Sally smiled nonchalantly as she replied to him in a deliberate voice. "That set of hairpins was mine to begin with. Taking back what's rightfully mine is only natural, don't you think?"
Brad's face darkened to the extreme, a dangerous crimson glint flickering in his eyes.
For a moment, he realized he was not on the moral high ground.
After all, the hairpin had been given to Lena through underhanded means in the first place.
But the resentment churned in his chest like a bitter pill he just couldn't swallow.
"It's just a damn crystal hairpin! What's the big deal? If you want, I'll pay you for it! Did you really have to humiliate Lena in front of everyone?" He reprimanded her with raised voice. "Are you trying to destroy her career?"
"Just a 'damn crystal hairpin'?" Sally retorted with biting sarcasm, her sneer twisted into an even more derisive curve. "Then why did you insist on borrowing it as the flagship piece of your store back then?"
Brad was left speechless again.
He huffed, "Is that set of damn crystal hairpins really that important to you?"
Sally shot back with an unwavering voice, "Yes! It's not just important—it means the world to me. That's why I'll stop at nothing to get it back where it belongs!"
Brad little cared about that. He cared only about his own dignity. "I already gave it away! After all this trouble you've caused, how am I supposed to save face?"
"Give it away?" Sally gave him a cold, indifferent look. "Didn't you tell me it was stolen? So you gave it to your precious Lena after all?"
Looking at her indifferent expression, Brad muttered, "So you knew all along that I gave it to her. Is that why you resorted to such underhanded tactics to retrieve it?"
"How else was I supposed to get it back?" Sally snapped with infuriation.
Brad didn't know how to answer it.
Sally saw right through his guilty conscience and made it clear bluntly, "All these years we've been married, you've never truly known me. You always saved everything good for Lena. Did I ever even exist in your eyes?"
"You've had everything just by staying with me all these years. What the hell else do you want?"
Brad asked, his brow furrowed, his expression radiating irritation. He had always abused her kindness and taken her dedication for granted.
Sally sneered, "Then tell me, Brad—after all these years of marriage, what have I ever gotten out of it?"
Brad stared back at her. For a moment, Sally couldn't tell if his expression was sheer arrogance or indifference.
She raised her voice, "All these years I've been married to you, not only did I never get what I wanted, but I endured nothing but contempt from you and our son. In the end, you even threw me into prison! Tell me, Brad, what did I ever get out of this marriage?
"All I got were scars and a broken heart. Nothing else—absolutely nothing.
"You never really knew me at all, did you?" She smiled mockingly. "I bet you didn't even realize that the set of crystal hairpins was my dowry."
As her words landed, Brad stared at her in disbelief. "What did you just say? That was your dowry?"
All he knew was that Sally had brought the crystal hairpin before their marriage, but it never occurred to him that it was actually her dowry.
"Of course," Sally said bitterly, "with all your attention on your precious Lena, Brad, how would you ever know this was my dowry?"
Without another word, she turned on her heel and strode toward the door.
She had no intention of continuing this futile argument.
"I didn't know that was your dowry," Brad began, his voice faltering. "If I had known..."
Sally cut him off sharply, "If you'd known, you wouldn't have given it away?"
She whipped around and shot a piercing look at him.
Brad remained silent, his gaze fixed on her as words seemed to die in his throat.
Sally let out a hoarse, humorless chuckle.
"Knowing you, Mr. Zale—even if you knew it was my dowry, as long as Lena fancied it, you'd probably hand it over. Hell, you'd even give her our wedding band, wouldn't you?"
Brad stammered but couldn't refute.
"Mr. Zale, I don't have time for this. Kindly leave now—you're keeping me from seeing my patients."
Sally pointed sharply toward the door, her tone making it clear he was being dismissed.
Brad clenched his jaw so hard it ached, but in the end, he stormed out without another word.
Sally stood alone in the lounge, taking deep breaths until her turbulent emotions gradually subsided.
The clinic was packed with patients today, keeping her running around nonstop.
As evening approached, Abigail picked up Lillian and went straight to the clinic with Jaxon's Madonna Locket.
"I was going to give this to you at home, but since it seemed too valuable, I thought it best to bring it straight to your clinic."
In the lounge, Abigail explained as Sally opened the locket case.
The Madonna Locket had a clean crack right down the center, most likely from being dropped.
There was a missing fragment. To fully restore it, another piece of crystal was needed.
The crystal was of premium quality—just like her hairpin.
Such top-grade material was practically impossible to find on the market these days.
Suddenly, Sally had an idea.
Finn might have some crystals of the same quality.
Abigail leaned in for a closer look, curious. "How bad is it? Tough to fix?"
"It's quite tricky, but there's still a way," Sally said. "I might need to leave Westmere for a bit—this kind of crystal is hard to find, so I'll have to get a piece from Finn."
"Wait, isn't Finn in Freymoor? That's a couple hundred miles from Westmere. Why not just have him mail the crystal to you?"
Abigail shot her a puzzled look.
"No way. Such top-grade crystal is extremely rare. If anything goes wrong along the way, it would be a huge loss."
Sally's expression became solemn.
Hearing their conversation, Carlos poked his head in. "Sal, are you heading out of town?"
His eyes were immediately drawn with curiosity to what she was holding in her palm.
It was a shattered Madonna Locket—clearly a high-end piece.
Sally snapped the case shut the moment she saw Carlos.
Abigail complained, "Do you have to be everywhere?"
She stepped in front of Sally, shielding her as she shot a displeased glare at Carlos.
Carlos's brow furrowed as he teased, "Abigail, you are allowed to meddle with everything. What makes you special, huh?"
Abigail frowned and shot back, "What nonsense are you talking about? How am I any special?"
Carlos teased, "You're especially nosy."
A faint, knowing smile played at the corners of his lips.
Abigail rolled her eyes at him. "This is nonsense. Not only are you nosy, but you're also ridiculously gossipy—always peeking at everything. What if Sally's changing in the lounge?"
Carlos quickly cut her off, "Hey! I don't have that kind of habit! Don't go spreading rumors about me!"
"Alright," Sally stopped them seriously. "Carlos, I need to be away tomorrow and won't be back for two days. Can you hold down the fort at the clinic by yourself?"
"Of course!" Carlos put on an exaggeratedly serious face. "A real man would fain take responsibility."
Abigail huffed, "Oh, please! At best, you're just a decent-looking brat—what kind of man is that?" Then, with a haughty sniff, she added, "Now, someone like Jaxon—that's a real man through and through."
