"Yes!" Caleb answered promptly. "That's exactly what she said."
Jaxon looked up at Caleb and ordered, "Look into how Lena got that set of crystal hairpins."
"Understood, Mr. Zale. I'll look into it right away."
"Okay." Jaxon leaned back against the seat and said no more.
Caleb closed the door behind him and left.
The room fell into a dead silence, broken only by the rhythmic tapping of Jaxon's fingers against the desk.
His gaze remained fixed on the phone screen, constantly checking Sally and Hazel's phone numbers, but no matter how hard he tried, nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
'Could Hazel actually be Sally?' He asked himself.
The autumn wind howled outside the window.
The evening chill, carried on the cold wind, swept into the mansion's hall.
Lena rushed in, looking travel-worn, her gaze settling on the kid in the living room. "Nick, where's your dad?" she puffed.
"Lena!" As soon as Nick saw her, he dashed over excitedly and pointed toward the second floor. "Dad's in his study upstairs. What's so urgent?"
Lena made no response, her face grave as she headed upstairs.
Nick hesitated, wondering what the matter was, and then hurried after her upstairs.
Reaching the study door on the second floor, Lena entered, leaving the door open behind her. Nick followed closely and took a seat on the couch.
At the sound, Brad quickly looked up, surprise flickering in his eyes as he glanced at her. "Lena? What brings you here so suddenly?"
"Brad, haven't you seen the news?" She snapped, producing the news on her phone on his desk, her voice urgent. "How could no one tell you about something this big?"
Brad frowned as his gaze dropped to the desk.
His eyes quickly scanned the news as he snatched up her phone.
After a quick glance, he said coolly, "I've been under the weather today, so I stayed home reading instead of going to headquarters. How could something like this happen? Who exposed you?"
Lena snapped, "Who else? It's Sally!"
Surprise flickered in Brad's eyes.
Years ago, when he brought the crystal hairpins to the antique shop as its prized exhibit, Lena immediately took a liking to them, so he gave them to her. Later, unable to come up with a plausible excuse, he told Sally the hairpins had been stolen.
But he had never told Lena that the crystal hairpins were Sally's.
"Lena," he looked straight into her eyes, "how did you know the crystal hairpins belonged to Sally?"
Lena instinctively swallowed, nervousness written across her face.
After a moment's hesitation, she muttered with uncertainty. "Actually, I once saw Sally wearing that set of crystal hairpins, and I really liked it back then. When I found it in your collection and said I liked it, I never thought you'd actually give it to me..."
Brad nodded thoughtfully at it.
"Brad, Sally has made such a huge scene out of this. She's deliberately targeting me, isn't she?"
A shadow of frustration flickered across her face.
Brad's expression grew darker as he caught her look.
After a brief pause, he said coolly, "You should head home for now. I'll take care of this and make sure you get an answer soon."
"Alright then."
Lena nodded briefly and hurried toward the doorway.
Nick hurried over to his father. "Dad, does Mom really care about that set of crystal hairpins that much? You already gave it to Lena. Is Mom getting it back now?"
Brad glanced at his son, his voice much gentler. "Perhaps. After all, that is your mother's."
"But Lena loves it..." Nick frowned, obviously upset. "Once you give something away, there's no way you can just take it back, right?"
Brad replied, "You know how your mom is—she's always got to make a big deal out of everything. It's not like this is the first time you've seen her act this way."
His voice was laced with displeasure as his expression grew even colder.
Nick pouted, sticking out his lower lip, but said nothing more.
As evening fell, Abigail returned with the set of crystal hairpins and carefully it them in Sally's hands.
"At last, it's back where it belongs," she said, putting on a soft, contented smile.
Sally extended both hands and carefully took over the set of crystal hairpins.
She cradled it carefully in her palms, as if holding a priceless treasure, for in truth, it was exactly an exceptionally rare and invaluable heirloom.
"See? I told you—what's meant to be yours will always find its way back to you. And if it isn't, no matter how hard you try, you just can't force it," Abigail concluded with satisfaction.
Sally nodded. "That's true."
Just then, Lillian's voice rang out from the doorway, "Jaxon! You're here!"
At these words, Sally's heart leaped to her throat.
Lillian was playing hopscotch by the entrance, the front door wide open, making it impossible to miss the approaching figure from outside.
Jaxon's voice rang through the hall, "So, Lillian, have you been a good girl lately?"
He took Lillian's hand and led her inside.
Sally instinctively tucked the crystal hairpins into her pocket.
Abigail was frantic with worry.
Seeing Sally tuck away the crystal hairpins, she was relieved.
"Jaxon, I've been such a good girl lately! I've been eating my three meals on time and never missed my classes!" Lillian looked up at Jaxon gaily. "Teacher even said I'm super smart!"
"That's amazing!" Jaxon's smile widened. "What would you like as a reward, Lillian? Just name it and I will get it for you."
Lillian grinned and exclaimed, "Well, let me think extra carefully about this!"
"Mr. Zale."
Abigail greeted Jaxon with a nod and stepped forward.
"Ms. Nell."
Jaxon nodded slightly at her, then fixed his gaze on Sally's face.
Abigail immediately got the hint. She stepped forward and gently took Lillian by the hand, saying, "It's getting late. I'll take Lillian upstairs for her bath. You two go ahead and talk."
"Thanks."
Jaxon quietly acknowledged, his voice dropping a notch.
As Abigail took Lillian upstairs, Sally poured Jaxon a glass of water and handed it to him.
Jaxon had been sitting across from her, but all of a sudden, he got up and moved to sit right beside her.
Sally looked at him with a bit of surprise. "Mr. Zale, what brings you here so suddenly?"
"There's something I want to ask you." Jaxon lifted his gaze, regarding her calmly. "I wonder if you know a certain person."
Hearing it, Sally's hand, which was holding the pitcher, gave a slight tremble.
A sudden sense of foreboding gripped her.
Jaxon looked up at Caleb and ordered, "Look into how Lena got that set of crystal hairpins."
"Understood, Mr. Zale. I'll look into it right away."
