Instead of hanging up, the director deliberately left the phone on the table.
The ratings for this segment kept soaring.
As chaos erupted, the host intervened, "Miss, if you claim this jade hairpin is yours, you'll need to show us some proof. Accusations can't stand without proof."
"On the back of this jade hairpin, there's a tiny 'S' engraved,"Sally said confidently. "The first letter of my name. If you doubt it, have the appraisal experts here examine it with a magnifying glass."
At her words, shock swept through the room once again.
"What 'S'? I've owned this jade hairpin for all these years. There's no 'S' on it! You're fabricating!"
Lena shot back, her voice spiked shrilly.
Sally's gaze remained locked on Lena's face, watching as her expression darkened to the extreme.
She also raised her voice considerably. "Experts, please verify!"
The host, seeing the chaos spiraling out of control, had no choice but to call the appraisal experts up to the stage.
The two appraisal experts carefully examined the jade hairpin from every angle.
One of the appraisal experts announced, "Indeed, there is an 'S' engraved here. It's so finely engraved that it's invisible to the naked eye, only discernible under a magnifying glass."
The appraiser's words sent the studio into an uproar.
Someone in the audience gasped, "No way! Did she actually steal it?"
"No way she stole it. She must've gotten it through some other means."
"Even if she got it through other means, it must've been some shady dealings. Disgusting!"
The crowd erupted, shouting, "Get her out of the show! Get out now!"
The live audience erupted in furious protest, demanding that Lena be kicked off the show immediately.
Lena's face paled then darkened in quick succession.
Her eyes darted to the camera.
Through the computer screen, Sally's gaze happened to meet Lena's—as if, for a split second, the two were staring each other down across the digital void.
The seething hatred in Lena's eyes instantly registered with Sally.
Lena already figured out that Sally was behind this.
Just then, the phone started crackling with intermittent static.
Looks like we're under cyber attack.
Sally seized the last moment before the call ended and said firmly, "Miss Yasmin, please return it promptly. Someone awaits you backstage."
Abigail frantically gestured: Hang up! Her face tight with anxiety.
It looked like her phone had been hacked.
Sure enough, the moment she set the phone down—before she could even hang up—the screen died.
"It's been hacked..."
Abigail whispered, staring at the phone.
Sally barely glanced at her phone before turning her attention back to the computer.
The scene was already in chaos, and Lena was quickly escorted offstage by the staff.
The host announced a temporary suspension of the show.
Beside her, Abigail quickly pulled up the trending news on her phone.
[Lena accused of acquiring the jade hairpin through shady means.]
The buzz was growing hotter by the minute.
"Look at this," Abigail said, showing Sally her phone screen. "It's been less than ten minutes and it's already trending. Unless some bigger scandal breaks out, she's in real trouble this time."
A cold smile curled at Sally's lips. "She brought this upon herself."
A cry came from beside them. "The computer got hacked too!"
Abigail's friend swiftly launched a counterattack, but was quickly outpaced by the hacker.
The whole screen was swarming with Trojans.
Abigail quickly stood up and walked over to her friend. She said calmly, "It's okay. We'll get you a new laptop later."
"Come on, we're allies—no need for that."
Her friend gave a gentle smile, her expression soft with warmth.
Sally quickly rose from her chair and grabbed her phone. "I'll get you a new one."
Without waiting for a response, she strode to the balcony, texting Jaxon from her burner line.
[I'm done on my end. Have you sent someone to pick up the jade hairpin?]
Ding-
Before long, her phone buzzed with a text notification.
She grabbed her phone—two new messages from Jaxon.
[I've sent someone.]
[Miss Hazel, who exactly are you?]
Sally's hands trembled while holding the phone.
'He suspects? How?' Sally thought, her heart skipping a beat.
'Logically speaking, there's no way he could have traced the origin of this jade hairpin so quickly.'
'How did he even start suspecting me?'
Before Sally could reply, another message from Jaxon popped up.
[I watched the entire livestream. Miss Hazel, your speech patterns are similar to someone I know. And both your names have 'S'. Do you know Sally Zale?]
Sally's heart jumped into her throat.
She never would have thought Jaxon would actually suspect her.
But right now, she had no intention of revealing any more than she had to.
Steeling herself, she quickly texted back.
Ding-
On his desk, Jaxon's phone buzzed with a notification.
His fingers, which had been absently tapping on the desk, stilled.
The next second, he swiftly grabbed his phone, unlocked the screen, and Hazel's message instantly popped up.
[Likely coincidence. I don't know her.]
Jaxon's expression instantly darkened as he read the message.
"Sir, are you suspecting Hazel is Ms. Sally?"
Caleb asked, curiosity and confusion written all over his face.
"It's just a hunch. Since first contact, she's hidden her voice. To this day, I've never heard it."
"I really hadn't noticed before." Caleb's eyes widened. "That Miss Hazel did sound like she was using a voice changer. Not her real voice."
Jaxon's gaze turned glacial, but he didn't say another word.
"But if Hazel really is Ms. Sally," Caleb said thoughtfully, "why would she deliberately conceal her expertise? From what I know of Hazel, she has a stellar reputation in the industry—not only is she a great person, but her professional skills are truly top-notch."
"Ms. Sally Zale is already outstanding in medicine. If she's also skilled at jade craftsmanship, that's truly remarkable."
Jaxon's face darkened slightly as he leveled a cold, indifferent stare at Caleb.
After a few minutes of contemplation, he finally spoke. "If I recall correctly, didn't she just imply that Lena acquired her jade hairpin through underhanded means?"
