass me. If I catch you again, I won't be lenient."
Without waiting for a reply, he stormed out, slamming the door with a deafening bang.
The sharp sound echoed through the room.
Sally Zale turned—he had already pulled the front door shut from outside.
Silence crashed over the room.
Sally stared blankly at the floor, her gaze distant and unfocused.
"Did he hurt you?"
The low voice cut through Sally's thoughts.
Sally looked up to see Jaxon standing on the balcony.
He strode in, his expression grim.
Sally was taken aback.
There was probably only one way he could've come in from there.
'He climbed over?' she thought.
"Why are you here?" Instead of answering, Sally asked hesitantly, " Did you just scale the balcony railing?"
Jaxon closed the distance, cupping her face. His thumb brushed her cheek. "Does it matter how I came?"
"But with your long legs, I doubt you'd need to climb at all..."
Sally ignored his teasing, responding with a knowing smile.
"Did he touch you?" Jaxon's expression darkened, his voice grave.
Sally instinctively swallowed hard—this was the first time she'd ever seen such genuine concern on Jaxon's face.
"N-no. He didn't touch me." She gently pulled his hand away. "You don't need to worry about me like this."
Jaxon seemed to realize his actions were inappropriate and released her.
Sally moved to unlock the door.
When she turned back, Jaxon was already lounging on the couch, his posture relaxed and exuding an air of casual dominance.
"Why did you come?" she whispered, returning to his side.
"Caleb said you were coming by to check on Howard today, so I thought I'd try my luck and drop by." His arm snaked around her waist, pulling her flush against him. "Because I wanted to see you."
The sudden proximity—or his words—sent a jolt through her.
She instinctively shifted away. "Mr. Zale, this isn't appropriate, is it?"
He followed her movement, his expression turning ice-cold.
His captivating eyes darkened abruptly. "After everything we've already done, what's the point of—"
Before he could finish, Sally clapped a hand over his mouth.
Footsteps echoed outside—couldn't tell who it was, but they weren't coming this way.
It wasn't Brad coming back. Most likely, it was just the housekeeper.
In one fluid motion, Jaxon lifted her and carried her into the adjoining bathroom.
With a gentle nudge of his foot, the door swung shut behind them, leaving the two of them alone in the room.
He set her on the edge of the sink, tilting her chin up. "Tell me truthfully. Did you ever try things with him... in this room?"
Sally looked up at him, her eyes wide with shock and disbelief.
Seeing Sally remain silent, Jaxon Zale let out a low, husky chuckle. "Hmm. So you have."
"That was years ago," she deflected, looking away. "I barely remember."
"Can't remember? Or won't tell me?"
His voice was laced with danger, enveloping her like a suffocating fog, leaving her nowhere to run.
His hips pressed against the sink's edge, his hands anchoring her waist as her legs dangled.
She bit her lip, refusing to answer.
"No matter." His breath warmed her ear. "I'll overwrite those memories. One by one."
Sally's eyes widened in shock as she met the predatory gaze in Jaxon's eyes.
Before she could react, he leaned in and captured her lips in a fierce, searing kiss.
Her fingers curled into fists against the cool porcelain.
Her heart was hammering against her ribs.
Jaxon forced her lips apart, his tongue plunging deeper with possessive intensity.
At that moment, Lauren's voice suddenly called out from outside the door. "Sally, are you in there?"
Sally's blood ran cold.
Sally wondered, 'Why is Lauren here?'
She shoved against Jaxon's chest, whispering urgently, "Brad's mother is right outside."
"What's there to be scared of? Honestly, I've been itching for them to find out."
His voice dropped to a dangerously low rumble, thick with unspoken threat.
Sally swallowed hard, but Jaxon suddenly leaned in and bit down hard on her pale neck, as if deliberately trying to force a sound from her.
"Mr. Zale, please don't," Sally said urgently, pushing him away again. "Go. Now."
"She's at the door. Where exactly should I go?"
After releasing her, Jaxon braced his hands on either side of the sink, his arms caging her in so closely that the inner curve of his elbows brushed against her thighs.
Even through her skirt, his heat was overwhelming.
Sally urged, "The way you came!"
Sally's voice was tight with anxiety as she looked at him, clearly unsettled.
At a time like this, she didn't want anyone to know about the relationship between her and Jaxon. She didn't want to drag him into this mess.
"I only climbed in through the balcony earlier because things got a little urgent..."
"This is more urgent!"
Sally cut Jaxon off mid-sentence.
Jaxon chuckled, a low, resigned sound.
"Alright, I'll go." He brushed a strand of hair from her face. "Don't worry, no one will notice. And even if they do, it doesn't matter."
